The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.
Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:
Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.
Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.
Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/pages/submissions is anything to go on.
Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.
Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.
Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites
Iconic Comics (https://www.iconiccomics.com/)
>A bit like Oni Press and Antarctic Press
>A small publisher with a focus on indie works with manga inspiration

Other open comic publishers:
Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.
Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.
Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.
Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq
Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

Inking considerations
I've always used red lines on a yellow-orange background when drawing - yellow-orange is easier on the eyes, and red is its compliment, so it stands out more. But now that I'm really trying to make a quality product, do you think it's time for me to move on to using black and white?
>pic related (the black/white here looks blue-tinted, but it's just an optical illusion)

>Find something you love to write
>Find something you love to draw
>Find something you want to say - it doesn't have to be revolutionary, it just has to be something you believe in strongly
>Mix them together
Don't be afraid to take inspiration from the things you love, too. It's a pretty common pitfall to try to explain your thing as "[X series] but with [Y twist]" just as it is to go "my series can't be inspired by anything because otherwise I'm not being original," but no idea is created in a vacuum. Every work of art was inspired by many other things, but also has its own ideas mixed in.
A generally good sign that you have a solid story is that you can explain it in a couple sentences, and it'll sound interesting.
>After dying in an accident, a juvenile delinquent is given a second chance at life by Heaven, on the condition that he acts as their agent by fighting Demons on Earth
>In a village of Ninja, a boy has a demon fox sealed inside of him. Though he's socially outcast, he's determined to prove everyone wrong by becoming the greatest Ninja
>A city girl and a monkey boy travel the world trying to collect seven magical artifacts that will grant them a wish. In the process, they battle with other people trying to steal the artifacts for themselves
>Before he was executed, the greatest pirate in history told the world that he'd hid all of his treasure in one place. A monkey boy (a different one) sets sail to try and find it, gathering a crew to help him on the way
You'll find three of these four have an active protagonist - that is, a character who wants something and is actively trying to get it. This is great for an adventure story, since it means (a) your main character is never sitting idle waiting for something to happen, they're always acting and (b) you have a really tangible goal for them to work towards, rather than something abstract like "happiness" or "fulfilment." Passive protagonists can work in the right story, though.

I'm quite good at drawing and can do any extreme perspective I can possibly think of, but I suck at the paneling and composition of the panels. I wonder if there is any way to ask and find someone willing to do the "storyboard" of the comic and I just do my thing?

I wish I could create ero-doujin again.
Fuck my plummeting libido.
I'm still 30 but I don't feel horny anymore.
Damn it.
>>
>>7877445
Connect-the-dots method is the only way I can really do it.
>come up with individual set pieces and conversations, sometimes even just a single cool double page spread I have in mind but doesn't have any context
>assign them to characters
>then build the plot around that in a way so these individual moments can take place in a way that seems natural
>if it's a fantasy/action/horror manga try not to establish too much worldbuilding in the beginning as this will hinder your ability to pivot the story
I'm sure there's people who have a full synopsis of their entire story in mind from the beginning, but I think that's probably rare.
For hobbyists like us the number of pages is the bottleneck, so I think it's crucial to scrutinize each chapter / scene / page. Does this element advance the plot or develop a character? Cut mercilessly, but don't rush, if that makes sense. I think good pacing and character interactions are the most crucial part, the plot and the artwork almost don't matter by comparison.
If it has good pacing, people will read a story about literally anything.

I found myself with one extra page once and inserted it into a slower scene and it actually improved pacing as well as served a decent narrative purpose of showing one character's reaction to recent events, so don't be afraid to occasionally slow things down.

NTA, but I find that being horny reduces your ability to discern how "titillating" things are. In the same way being really thirsty would make you drink the most disgusting shit on Earth just because you want a drink that bad, being in that elevated state of sexual arousal will make you find a lot of things attractive that you wouldn't otherwise. Maybe this can give you some insight into the types of things your audience wants to see, but it's not that conducive to a good work flow/
And I don't even make ero manga.

So from the couple pages I've seen the premise seems to be "YA demon hunter slash Exorcist"
Is there any twist to it? Do you consider this a 'pratice project' or is it the main thing you want to draw? For me, I still feel my art isn't good enough for my main project but I can't really get past the thumbnail and design stage on my sideprojects and oneshots...

Personally I usually only do it once or twice a day, but there are periods where my libido rises and I can do it up to five, and then there are periods later where it lowers and I don't do it at all, sometimes for days at a time. It ebbs and flows, and I'm young and more sexual than most people.

This is actually a reboot of the first comic I did back in 2017. I was planning to continue from where I stopped but the story was too convulted and the art bad. So I decided to make a new thing because I really like these characters.

Four is just my highest, not my daily. Usually it's just once or twice. I should have been more specific. Also if you want more examples of how bad it can be there were a couple times I went on for about 6 hours because it kept going limp and I hate not finishing what I start, though in my defense I wager I'd be faster in general if I didn't have to do it quietly when people are home.

Because this is important information for creating manga. I bet if you could get honest data from the top mangaka, you'll find they either goon a lot or very little. Either semen retention is the key or gooning is the key to great manga, and it's critical we figure this out.

