/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - TRICKERS STOW EDITION
What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bick4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them
How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush
>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

Really atrocious taste. This is what "boots as a fashion accessory" looks like when you're gay, have money and are extremely generic to a fault. The only interesting thing about this collection is the fact that there are 4 (four) pairs of ottowa boots and ZERO (Zed) cap toes.

>Find them to be high-quality but completely underwhelming.. welt and sole feel chunky, shaft never conforms as well as patterns with dedicated backstays, spoiled by the US boots' padded collar, hook style laces just way more of a hassle than speed laces.

I have two pairs of Whites MPs in different leathers and I basically only ever wear one of them
I'm probably gonna sell the other pair but they have manufacturer's defects which didn't bother me but will probably affect how much someone else would be willing to buy them for
>>
>>18654823
It depends on which maker you get. Steinadler is shit, Steinkogler is noticeably better.
However, they suffer from two fatal flaws:
>the shaft is oversized for pants tucking so you'll never get a snug fit around your shins if you're wearing them civilian style or with blousers and/or you have skinny legs
>the heel counter is nonexistent, too straight/not shaped for gripping the heel, causes unnecessary risk of slippage
Everything else (including lack of padding or lining, chunky sole and welt etc.) is a positive imo.
>>
>>18654889
that's simply not true because they're not the exact same
there's going to be variations in the sole and leather plus the different colors work for different outfits. he should have diversified a bit but ten grant stone pairs wouldn't be strange
>>
>>
>>18654973
propose an outfit where you'd choose a honey glazed shell cordovan NST over a honey glazed shell cordovan plain toe or a natural minerva NST over a natural chromexcel NST and they wouldn't just be interchangable

Yeah I gotta trim my collection back. Im at about 20 boots, but more than a quarter are engineer boots and of those, 5 are black
>Black cxl horsehide Mr Lou
>Black cxl horsehide Boss Round Toe
>Attractions 269
>Black work leather Wesco Morrison
>Black cxl John lofgren Wabash boots
Of those only the Morrisons are struck through. The black Lous get the most wear. The Lofgrens were a steal so I kinda wanna keep them as beaters, and the Attractions are the most attractive last. So itll probably be the Boss boots I flip.

I don't understand any of this jargon. Whole cut is bad? Or bad when it's cheap? How many seams do they have and what's an ideal number of seams?
>>
>>
>>18655445
wholecut means single seam means one continuous piece of leather which is very good
cheap usually means utilizing most of the hide
waxed flesh's blemishes do not appear as much as it would on a smooth leather
so if you're going cheap (meermin) best to go with waxed flesh because it less risk than a smooth leather

And his wife works, she's also an "influencer" in the women's space of things. So I'm sure the extra cash is plenty to get new boots all the time

Two incomes is a pretty good gig. My wife also works and together we make plenty to have enough left over. I buy a new pair of footwear or clothing all the time. In the past couple months I've gotten 3 new pairs of shoes and a leather jacket
Anyway, apparently his students tried following him and adding him on socials which is a huge no-no for teachers. There's strict rules about how students and teachers are allowed to interact outside of work and having your students following all your accounts is not good. To be better safe than sorry he took everything down

I don't really baby the upper leather on my roughout boots, but the welt is still naked leather. Does it make sense to quickly apply colorless polish every few days to the sides of the sole? When I come back from outside I get pure white salt residue inside and on the sides of the welt.

No, just an anon who likes boots too much. Im thinking Ill probably sell off the Boss round toes (I have enough black teacore and prefer the MP toe to the boss toe), my olive petrolio horsehide Mr Lous (not super keen on the green they patina into and concerned about rebuildability with a meme leather), and a pair of Nicks Roberts in brown cxl (not a fan of the classic heel stack).
Lately all Ive been wearing are my black CXL horsehide Lous and my black Whites Farmer/Ranchers, so I dont need any of the rest realistically, but I also know Ill get the urge to cop some of my collection back if I sell them off.

Why does every single brand have to have its own arbitrary interpretation of whatever the local sizing system is? "Size charts" are completely meaningless and always do more harm than good without a column for real measured foot length.
>I'm a 9EE on the Goyson last
>Noooo this brand runs large you need a 7¾, it's the Shartman last!!
>I'm a 43 Italian but this brand runs small do I take an Alsatian 45 or a Portuguese 46?! Help!
You are all fucking deranged.
Kill all cobblers that don't give real size info.
>>
>>18656235
the truth is nobody agrees on shoe sizing and everyone likes their shoes to fit diferent so you basically just go on vibes
wasn't a problem in the past because you bought shoes in person
so yes it is unhinged
>>
>>18656235
You're a fucking retard aren't you?
There is no standard shoe size. Different countries do it their own way. But it's actually very standardized in that regard. You just need to know your size in US/UK/EU and JP and you pretty much know them all
>>
>>
>>
>>18656250
>You just need to know your size in US/UK/EU and JP and you pretty much know them all
Demonstrably false.
I'm a 44 in one model of Italian boots and a 45 in another model from the same brand, and a 43 in boots from the dudes directly next door that use the same workshop. These niggers can't even be consistent within their own lines. This would not be a problem if they just added a 'recommended foot length' column.
>>18656254
It has nothing to do with establishing a single standard across lasts. Just say what real foot length corresponds to what size in the given shoe (or omit the traditional sizing entirely and only work with Mondopoint on a per-shoe basis). It's that simple.
>>
>>
>>
>>18656277
That's exactly what I'm saying you braindead faggot. Because sizing is different, brands NEED to provide the recommended foot length in their charts. "UK US EU" is completely useless if their 10 fits like an 11 and the one pair of EU45s you have fit like a 12. I'm not asking for a standardized sizing system, I'm asking for recommended foot lengths to be given on a per-brand, per-last or per-shoe basis, which is the opposite of standardization.

