Sharing desktops is a tradition but sure defaults are kinda cringe. People should make their OS soulful.

The recent XFCE move to create a Wayland compositor has finally broken me as a long-time XFCE believer. I often fooled around with other desktop environments when distro-hopping, but I always came back.
I've decided to get started on moving to awesomewm. I really wanted to use something like stumpwm, exwm, or mahogany, but since I've never gotten good at a window manager before, I'm going to start with a popular option. At least fennel provides a lisp language for writing Lua code, so I'll be able to enjoy it.
For two reasons, though, I'm looking at desktop environments too. First, I've heard some people complain about running games in awesome. Based on those complaints, it looked like it can be fixed with a config setting, but I still want a backup. Reason two is that I want to be able to hand the machine off to a tech-illiterate without giving them an instant panic attack about all the widgets and hotkeys on my machine. It sure feels like every desktop environment committed to a suicide pact with the way they're all self-destructing right now. Gnome got so hard coupled to systemd that Artix and Devuan can't run it, KDE put hard systemd coupling in the login manager, XFCE came out of hibernation to build a Rust compositor for Wayland, Budgie dropped X support, and Unity's head dev is going off to college or something.
Cinnamon is getting a Wayland compositor too, but I don't hate Wayland by itself; I only hate that X is getting dropped for Wayland. My main aggravation with XFCE is that they came out of retirement for Wayland, which makes me suspicious of their long-term plans. Mate seems like it should stay where it is for the near future. I'm unironically considering Pantheon because it has both X and Wayland, and it's familiar to any Mac/iOS friend that I shove it over to.
I honestly just feel sad. I feel like I'm watching a walled garden being built live in front of me.

I use Debian because it works well on my computer. The maintainers' personal opinions do not influence me. If they make the product bad, I'll just go find better.
It's sad that the creator of Debian died, but we should be glad and thankful that he gave us this OS. He helped make the world a better place for us.

the skin didn't change from last time, there is a button (as in every winamp-esque client) to "roll up" a particular window

(You)-posting to note that I incorrectly stated that Pantheon wasn't affected by Gnome's systemd dependency. Unless Pantheon freezes their Gnome shell, it is also affected.

>have you tried Trinity?
Normally I'm skeptical of Qt desktops, but after looking up Trinity, I see that it's Qt3. I normally see Qt having lots of inexcusable rendering bugs, but I've only experienced Qt >4.0, so maybe it'll be alright. Thanks for the rec, anon.
>>
>>108257339
thanks m8, ive been thinking of going fvwm someday, should i do so, i'll likely take your panel as a base, it reminds me of old windows, a home that is no more.
>>

artix has one iso that ships with i3, maybe try that for minimal wm configuration...?
>>
>>108257379
absolutely. fvwm is my favorite wm. i am continually surprised just how capable it is. if you do try it out id recommend using this guys config as a base
>https://datagubbe.se/fvwm/fvwm-gray2_config.txt
then just take your time figuring out how everything works. you can also use a lot of the xorg tools like xwinfo or xprop to help you when building things like panels or widgets

i recently got a 1440p monitor and i cannot use it. i do not understand how to efficiently use the space. always too many or too little windows, always too zoomed in or too zoomed out. no fractional scaling feels perfect. ive ended up just manually creating huge 100px gaps on the sides, and using very tiny windows, with my head closer to the screen. by contrast, my 1366x768 laptop feels nice.
>>
>>108262063
actually i have both a 1080p AND a 1440p monitor, and yet i always end up doing work, gaming, anything really, on the 1080p, and only use the 1440p monitor as a tv. to be perfectly honest, i dont really need it.
>Guess it's just poor 3rd worlders ITT doing a circlejerk for the last decade.

Old habit, Opera used to be amazing compared to other browsers in the early-mid 2000s so I just stuck with it (Yea I'm old.) Never even considered switching to another browser, well until now..

I just made the switch to Firefox because in my experience it runs much better on Linux and even though I tried Linux decades ago I've just recently switched completely from Windows and I'm still figuring some things out.

here's a suggestion, a year from now that choice wont mean shit, just pick whatever default is and move on with your life, time goes by in a blink of an eye... soon you'll have sciatica pain and white hair... and every time extra time will mean so much you wont even think about the things you worry right now, at the end of the day its just a computer.

you could also block images without having to get an extension
you could individually set tabs to refresh at different increments
you could tile tabs as windows within the browser so that you can look at and/or read many webpages at once!! which also came in very handy if you wanted to look at a dozen or more webcam models all at once!! :D

fuck man I completely forgot about that
>>
>>108273593
if pages changed frequently you could keep updated on what is going by just looking at the tab or hovering the tab for more details
>very useful for freeloading iykwim
i could have hundreds of tabs open and it never lagged which is very useful if you want to research multiple topics at once and be able to cross reference more effectively
firefox is great it's my current fav but opera was the greatest!!
if you like to have many tabs open i would recommend a tab suspender it is not a perfect solution but it helps with system resources it doesn't help when you want to switch between tabs in quick succession tho :(

Sir! I must inform you, add
ytdl-format="bestvideo[height<=1080][ext=mp4][vcodec^=avc]+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/best[ext=mp4]/best"