You already show that by drawing the panel after the "Silence!" speech bubble with the drawing of the whip reacting to the initial thrust. Remember that while we always need to keep in mind pacing time is still an illusion in regards to reading a comic.
Like the way it initially read in your OG post, the way she started the whip and started to do a lecture, it made it seem like it took a minute for the whip to hit the character, and that is awkward to visualize cause at that point why wouldnt the bitch dodge or acknowledge that the whip is coming, like it made me think of this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1GoJk7BKd4
While in my shitty edit, you see the whip weaving and turning but you dont get the time for a lecture in between, but we get that the whip is long still.
>>
>>7880021
thats the joke I'm going for, she wouldn't step out of the way since that's her mother.
I like your edit though and I'm gonna use it, after I switch the order I'll have the final panel be a horrified face, since I plan on her whipping her ass a few more times so there will be more chances to talk while the wave is moving

I actually believe that many manga panels can be constructed in a TV aspect ratio, and it may even be the case that manga aritists imagine their scenes as anime (ie, in a TV aspect ratio) when drawing them.
However, they don't draw them as just that, because that would be really boring to look at. Those storyboard boxes are fit into manga shaped panels (of course this all happens in one step in the mind as they are imagining the panel), for example a vertical panning shot becomes a long vertical panel, an important shot becomes a large panel, a shot that only lasts for a second becomes a small panel, and overall all the panels are arranged in a way that guides the eye through the page.
>>
File: 6uyjrm.jpg (239 KB)
239 KB JPG
>>7880122
To argue my theory a bit more,
Even before the TV was invented, painting have been largely made in the same aspect ratio, that is, a landscape rectangular box.
It is simply how we see the world. We look side to side more than up and down, we percieve the world around us through a landscape rectangle (or probably more accurately an oval, but that's not practical here).
If they're not imagining their panels as actually anime before drawing it, then they're certainly imagining it as atleast animated, or rather as action happening before their eyes. Manga is very cinematic in this way, I think that is undeniable.
But to argue more also about why you shouldn't just draw your manga as a storyboard,
The way you design your panels controls the way it is read, the timing, the tone, etc.
A large panel is like a camera shot that stays on the screen for longer.
Imagine two panels of a house, like an establishing shot of it... one panel of the house is a large panel taking up half the screen, while the other is a tiny squashed panel. They're both the same image... but how you design the panel affects how the reader reads it. One is an important focus, while the other is just a passing glance.
A panel that is the same shape and size as the previous panel appears to stay in your mind for the same amount of time. It is like a metronome. In a manga this is really undesirable. Your want your manga to be dynamic. Control the timing.

Here is a good example of how changing the size and shape of your panels controls the timing.
In terms of the drawings, this entire page could be redrawn with the panels all the same size, like a storyboard. But it would be worse off if it did.
First, the establishing shot is small, it's nothing at all like the establishing shot in >>7880134 and the result is that you don't look at it for very long. If it were animated, it'd go by quickly.
The shot of the dude in the second panel is larger than the followup shot in the third panel. This makes you look at it for longer than the third panel. Him looking without speaking is more important than the panel of him speaking.
The next two panels are of a medium size... they stay on the page and pass by at a slowish pace. If it were animated, these shots each might be 2-3 seconds long.
And then finally the last panel is the largest of all. In your mind it stays on screen for a long time. The dramatic lighting coupled with no background also controls the sense of atmsophere, if this were animated, it would probably be a moment where the background noise is drowned out by the silence of the characters thoughts.
If this page were a storyboard, all of these good effects would be lost.

Here I have attempted to reformat it into a storyboard style. With the exception of the third panel which I think I fumbled, they all fit easily into a storyboard.
However you can clearly see that the original on the left is formatted much more effectively to control the timing.
On my edit... the establishing shot of the building stays on screen for too long, the second panel goes by too quickly. The pacing of the third panel is confused.
And then the final three panels go by like a metronome with no dynamic sense of timing.
The original feels animated, through mere static drawings there is a sense of a director controlling the timing of each shot... whereas in the storyboard version, it feels lifeless.

One last thing, by making the boxes not rectangles at all, but more dynamic shapes with diagonal lines, this makes the whole page even more dynamic. This level of dynamism is impossible with a storyboard

A proper opening chapter has 30+ pages my guy.
Storyboarding 20 pages, if you actually think about paneling, composition and so on, takes about as long as rendering 1-2 pages (depending on the detail of your artwork), but knowing where to go next will easily recoup that time later in the process.
It will also allow you to draw the chapter 'out of order' and save the pages with elements you find hardest to draw for last and start with the easy ones (or vice versa).
Not to mention, it's immensly valauable to view the timeline of your entire chapter on one page. You'll probably realize that you're reusing certain poses or types of shots too much and make adjustments to create more variety. If you just start drawing without knowing where it will take you, you willl either have to painstakingly re-draw sections or release the chapter in a subpar state relative to what it could have been with negligible additional effort.
Just do your storyboard.
Better yet, post it here when it's finished. It's always fun to see those.

Fair enough.
When I first started I was surprised how hard it is to size and place speechbubbles correctly. I do traditional drawings, but I always scan my storyboards just so I can insert some lettering in the correct font.
>>
>>7880149
All of this because... why? Why does he even want to focus on being so limiting to do this at all? Is it because it's overwhelming? Because personal expectations for how to create the layouts is too high? I have to wonder.
I can understand that looking at a traditional page layout and not knowing how to order your own comics is overwhelming. I think we all had to find a way over this hump, I've stubbed my toes on it in at least two separate instances but fixing it always came back down to KISS, "Keep It Simple, Stupid". Even the other pages posted here weren't WOAAAH SO CRAZY or over the top (except Bleach). They are organized to serve the narrative and support the story with the art within them. Readers don't complain about panel layouts being too boring because they don't think about that, only artists do that. If the reader finds the page boring, it's because the execution of events therin aren't encouraging people to keep reading which is a more complicated problem.

