Advice for new runners:
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week);
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months;
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest;
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural; and
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans).

Hello /roon/
I'm a fat bulky MF (6ft - 260lbs) but I have excellent cardio due to running every other day a few km with my dogs (pic rel).
However as soon as I try to increase mileage and/or speed, my right hip starts to hurt and I have discomfort in it for a few days. Any tips beside the obvious (lose weight?) but it's puzzling it's only the right hip and not the left one.

how much of an increase?

My regular run is a 4km loop that is 70% road and 30% wooded trail. I do it between 25-28mins (depends also on how much the dogs wants to pause to sniff and piss), but as soon as I try to push myself to ensure I do it in less than 25 mins, pain.

What are YOU listening to on your roons anon???? I recently started the Dresden Files series and its about this wizard detective guy who goes on to solve pretty wacky / gruesome cases. Im on the first book and im enjoying it very much so far. I imagine everything in black and white like those old noir detective stories where it constantly rains outside. Very comfy.

God bless your tracking autism, but to what end is all this data keeping when it has taken four years to get a sub 30 5k. You need to put some tempo runs or hill runs or SOMETHING in rather than plinking along at a 9:00 pace for days
>>
>>77199247
Thank you, I don't really have a reason other than I like making spreadsheets
I'm coming back from an injury (not really healed, it still hurts), but I'll do some tempo runs when I can. I was a lot faster over the summer when I did a HM. I don't do intervals because that (and the cold) is what gets me injured. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of good hills around here, they all involve running very close to traffic. There are good flat trails though.
>>
>>
I am thinking of a 30 day challenge. I don't run because every time i try to do running, after a few weeks i just can't recover from pushing myself too hard.
5km a day, staying in zone 2, 30 days.
should i run 5k as fast as i can before and after this? or just stick to zone 2 because it's all i intend to do?

My feet and achilles are always fucking killing me at the end of my long runs. Did a 13 miler today and still feel like I have plenty of energy but my footstrike really starts getting affected by the end of it. Is it just how it is?
>>
>>77199492
Seems like a bad idea especially if it's every day. I takes like 6 months to really get acclimated to a point where you can run every day without moving towards an injury. Just stick with 3 days a week until you're really set with that.

The intensity doesn't really matter. Most of the times I've been injured over the years aren't from the hard stuff it is from volume increases or frequency increases. With how abrupt and quick performance falloff follows an injury it's just better to play it safer the more injury prone you are.

Training is long and you will build up your conditioning. most plans max around 18-22 so you probably won’t end up like. >>77200531
But yeah, marathons are tough. There’s definitely more of a mental side to it as well. I’ve read somewhere that with this new “running boom” places are starting to see half’s fill up like the major marathons. A lot of people have done their marathons and don’t want to do spend several months doing a train block and a week recovery. Training is shorter and they are cheaper, so you can do a few per year.

I think my progress is good since I only started running in November and I'm confident I could probably do a half-marathon since there will be water and snacks. I may start carrying gels with me because I was fucking gassed at like mile 7 and I don't ever plan to do longer stuff, both with cycling and running I go out, feel good and once I get a number ion my head I do it. I also should probably start tracking my calories again because I hate eating and everything involved in the process so I know I'm never getting enough but that's a future me problem.

Wrapped up winter training with today’s marathon. 3:45 on the dot, approx 7 minutes slower than Fall’s PR. Very melancholic at the whole thing. Traveled and put down a decent amount of money for this race which I was hoping would be a neat experience, but ultimately was pretty lonely as I was battling horrific jetlag and realized I couldn’t actually get out and do anything or eat anything special beforehand. Think I’m going to just do the local race come fall and see if I can crack 3:15

Not really. I purposefully slowed down around the midway point, and I had two brief moments of walking around mile 23 where I needed to catch my breath, but I never “walled” to the point that I was having to repeatedly cycle between walking and jogging

tourist here, been rooning for almost a year now,
I can do 10k with one short break in the middle and being really comfortable with 0 pain
>Question
why bother doing more than 10k?
any realistic health benefits?
10k at medium speed, I am panting, and in some areas I go max and there are some uphills also,
I don't want to fuck my legs and feet, like when I first started running?
nothing I've seen say you get any benefits for long distance running,
more like I've seen the opposite, like you are damaging your body and wear out your cartilage etc
>>
>>77203075
>almost a year
>I can jog two 5ks
>I am panting
>I fuck my legs and feet
>nothing I've seen
Maybe instead of watching youtube videos, apply yourself and become enlightened. No cares if you choose not to run further. But if you want to argue the things that you've seen, be sure you've done them first.
>>

