I'll help you understand their secret sauce. It's quite simple if you've been around since early diffusion models. First, you need to understand that SD is a dogshit model, especially SD 1.5, yet people have been able to do excellent things with it. Next, you must understand that the only way NoobAI is so good on SDXL, is because the model was essentially overbaked to produce only that type of output. It's easier to see if you go back to SD 1.5, every model that you saw there was essentially just an overbaked shitmix. Because tiny models are easy to overbake. And that's the recipe behind NovelAI. First, remember the news that they bought a bunch of GPUs? What they did was perform experiments, and determined what size of dataset fits into a single SDXL-sized model when you overbake it (similar to Noob). That is, how many artists does it remember? So what they do is that they take a small model, train it like SDXL, let's call it the base (master) model. Then, based on this same base model, they take a bunch of models, train a subset of their dataset on each model, then serve an API that can instantly detect what type of model you need based on the artists you called, and if you call a mixture of models, instead of inferencing both, you inference a LoRA that is compatible with the base model, so everyone is happy, and that's how they're able to get every Danbooru artist in existence seamlessly with a smaller and less capable model. This is probably similar to what MJ does with artists under the hood. In short, there's nothing special about what they do, they've come up with nothing novel, and they simply have much more compute and serve many more models simultaneously, while taking care of that for you.

I don't know how true this is, but that actually makes the most sense and why even when NAI have "leaked" their models, it's still never as good as NovelAI itself. they probably know no local shit can fully replicate what they do, so they don't feel threatened by their own models leaking or people making stuff that tries to mimic their model. the answer is just resources. they have a lot of resources and smart algorithms that can detect exactly which amalgamation of models and loras best fit your prompt. and using a single model locally will just never replicate that. you'll have to do a lot more work to get the same clean and high-adherence output.

Memory management seems back to normalish for me with ComfyUI 0.15.1 and AMD Adrenalin 27.2.2. --disable-smart-memory is not longer required for me to avoid maxing RAM/VRAM during VAE decode and freezing Windows. The default mode seems more prone to running models partially-unloaded though, so I might still slightly prefer --disable-smart-memory for SDXL.