It's because a great many people see panelling not as a window into the story, but as a challenge in abstract art, something to be toyed with, where they believe the best panelling is one that is most extreme.
My view is that you shouldn't notice panelling at all. When panelling is doing its job, you don't see it, you are sucked into the world of the story. And it is generally the case that simpler panelling does that better than something more experimental.

I reckon it's half and half
On the one hand, panels are a method of conveying visual information, and so should be laid out in the way that most effectively conveys the information. Big important panels should be big. Short, quick panels should be small. So on and so on. But they're also part of the artistic medium - we're not making a pamphlet on how to operate heavy machinery here, we're making art.
That means you must sometimes break away from the most efficient ways to do things to make bold, experimental statements that leave an impact on your reader. Just as moments in your story should impact a reader and leave them remembering it once they're done, and just as certain panels should be drawn with extra care or with a bold vision, you should have a few pages that are arranged in a striking way.

Perhaps it's down to each person's opinion of what the medium should be, but I personally am an extremist in my view that a comic should be immersive in the same way that a movie should be immersive. I cannot think of a situation where a comic is improved by reminding me that it is indeed a comic and not a living breathing story.
To me, playing with the panels in this sort of way is simply novelty.
Whereas to stick with the immersion and tell a story, that approaches a much higher art.

You get me, anon. I don't care if the paneling from page 1 til the end is just a series of rectangular boxes of varying sizes as needed. I don't want to consciously think about the paneling. When I read manga... every manga I read is an immersive world. Whether it be My Hero Academia, or Inuyasha, or Fullmetal Alchemist, or Saint Seiya, etc. that's just my taste, maybe you like something like Ruri Rocks or Steins;Gate, whatever. They're all fun and exciting stories. You're taken into a fictional world, with characters that feel alive. You become emotionally attached to their world and their story. They all feel alive.
To create a world that feels alive. To me that is surely the highest form of art.
But to settle for just playing around with panelling? Some LSD inspired thing that nobody understands?
If here in the west we had a whole industry of immersive stories like they do in Japan, I'd have no problem with the odd acid trip comic here and there. But we don't. Whenever I look for indie comics, all I see is this kind of stuff.
It's like looking for a place to eat and everywhere you go is an experimental gorumet restaurant. That's great, but I just want something to eat.
We've got the avant garde but we don't have the conventional.
Whenever I see a weird experimental artsy comic, all I see is someone with artistic talent who chose to waste it on novelty rather than creating something actually worthwhile.
>>
>>7880388
I actually like this though, but I think it works better in moderation. DC is always trying something neat with panels and sometimes it works, other times it makes me think they wouldn't have to rely on gimmicks if the story was better.

That's kind of cringe though, isn't it? The point of media is to educate people or waste their time and make money doing it, getting them attached to characters so they'll buy merch. Also if a fictional story doesn't take a moment to remind you that it's fictional, I as a writer can't feel smart and superior which is why I write my characters looking at the viewer sometimes to say "gee, this sure is a manga, isn't it?" And let's not forget that every good story needs product placement and references to popular IPs so the reader knows its all a part of the slop shared universe where every piece of entertainment is connected.

...but what if it was just normal?
Be the judge yourself. I personally think drawing it normally like this, it's more immersive. I didn't even bother to read what was going on in the original, it was too overwhelming, but when presented like this, it's easy to digest.

Fuck me man, thirded
This kind of thing makes me wanna blow my head smoove off. It's one thing to have a reference off hand as a treat or a wink and a nod, but it's another to do it over, and over, and over- specifically when there are no useful ties to the plot. I say this because when it's intentional you get something like say, Steve Lichman, which is one of my favorite comics ever- but everything referenced is baked into the story and follows it's own rules. Dragon's Dogma is a story built on a fantasy world being contained in a video game! This fact did not make the experience worse, because they knew how to make it work within the context of that game. Shoving 15 thousand anime and video game references in my face where the sole revelance is ITS THE THING is painful!!!
I'd say this is largely an indie problem, it isn't, but indie authors naturally lack the kind of guidance that would steer them from careening violently off the referential "meta contextual humor" cliff. And by guidance I mean they need to get they monkey ass beat.
>>
>>7880567
Kek you're having fun editing these, huh? You're really good at it though. Anyway this looks alright but for at least this one specifically, I do prefer the original version. It's not a defense of all gimmick panel pages, but realizing he was holding up all the panels in the giant hope symbol was a neat feeling at the end. You could say this is part of the issue with (at least modern) amerilard capeshit, but I have a different mindset when I read these than when I read manga or most other stuff. During any big moments in an arc, it's in the back of my head (either because of the story or general meta knowledge) that this probably isn't one of the IP's defining moments, also a lot of them might have decent build up for what they are but it isn't the same as like going from the start of the Namek Saga to the end of the Freeza battle, it's maybe 4 or 8 issues of a one-off story that might be referenced down the line or maybe not and it's just having its moment here which is probably the only place it will matter either because of writer changes or crossover event shakeups, so I just enjoy it for what it is and move on unless there is something particularly extraordinary about it which isn't too often. In fact the most I can really hope for in capes is for a run to at least be consistently entertaining, it's a low bar and few clear it. I mostly just like the Flash both because either one of them appeals to me and because the dud stories are few and far between. I like Superman too but his runs are on and off imo so I don't follow most of his stories.

