>think I'm pretty fit
>can deadlift 3x bodyweight, can run a 12 minute 2 mile
>try to swim 100 meters without stopping
>feel like I'm going to fucking die
>gasping for air each time I come up, can go about 3 strokes under the water before having to surface again
>random old lady in the lane next to me absolutely fucking smokes me at the same distance and keeps going as I cling to the edge of the pool trying to catch my breath
How do you actually get better at swimming and holding your breath? Is this one of those things I should have been doing since middle school if I wanted to be good at it?
General swimming thread I guess

slow down. make sure you're pointing your toes out directly behind you and kicking from the hips. like the other anon said, rotate on a horizontal axis. you could try use those float things for your knees and focus only only arms or use a kickboard and only focus on kicking. breathing is all about a smooth rhythm left right left breath right side, right left right breath left side. like anything our bodies are lazy as fuck and will eventually find the easiest possible way of doing something. stick at it and you'll be able to continuously swim in no time.

you could also try some pyramid type training 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 150, 100, 50, 25 (or similar) with a 10 or 20 second break in between sets. some ex-swimfag anons advised that in the last swim thread. usually i'd just bang out 2.5km or more straight because I love it, but I the swimfag pyramid anons method is actually pretty good and I am enjoying it.

lastly with swimming you just have to accept the moggings. old cunts, fat cunts, manlets, lanklets, doesn't matter. there will always be some onewho will absolutely mog you. every saturday morning when I swim the highschool swim club is there. every saturday morning I get obliterated by 14 year old boys and girls that aren't even trying.

There's likely some movement or positioning error you have that produces huge drag. Maybe you're not gliding enough. Also the CO2 in your lung builds up if you don't breathe properly, and that exhausts extremely fast.

started swimming a month ago, making some real progress. I can now swim with four strokes per breath consistently, and can swim with 6 strokes per breath for over 50m.
I started struggling with 50m at a time, yesterday i swam 1.5km in 150m sets.
i have really improved my technique, I'm much smoother now, focussing on technique, breathing, and ignoring the time has made me faster.

Separate from the rotating that guy said, if you are moving at a decent speed the wake of your head should create a little pocket of air at mouth level

slow down, work on your cardiovascular fitness, don't get psyched out when you swim and start panicking and raise your heart rate. Also watch some videos and work on that form and technique to minimize drag like other posts mention

This. It's called getting "feel" for the water. If you take time off after gaining this sensation, it will go away and you'll be back to feeling like your body is fighting the water, not moving through it efficiently and with power.

Dear swimchads, why does my right lat activate all the way down but not my left when I’m doing crawl? I can’t really activate it all the way down even when I’m out of the water. Any advice? Many thanks in advance.

You simply aren't conditioned for swimming. You:
1. Don't have the neurological connections to swim efficiently
2. Your body position is probably fucked up because of your weight distribution
3. Your lung capacity is low
4. Most importantly your lactate threshold for the muscles involved is very low
The only way to get better is lots and lots of swimming hard. Look up swimming workouts. Intervals are the best way to increase lactate threshold.

You're either dropping your elbow right after the catch or you're doing a wavy stroke through the water. Rotate into the catch so that your shoulder is near your chin and pull straight back with your forearm.

Smelling sweat or shit is actually having sweat particles in your nose. At least in the water it gets washed away outright

fat old ladies buoyancy maxxed. they only need to deal with moving forward

include separate breathing drills in your training. when doing so refocus on doing good form rather than finishing the lane. just do a couple of strokes and then start again

I decided to learn how to swim last summer and it took me about 4 months of just trying different things out in a lake till i was really conferrable and could maintain a 1km front crawl without stopping.
once you get your breathing down, a kick that doesn't waste all your energy and a good pull that doesn't fuck up your shoulders you can go forever.

i have gotten up to 200m freestyle without stopping, how far do i take it?
150m Breast stroke
200m Freestyle
200m Freestyle
150m Breast stroke
150m Freestyle
150m Freestyle
150m Breast stroke
150m Freestyle
150m Freestyle
50m Breast Stroke
50m freestyle 6 strokes per breath
50m freestyle 6 strokes per breath
might do 100 x2 breast stroke in between each freestyle instead of 150m every two

I went swimming today at the local pool for the first time in 30ish years. How am I supposed to deal with the female highschool swim team showing up to practice because the school is too poor to afford a pool?

One breath every three strokes at a steady state isn’t half bad
just keep at it

Yeah just take it slow, try to set a goal like getting to 500m in under an hour your first week. Then 1km in the same time frame and so on. When you start to get 2km an hour I would recommend you start buying equipment and the like since swimming will probably be too easy for you at that point without it. But that is still ways off so my best advice is just consistently start going 3 days minimum a week and keep at it. Also technique does matter a lot so I would recommend maybe booking 2 weeks worth of classes to get the fundamentals right.