Just copped these Ariats for work. I've got several pairs of real traditionally-made Western boots but they're lethal on snow and ice, and I work with manual machine tools so anything with laces sucks since they'll get full of razor-sharp metal chips. These seemed like a decent compromise since they've got pretty aggressive tread.

>What's wrong with Solovairs?
Basically, they use either cheap leathers or pleathers (plastics).
Creases are normal for most leathers (horse butt has "bubbling"), but cracking isn't, unless the leather is completely dried up.
In picrel, the leather is cracking despite having a glossy/oily look.
The soles have durability issues, but that is to be expected because it's designed to be soft and light. They also can't be re-soled.
>buy instead
Since there are only two boot makers that make this style, Solovairs are generally considered the better option to doc martens.
So yeah, maybe try a different style?

>they’re one size bigger than my normal shoes.
What do you mean by that?
Boots and shoes typically run a size larger than sneakers in the same size. Say you have size 10 sneakers, a boot in 10 will usually be too big and a 9 would fit better.

personally i used tokonole for the edges and burnished it, very easy to apply and the results are good
you can also use regular beeswax and more elbow grease
it doesn't need reapplying every few days, maybe once every year tops
the problem with wax polish is that you're not depositing it very deep into the leather since it's designed to build a layer on top, also it contains a lot of solvents, so overapplying will just lead to delamination with time

Bought these Trickers stow boots for £275. They're tight on the right foot at the instep. I'm usually an H/EEE fit.
Anons, convince me to return these. I don't want to make a retarded cattle decision and keep something that won't ever "break in" and be comfortable.

Depends on how tight. If they’re fine on one foot but tight on the other then they’ll probably break in? Unless one of your feet is an abomination compared to the other.
>>18659861
They’re pull loops. You wouldn’t get it

I will never understand the appeal of engineer boots.
For one, they look like the rain boots my mother bought when I was a child.
Two, these soak up so much sweat, then becomes full of bacteria.
Three, stylistically, there's no versatility. They're only work appropriate if you have a blue collar job, wearing them casually makes you look like a pretentious douche. Like those hipsters who cosplay as a lumberjack

Molfy boots anon here. The damage. I wear these boots very sparingly, can't really remmember the last time I put them on. Clean with saddle soap first and then vinegar and water mixture or the other way around?

Done. Stains disappeared, it seems. Will let them airdry for 24h in a ventilated place and see how it goes.

The placement of the stains it's a bit weird regarding how they've been stored. But on the other hand tgey kinda smell like mold or humidity. Weird that it doesn't happen in my other boots.
So yeah, perhaps it's not mold but I'm still not 100% sure.

Want to get outdoors more this year once we stop getting fucking snowed on. Any recs for hiking boots? Danners? Jim Greens? Something else? Not a pro hiker by any means so I don't need some super boot for climbing Everest, just something well made with good traction in wet, dry, sandy, muddy environments.
US, less than 400 dollars but can stretch it if I think it's worth.

I'm gonna be honest anon the reason I don't already have a pair of hiking boots is I find them hideous. I refuse to wear shoes/boots I don't like the look of.

I know, I'm really picky about footwear. I personally think boots can be functional while still being fashionable.

Can't remmember, but there's a chance that happened.
Anyway, mixed water with white vinegar 50/50, and applied it to the boots, inside and outside with a damp rag. Here's how they look after 24h of air drying. Shall I clean them further with saddle soap or just give them a light conditioning?

The old surplus parameme stocks were best. I have a pair of the new production ones KS did and they fit like shit compared to my surplus pair (which needed lots of conditioning, and a new sole to be really wearable.) My US combat boots, jungle boots or otherwise all fit better, the paramemes toebox feels way more narrow even in a larger size and normal width.

Here they are after conditioning, letting them sit overnight and vigorous brushing this morning. They still smell a bit of humidity on the inside, shoukd I be worried? Anything I can do about it?

A pair of Nick's Robert boots with roughout lowers. Pulled them out of the closet recently after they've been in there a couple years. Cleaned and oiled and good to go for spring/summer.

Go to the stockyards and browse around. The Cavender’s there will have a good selection of entry/med tier boots and if you’re really feeling like getting some nice boots, go to Lucchese or ML Leddy.
I’m not a fan in particular of Ariat or Justin, but if you’re just looking for a cheap larp boot for the fair and rodeo, that’ll get you by.