I personally think it's worse if it's an important moment.
Because these kinds of panel designs are inherently distracting. They're so bold and eye-catching that you can't help but stop reading and look at the panelling itself.
Immersion is forcefully taken away at a moment in the story where immersion is most important.
Pic related is the precise moment Superman dies in Death of Superman '92
When you see this page... instead of being immersed in the story, shocked to see that Superman has died... in this precise moment, you are taken out of the action and forced to think "oh hey they drew it inside the reflection of hte camera, how creative- oh yeah Superman died also"
It's like listening to the big climax of a long song.... and you hear a distracting sound from outside, completely ruining it.

Now I know I'm ranting a bit but I want to try to make the argument that actually these kinds of experimental panels aren't even skilled at all.
This is an overlook of an issue of Absolute Wonderwoman. Pay attention to page 4, the big artistic panelling page. It's really creative right? Surely an artist to have made this must be a master of panelling?
...and yet, the rest of the issue consists almost entirely of boring wide screen storyboard esque panels. No master of panelling would ever do such a thing. It cannot be a stylistic choice either, because they don't do it fully consistantly.
Frankly it strikes me as amateurish panelling.
If the artist understood the effect that panelling has on things like the timing, tone, etc. They would never opt for such a boring panel layout, many of which are really unsuited to the content of their page.
And so coming back to the fancy page #4... I think it's unreadable. The artist has broken the rules before they even knew them. This isn't a flex from an artist who is a master of panelling, this is the comic equivelant of the world's fastest violin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_tQk25pR60
It feigns mastery through boldness, but truly skilled panelling is subtle.

Not in defense of it, but it's a perfect encapsulation of that story from what I remember. I enjoyed it enough as a kid but rereading the special a few years ago, the arc was more about the fact that it was happening/going to happen and everyone else's reactions during the event, so that pic about sums it up. It's not about Superman, it was about the fact that he dies. That animated movie from 2018 or whatever did it way better.

If those are like memories or something or are relevant to the thing in the middle of the circle then I could see it having some sense of potential narrative purpose, but it's true that they don't do too much with the rest of the panels besides use them for their basic purpose. Now show us on the manga where DC comics hurt you.
>>
>>7880589
when I was getting into making comics I read some beginner books (how to draw the marvel way, etc) and there's actually nothing covering paneling. this sounds weird but in the guides western pros have they ussualy start at figure drawing, then constructing anatomy, clothing and objects, perspective, and maybe composition. Framed Ink is a really popular book and pretty much sticks with the cinematic landscape . I don't think these guys are choosing the long horizontal panel thinking it will be great, they just accept it as the default and never question why. so then you get the odd artist who comes along wanting to change this but not knowing how so they default into playing with graphic shapes.
>>
>>7880666
I think maybe western companies like marvel thought paneling was just the wrapping or scaffolding and not part of the experience, so they kept it as basic as possible. So paneling would be lumped in with prep and mechanical set up like getting your pencils ready, choosing the right paper, etc.

A choice of narrative style is not the same as limiting your direct approach. I can choose to do make a european styled comic, or 4 komas, or a scrolling webtoon, but those choices are a matter of taste and vision. That's not even to speak ill of limitations in general because that's the sort of thing that can help you grow as an artist... That being said, the style is not at fault. You can build a comic that way the same way you can build it >>7880139 this way or >>7880405 this way. The issue at stake seems to be in assuming he doesn't have much experience, and so is seeking some work around to avoid what be perceives as too hard to do right now.
If he (or anyone) can answer questions like "Why am I choosing this route" or "Is this right for me?" honestly then choosing one way or the other is not up to anyone to debate and at that point it's just a matter of commitment. As a first timer though what doing this might lead to is a lot more hardship in a hobby that is REALLY unforgiving, and where the rewards are usually not tangible.

Well part of it is big 2 aren't about art most of the time, at least not beyond what the artist puts into the panels. I'm not saying a writer can't understand this sort of thing but I imagine part of the issue is that the stories are penned by writers who might not know much beyond "put words, describe scene" which is why DC stories (I don't read Marvel) are like a sequence of events without much visually connective tissue, like the other anon pointed out. The artist has to think of a way to make it look interesting (and make their portfolio look good) so we get stuff like that WW comic. There's not much of a personal element to these since production is a conveyor belt I think, unless a writer and artist happen to get along or something. We could go on and on about the problems of the US comics industry but that's not what we're here for
, we're here to talk about jacking off and the consequences of chronic gooning.
Hey does anyone know a comic hack that makes it clear youre supposed to focus on two line of events at the same time? Here the characters are having a separate convo, but I cant seem to find a way to make that graphically clear.
>>
>>7880589
My big issue with Comics is that I dont like how they do the speech bubbles and the pacing at all. The last page of the third row ilustrates that well. It doesnt matter how good the art is, the artist doing an extra page to make the reading flow better or to focus in their expression is much better than an entire dialogue sequence in just one panel. The aesthetic of a comic is the whole thing: Good art, paneling, pacing, speech flow, narrative... and all that to assemble one chapter.
Old comics used to be better about this problem but modern ones I can only remember the first edition of gwenpole being good. The boyz was probably the worst comic with this problem I have ever read.

