Fun fact. His museum in Ogdensburg, NY sometimes has student art exhibitions from area schools, and one of my pieces got in when I was a kid.

Define your goals, outline what resources you have and what level of commitment you're willing to spend on this.

You may want to paint kinda like this guy in terms of style and narrative painting, but you only have pencil and paper and only want to be a hobbyist that learns alone.

To do that you're starting by learning from observation and nature. Look at a tree, stare at a tree and when you get sick of looking look at it some more. From that point try to draw it, starting from shapes in proportion, then values, then details.

You can look for books on (written prior to 1950) on specific topics and ways people went about their work and you can experiment with it at your leisure.

When you get good at drawing from nature, then you start making your own scenes. When you get good at that, you can start learning to paint.