>>77203122
10k with a 2 minute stop to drink water and cool down a bit.
I am 70kg lean, strong legs as I come from cycling.
no pain now, no sore legs, no nothing,
yes I pant because of the uphills and I do go max in a few sections just for the sake of it.
why do you people run for long long distances.
>>77203135
I get it, it is fun.
but injury does come in eventually, everyone has a limit,
david goggins blew his knees,
and all long marathoners don't have knees or feet anymore, 50yo and all in pain
so why fuck bother running past a ""perfectly good cardio""
that's my thoughts anyways
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>77203075
I wouldn't bother doing more than 10k if running wasn't my main priority and I wasn't training for a race. Just to stay fit and get some cardio in 10k is more than enough.
But to actually improve and reach your potential in distances 5k and up you would need to be running more.
>>
>>
>>
>>77203147
acting as though no one here has been to a race or run club and witnessed ancient boomers still running pain free. Goggins knees were fucked before he even started running ultras and thats a midwit argument since his whole brand was overtraining despite pain, which is the opposite advice widely given.
>>
>>77203136
Yes moved to sprinting due to beta blockers making distance running unpleasant (limits HR so can't go fast for long). Training is different and you need flat ground, grass or a track to go really quick safely.
>>77203225
Distance groups at my club will do flat out work occasionally during summer. These are athletes that will do 800-5k and steeplechase in summer, road 5-10k and cross country other times. IME, can cause DOMS in hamstrings and core (can't lift your legs) if you do it too quickly after serious mileage.
>>
>>77203438
Boomer here (gen X ackchewerly). Genetics and past history play a role. Some people are going to have cartilage problems however careful they are. Others just won't whatever training they do.
Playing other sports with a risk of twisting when younger (football, rugby) can set up some issues which running exposes later in life. Older sprinters are not immune to this as impact forces are much higher even if number of cycles is way lower.
If you are careful and listen to your body - don't run when injured, wear appropriate footwear and add some strength training, conditioning and flexibility, you can keep running and not wreck your knees.
>>
>>
>>
>>77203553
Not really necessary but it’s a big part of building up your aerobic base.
Essentially, zone 2 works your muscles by using oxygen to create energy. The more you do, the more efficient your body gets taking in oxygen and moving blood to your legs.
Sprints/tempo/hills/speed training is to build up your anaerobic base. It’s using built in stores in your muscles to run.
The rule of thumb is 70-80% of your miles should be zone 2/easy with the rest being harder anaerobic exercise. That’s just a guide though and so is zone 2. Don’t be an autist over zone 2 either. If you feel your run is easy don’t worry if you are 2BPM over zone 2

Why are people obsessed with signing up for longer races that they don't have the fitness for instead of training to run a 5K or 10K in a reasonable time first? No wonder marathons are overcrowded.
Has the running boom and its consequences been a disaster for the human race?

Hi /roon/, I’ve running everyday for a week and I have managed to see some progress, using a heart rate belt I measured my max at 205 bpm, 75% of that would be 153 bpm which is the pace I’ve tried to keep all this time. While the progress is great and all these runs feel easy I would like advice from more experienced runners if I should keep going like this or maybe add a rest day, should I keep the goal distance (12km/day) or modify it, none of this is fast running btw so I’d appretiate tips on how much tempo distance should I add.

Hi guys I wanted to say thank you for the recommendation to start the “Couch to 5k” program. I’ve been trying to get after it to not embarrass myself running a 5k with a family member at the end of the month. It’s Apple Watch data, so take with a grain of salt, but I (allegedly) was able to run a 5k this afternoon in 29:35. I’m now looking forward to next weekend, rather than being terrified about embarrassing myself… And further, as I continue to get into shape, I’m thinking about joining a local run club in the summer to make some new friends. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction and helping me get started.