The thing about this is as a reader i'm only focusing on one set of characters at a time anyway. With that in mind, you don't have to think about it as me needing to read both at once if I already understand all four are existing in the same space. Just focus on one set of characters then move to the other.

hello this is because comic artists are not who panels the comic thanks for listening
in the western system the roles are very heavily split up. writer writes the script. storyboard artist/penciller panels the comic and does the sketches. inker inks those sketches. colorist colors those inks. letter letters the result. overlap is forbidden.

You would probably have to give the two parallel conversations their own unique border. Nothing too crazy but something that makes one obvious clear group versus the other.
Ive only ever seen one clear example, and it was with this comic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbeGRfwq9Ls
You see there are three stories going on, but each have a unique style and a unique way of dealing with the comic panel borders so their are clear groups.
Also something that this video brings up is planning the events so the panels are horizontal. Like one convo could be on the top and the other could be on the bottom half of the page, and have both continue on horizontally until both segments end and we get back to a regular format.
>>
>>
>>7880767
Yeah, I thought about moving the right side convo one page over and like you said set it in the same time frame. >entire dialogue sequence in just one panel
In addition to just being tedious to read, it's also at odds with the sense of timing in the comic, it breaks the animation and therefore also breaks the immersion.
Look at this Spider-man page and consider how long it would take someone to crash through a window... and couple that with how long it would take to dish out that one-liner (more like ten-liner).
These two things should not be different.
Words said in the speech bubble should be words that are believable to have been said in the time frame of the drawing they're attached to. If they go on too long, it grinds the action to a halt.
The only words Spider-man should have said in this entire page should have been
>"Luck you call it!?"
And then the rest of the speech should have been delivered over the course of like four panels with the two of them fighting.

This is also something I never liked about capeshit and no, there is no reasonable defense for it. You might be able to try if the dialogue was actually good but it just isn't, so you now have too much speech in a moment that only needs one line at best. It's writers huffing their own farts and having no sense of visual pacing.

it wasn't really an open industry, you couldnt just make a comic and sell it. The big companies made sure the concept of comics was synonymous with their slop. If black people were allowed to make comics, it would have been like what happened to music during that time.
>>
>>7881399
A big part of that was due to the comics code. It really kind of shaped what comics would be throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s, which is why Superhero comics from Marvel and DC were what floated to the top. There were probably dozens of underground comic printing companies during that era, its just that without support from the main publishers, their reach wasn't as far. The comic code wasn't even like an actual law or anything, you just couldn't be carried by the big two.
I think that after decades of superheros, American comics just kind of defaulted to that. But even today, many of the smaller companies are doing way more than just superheros.

Nta but part of it is that capeshit can be any genre but with recognizable heroes thrown in. Slice of life, mystery, action, high concept scifi, old west, fantasy, isekai, mecha, anything, it's an adaptable genre so I guess that helped it stay relevant.

This was a relatively easy way to get published in a commercial magazine where I can get paid to make comics.
None of the people I've been watching over the years trying to get published in general audience magazines have managed to land a serialization yet, and they're all more skilled than I am. I tried a different approach and it might work out... it remains to be seen if I'll turn out successful.
While it's not like I hadn't made porn before, it's always just because among my story ideas, some of those involve the characters fucking. Not because I'm just so horny I can only draw porn, or because I'm particularly good at it.
Some comments I've gotten lead me to think my porn might not be horny enough. I don't put much stock in stray remarks like that though.

Maybe in context with comics and i'd group letterers as people who seem to have an inflated sense of self worth even though they just fill text all day. As a general sentiment though I find it silly. Beautiful prose is like drawing with words but it's much harder because there's no real instruction or guidance on how to do it. In a way i'd almost consider it one of the purest forms of art.

They are usually used when actions between panels happen at the same time, plus you should do the face in the larger part of the panel and then the text on the other part

I usually don't pull them out aside from action scenes, you have to have a good feel for when you think it'd work best and if it fits the composition of the contents inside it as well as how it reads on the page in relation to everything else.

Get a feeling so complicated on this case.
On one side, you have guy like Gamon Sakurai who went from making loli porn to make motherfucking Ajin.
Whilst the rest go legit to do…
…softcore porn?
Like toned down version of what they usually do in their porn work?
What's the point then?
It's like booking a prostitute just to have a leisure chat with them. I know this kind of linework exists in Japan, but still what the fuck.

I imagine in most cases, they move on to projects with much broader appeal. Sure, you've probably made a name for yourself and gotten a small following, but now that people know you and you've "proven" yourself to a degree, that probably opens yourself to a lot more larger projects.

Everyone struggles. there will always be something new to learn or something you realize you didn't know or haven't done, so it's struggles the whole way up unless you're a real old fart pro. Everyone's human so they have physical limits too. This kind of thing is ignored by consumers and artists who haven't stopped being consumers.

