Turn 30 this year. Want to start MMA training mainly as cardio as I only do strength at the moment. I used to do MMA a few years ago but life shit happened and I had to stop. Can you get pretty good at MMA from my age? I guess if I start now and stick with it for a while I will be okay?

If you're asking this, you're definitely lying about the first statement.
Anyone who has spent any time practicing a martial art can tell you that 6 months of training /any form/ of fighting puts you over 99.999% of the population when it comes to fighting.

I don't really have any delusions about competing except maybe some amateur bouts if I decide I even want to do that. Like I said I just want to improve my fitness specifically cardio, doing something a bit more social and fun and switch it up from just lifting all the time. Some of the "games" (eg. round robin sparring where everyone has a go at sparring each other) and stuff was legit fun.

How so? I do 0 cardio at the moment and some of the drills we used to do would get my heart pumping pretty good. It's definitely at least sort of cardio.

What incentive do I have to lie about it? I probably still am better than most people at fighting but it's been so long I would be a bit rusty and if 6 months is good enough imagine what a few years could do, even if I am 33 by the end?

Sorry for not participating in the thread. Anyways, I know a guy who started at 39. He's a family man who works the entire day at the construction site and trains for like 3-4 hours at night. He's 42 now and I've seen him kicking ass of athletes in their 20s. Pretty humble guy who actually looks older than he is, but he's powerful as fuck. Not national level, but definitely one of the best in my city in his weight class.

Pretty good is a subjective term, so I think beating 99.9999% of the world's population in combat makes you pretty good, and you can absolutely accomplish that in 6 months.

Yep.

What's your end goal then? To compete in the UFC? Probably not attainable. To be able to hold your own? Yeah, you'll be fine. To win competitions? Bro you're in your 30s have a fucking family instead of chasing participation trophies for gay sports.

It mostly depends on your iq as to how high skill you can get. Also the quality of your training partners, how lucky you get at figuring out what is effective for you.
If you took 2 people with the exact same intelligence and one was trained since 10yo, while the other put in twice the work past 20 and had higher quality coaches, then after even 1 year the noob could have the edge. But basically nobody was beating prime mike until his personal life took a huge hit and his coach died. Cus really was just in a whole league of his own in terms of style and training I'd put prime mike against any boxer in history. I bring him up only because mma doesn't really have anyone nearly as talented.

Well you also are comparing whoever to the average person. 100iq is extremely stupid, not even passing high school math level. Physically could not learn the first thing about college math if you gave them a billion dollars.

>have fun
Well some people are gonna try and actually fuck you up and the coach and gym won't do shit, so definitely don't be fucking around like it's all fun and games. Mike says he was trying to kill his opponents in the ring. You don't wanna be vs some roid user if you are both inexperienced and weak, even then no reason to give them any advantage just get strong before going to an environment like that. Nobody is checking gloves, is there even a ref who can or will stop the fight? People are crazy and this is exactly where some sadistic lunatic with a ton of steroids would be going to fulfill their desires, so be careful.
>someone who used to not be someone that one of these guys would second guess opening up with 100% strikes to the head and continue

I'm 32 and picked up boxing late last year after having trained muay thai and MMA casually on and off through my twenties
The coaches keep asking my weight and age, because they're keen to get me amateur fights (and apparently you can only get loicensed fights up until 40 or something)
So yes basically, I'm good enough already to be worth training up to fight, and you have 2 free years on me
ESPECIALLY if you're a student of the game and can distill down what you want to learn to the most useful basics. Something like
>good punch fluency, proper movement in and out and comfort in the pocket
>calf kicks, front snap kicks to the body
>a bodylock, drive to the cage and bodylock takedown from the cage
>a couple of passes to get to half guard and good control & gnp from that position
>ability to spot and grab back takes in scrambles (probably good scramble ability generally, wrestle more than you grapple), a good rnc and way to handfight for it
>a few sweeps that work well together, and leglock defence, in case you end up on the bottom
Basically, you don't need to spend hours throwing thai-style high kicks on the pads, because most of your fights for the foreseeable will be decided by punches, wrestling and being on top

I will literally fight anyone here in mma and with 1hand+kicks if they wanna queen away from a fight. How much for me to coach you? If I fight you with 1 hand and you're some little shit using steroids I expect 10k minimum and yes I'm serious this should be easy for you.

Im WAY too smart to fight you even with 1 hand tied behind your back. You're probably gonna just kick me, you must think I'm stupid. I've been doing mma for my entire life sure I'll fight you with 1 hand behind your back what's up pussy. See who the real man is.

Define pretty good. You'll never be a pro but you'll be able to beat the shit out of 99% of the population within a year or two