I've mostly been keeping to myself while I figure out this group of storyboards. The start of this arc had a much slower pace than I expected from the script. I ended up with a complete deadzone when it comes to action. 5 chapters without any fighting. I decided since tetsuji is going to teach Hilda it would be better for him to test her immediately. Rather than rushing to where the rest of the arc takes place and having to teach her mid fight.
I'm trying to introduce a power system that all the characters can play around with relatively late. I want to pace it right so it lands with readers that might not have expected this. The basic elements of the system are really generic so I want to introduce them quickly and present the unique stuff faster.

the 2nd one. I didn't intend to have a shonen battle power system at first but I lost my confidence in making entertaining shonen fights using only ghostbuster-type tools, and random demon powers. I want something a little more universal/accessible to the side characters. I built a system around events and powers already shown in the series so I was restricted a lot. Now I have a 7 page document of stuff that sounds like a fake lifestyle changing sudo-science

it's isekai slop but i want to pump out an idea so i stop stagnating and improve my writing not just my art.
the basic idea about the story is about a fantasy world in which Heroes are summoned to fight off threats that normal people cant handle. As such Heroes are considered above the law and paragons of order but can normal people really live up to these ideals and the consequences of such a system.
The first 2 chapters follow Casimir a young village boy, who once wanted to be a Hero but now knowing its impossible has settled to eventually running his deceased fathers shop, much to his mothers detest whose a renowned healer in their little village. As Cas and his friends are playing a, newly summoned Hero falls from the sky, plummeting into some ruins in the distance, Cas and his young friends rush off to see the new hero much to the anger/worry of their parents, the ruins are full of small monsters easy to kill but still a challenge for children, they find the hero dying of exhaustion, surrounded by a hundred monsters he's killed. The children bring him to their village to be cared for by Cas's mother. They are proud to have saved a Hero. Several days later the Hero awakens and he begins killing randomly, setting the little town on fire. The Hero wasn't someone great, he was a normal person deeply troubled in his previous life, suffering from schizophrenia, he'd killed himself previously. He never wanted to be resurrected and summoned to some foreign world, now lost and confused with a already weak psyche he's fully deluded believing this is all some dream.
Here's the first fully inked page.

I haven't posted my manga anywhere yet outside of here.
I wonder if it would be better to produce like 20 chapters to serve as a launching off point, produce a bunch of advertising for it, etc. Make it a big release.

What's the way to go?

I've also thought about streaming myself making my manga.
Is it a bad idea to break the magic in this way? Not just showing the thing being made, but also spoiling it for anyone watching.
When a chapter of weekly shonen jump comes out, it's a big surprise to find out what happens in the latest chapter. People read it for the story, they don't care about the craft behind it. Would I be shooting myself in the foot by not having that sense of magic?

Here's another question to ask:
>how long is your manga
That is to say, when it's finished, how long will it be? If you don't know chapters, then how many equivelant anime episodes? Is this a 12 episode anime, a 24 episode anime, or are you making the next One Piece here?
>>
>>7882848
>TL;DR Dump a couple chapters and then start interacting with the wider internet.
The path to popularity is reliant on already having a platform, which is a bit of a catch-22; you need people to know who you are to get more people to know who you are. People barely read things that are advertised to them. Of all the people who ever even see your art, less than 5% interact with it, and of those less-than-5%, less than 5% of THOSE will go to your bio or your personal page or whatever else to read more. If the number of people who are seeing your art is very small, 5% of 5% will round to zero.
You don't need to start from the bottom though; making fanart, interacting with the art community, putting your name out there by using OTHER THINGS that are already popular, lets you get a real leg up. Practical examples
>A lot of original creators got popular because their fan art got popular.
>A lot of competitive video game streamers got popular because they did professional coverage for whatever e-sports game they'd eventually stream
>A lot of youtubers got their start covering at-the-time trendy topics (Remember how Pewdiepie got famous for playing slenderman five decades ago?)
Most Youtube videos have less than 100 views even if they're years old, most twitch streamers have less than 5 viewers, most posts on social media have less than 5 likes. Don't become part of this group slaving away trying to be the one-in-a-million that gets popular from doing their own thing and nothing else. Contribute to things people are interested in, and that interest will rub off on you.
I'm talking a lot about the internet here, but this has always been true. Most manga wouldn't be popular if they weren't published in a store where people already go to, or as part of a magazine people already buy.

Dramas becoming suddenly violent is a crutch. I just watched the Maltese Falcon and the entire finale was engaging despite a minor altercation only being part of it and not even the real "final battle" of the movie which was just a revealing conversation. Pro tip: if you're doing one genre without the intent of switching genres but you suddenly switch genres to try and make it interesting at the end, you aren't using that initial genre as effectively as you could or should have been.

I can't make it because I'm too focussed on my current story which will take many years to finish, but here's another ideas I'd like to make
>inspired by Space Engineers Scrapyard Survival and Factorio
>story begins with our characters being ejected from their spaceship by pirates,
>they are hurled towards a deserted planet that is the galaxy's scrap yard
>its magnetic field or whatever blocks all radar from escaping the planet, making it logistically worthless to the galaxy
>but also it means they can't contact anyone to rescue them
>the story is basically a desert island survival story but scifi and on a planet full of scrap
>being engineers, they cobble together the scrap into functioning machines to help them survive
>the planet is filled with man and metal eating alien bugs in vast quantities that they have to fend against
>the story focusses on the drama of the main cast struggling to survive in very deserted island story fashion
>they eventually build a whole factory to build a rocket to escape
>the story would appeal to Factorio and Space Engineers players, with lots of legally distinct references throughout

Totally, I agree. I've heard it referred to as a "peril set piece" where a drama is quickly resolved by putting characters in a dangerous situation and then having one saved, or the problematic character killed off so all the relationships can neatly wrap themselves up now that the thorn in their side is gone (without anyone having to make hard decisions.) Status-quo affair tend to be REALLY guilty of this, since you can wrap up what SHOULD be a multi-episode break-up arc by just having character A save character B, and of course they're back in love again because A just saved B's life. See you to do it again next week. It's a "set piece" - not a satisfying conclusion, but just an exciting theme park ride.
With that said, it's a tool, and that means it can be used wrong or it can be used right. I really want to make art of all sorts.

>>7882875
>All art requires self expression
>Self expression is to open yourself to vulnerability
Not necessarily. A person exoresses themselves in everything they do, if they choose to create something without having fully accepted themselves then there is some value in that as well and it is something you would likely not have thought to create if you were not similarly holed up inside when you decided to make art. Although I guess you could technically say the creator opens themselves up to vulnerability with any action they make, it's just that the work reflects their desire to hide those vulnerabilities.
>>
>>7882875
>All art requires self expression
wrong. that is marxist dadaist propaganda. art is beauty, and beauty is a moral imperative to society. expression is degenerate self-indulgence which predicated on the glorification of the self and the erosion of duty.

I just don't think people would want to see the characters coming up with a new tool to defeat monster of the week ghosts for the entire series. Without change, the series lacks potential to grow much further on from what I've already established. Any new arc I tried to write became really formulaic. The best battle manga right now have their characters using familiar tools in unique ways in battle. It's more engaging if the reader can speculate on what might happen in a fight based on previously read material. It's risker to hope you can wow them each time with whatever shiny new power/tool you gave the protag this week. With the system I have now, It's a lot easier to imagine the actual content of future fights. what growth moments a character might have. goals for them to hit long term. It's a lot easier to think ahead.

But what is Beauty?
Surely it isnt just recreating the natural world, or else there would be no art greater than just going outside
Surely it isnt just art that’s difficult to create.
And surely it isnt just things that are aesthetically appealing in a vague sense; what is aesthetically appealing can be outlined in general terms, but not with much specific besides “sunsets are nice”, “symmetry is cool” and “young people tend to have more attractiveness than old ones”
Too much beauty is revolting.

Somewhat true I guess! I basically caught a lucky wind by making a popular short and rode someone else's coat tail, that seems to be the only way to get your foot in the door. Everything else though seems to hinge on paying attention to what people like and catering to it. It's funny, because now I understand that making popular things is pretty easy but everything people like ends up being too boring to me so I don't wanna draw it.
What i've learned over the years is that a regular presence and consistent activity will eventually get you a group of fans of some kind. Not saying they'll be super talkative, but they'll be there. Oh and apparently tight knit groups of Brazilians.......... success is success.

I think most people have no capacity to read people. As in their faces and movements and think in their shoes. Those language arts classes in school where you had to write book reports and stuff, that's HARD for most people. They don't just read a book and understand it, they nede to decipher the words, that's why reading is considered something that makes you smart. They think reading a fiction novel is like working out for your brain, isntead of just enjoying a good story. This realization makes it hard for me to stay hopeful for the future of manga and comics.

I'm gonna say no. Not most, but are they out there? Oh yeah. I have worked around the dumbest, most slack jawed low class mfs out there. Meth heads, inbreds, people who lived almost literally in dirt and smelled like basements and who could do the bare minimum of passing one drug test. Even if some of them were nice, only a handful of them had the cognitive ability to empathize. I've had better coworkers, but my experience has crafted a solid picture of what dumb looks like.
I will agree people (...in the US...) on a general basis struggle with mid to "advanced" comprehension of texts. I've even had people tell me they couldn't understand posts or letters i've written? But whatever man, I'll keep plugging away anyhow.

anyone have a video of a real manga artist working on a page start to finish, with no jumpcuts or timelapses? Theres plenty of videos of them working on inking but they go so slow that they spend like an hour just feathering in one head of hair or something, and it doesn't seem realistic. That's how long it takes for professional level inking. I have watched many inkers from American comics as well, good inking is simply a time consuming process which is why it's a whole job in itself.

We know from manga that producing 15-20 pages of industry standard b&w per week is at the very edge of what is humanly possible and it requires you to adopt a work schedule that will literally shorten your lifespan by decades on average.
For amateurs and hobbyists there's always ways to get faster by getting better at drawing or getting better at cutting corners. As a pro your raw drawing speed eventually plateaus.
Like the other anons said, most mangaka have several assistants and western comics are either 'small scale' or big collab projects.
If you want to look at a pro for insights on speed, I recommend looking at Kubo and how he uses paneling and screentones to minimize, subsitute and enhance backgrounds. Being intricate at all times is simply impossible, there is no trick.

At some point I was drawing digitally until I realized not having limits was causing me a lot of trouble, so eventually I switched to sketching and inking everything on paper. So with that in mind considering all of my time, it took me nine years to hit my stride. If we're talking about only the time I spent knuckling down, then two years. I wasn't exactly a beginner when I began drawing it full time, but I probably had my neck just above the bar that would be considered "standard".
I am here to preach the good word about traditional art.
Forcing yourself to adapt to the limitations of paper and pen will help you learn to make the most of the space you have, and it will guide to to create something unique to you! Drawing comics quickly is the easiest way to cram improvement in a short window provided you don't cheat yourself by using shortcuts early on. That's like cutting off your shins with an ankle grinder. What that does is leave a living record of failure to move forward in any significant way and everyone will see it and notice it.
Sorry I'm yapping. The only real answer is to love drawing and do it a lot.

NTA but I will not draw traditionally because my nerves are fucked in my left hand and I can't draw lines well at all. Even my handwriting is basically illegible. I applaud overcoming adversity, but this is not a battle I wish to fight.
Thank God for the digital age

>If you want to look at a pro for insights on speed, I recommend looking at Kubo and how he uses paneling and screentones to minimize, subsitute and enhance backgrounds. Being intricate at all times is simply impossible, there is no trick.
why would backgrounds factor into this? that's something that would be handed off to an assistant anyway, it's not taking a significant amount of inking time for the author.

miura famously released less and less work the more detailed each chapter got, so clearly it didn't work out and he (even ignoring his death) had to compromise on the release frequency.
the lesson to be learned here is don't try to draw the best possible drawings you can for comics. simplify. these aren't going to the louvre to be studied meticulously, they're going to (at best) to be printed, skimmed over quickly by 99% of readers and then discarded. pick a level of artwork you can make quickly and efficiently and can still tell the story through and stick to that. save the artist flexes for stray illustrations, not the comic itself.
>>
>>7883453
Not him, but from what i understand assistant draw alot more than backgrounds. They can do some background characters, objects the protags are using, sfxs, pattrrns on characters, and crosshatchin. Alot of mankaga just draw the characters in a void and hand it off

Consider your physical energy and attention is like a spending budget. You don't want to pinch everywhere, because then your art will be impoverished and the product will be cheap and poor. Instead, you just have to be conservative with your general spending, and give everything you have to your money shots.
People really don't hang onto every panel of course, but they will remember those peaks when they are good... and ESPECIALLY if they are bad.

People love dragon ball's art, and many hold it up as the gold standard. Right?
But even in its "money shots", it stuck with its simple cartooning. The author didn't suddenly make a ultra complex shot of a dude with realistically shaded musculature from a curvilinear perspective. It's kept simple and clear and consistent with the rest of the comic.
The priority was conveying the story in a clear, easily readable manner and moving on. Not to prove how well he can draw or pushing his own illustration skills. That stuff is not that important to drawing a comic.
This doesn't just apply to comics for boys. Look at shoujo manga. Look at Uraswa's manga. It's kept relatively simple. Yes, there are some people who do flex. You don't need to do that. It doesn't make the comic better.
>>7883567
Well, it doesn't for me. There's some skill transference but it does very much feel like using a different tool entirely.

You should either improve your handwriting drastically, or type your text.
This text currently is hard to read, and that is detrimental to the readability of your story. You must be able to read your text immediately at a glance, it must be extremely legible

That's just not true, through everything from the manuscripts giant size and fact that it's full bleed, to hundreds of tiny hatching marks for the effect lines and tone placed over them. This illustration is detailed and well crafted, every stroke is carefully considered. It doesn't compare to the right page at all in quality of details.

With Redwall, it would be fun to make a sort of mockup page. But currently there aren’t any long-term plans, Redwall or otherwise. I currently just prefer making these proof-of-concept pieces.

I use REALLY high stabilization and a lot of digital only tools. For example, I have my tablet set up so that it only draws when I hold down the primary click button, so I can line up my stroke without having to hover my shaky hands in the air above the tablet. Other tricks like that too.

how bad does a finished page need to be for you guys to go back and rework it? I ask cause I keep going back and refurnishing old pages, it feels like a waste of time, but at the same time I keep improving and get the impulse to go back and redo everything. Is it actually worth it or is it better to let it be? Post some examples of pages you went back to and why.
>>
>>
>>
>>7883341
for me its not really speed but mental energy. If it takes ten hours to draw a page then theoretically you can draw a page every day, but so much goes into it that you are mentally burnt out at the end of each day. So you can't keep it up every day. But if I was just sketching the pages and drawing the characters, I could probably do many more pages a day AND be having more fun so I'd be more rested each day.
Now I get it, after hitting your natural speed cap, you have to save time on other things like backgrounds and editing, and rest well so you start each session with 100% energy. .

Daydreaming about...
>OP/EDs in the potential anime adaptation
>Which voice actors would ideally voice your characters
>4chan threads about your manga/anime
>Youtubers making videos about your manga ("The best manga you never heard about!", character analysis, ETC.)
>People making memes/shitposts about your manga (X is best girl, X is a jobber, ETC.)
>People using crops of your manga pages as reaction images
>Seeing fan art
>Seeing erotic fan art (good & bad)
>Fan fiction
>People cosplaying your characters
>Your characters being used as profile pictures by fans on social media
>Anime figures of your characters
Yeah. I've daydreamed about all this and more but ultimately I'm too humble to think any manga I create is worthy of any of it.

I usually end up thinking more about what type of video game my manga would end up being, like what genre and mechanics than what an anime adaptation would be like.

I think this is specifically a delusion of wanting the popularity of making something. A small degree of this is not shameful, it's expected and normal that you want people to read and share something you're proud of. I got my own live read once from a stranger and that was such a treat, haha. But in the end the fantasy is a destructive demon. Fantasies of popularity easily warp into dejection and shame and make your idea of success dependant on strangers making memes instead of making something valuable. The fact of the matter is most professional authors don't even get this kind of attention. Many more sell enough books to stay in the game but will never have loud fans like this, or a tv show or animation, w/e
Anyway also when you get obsessed with sharing parts of your story that hasn't happened it rewards your brain with a dopamine hit for something you haven't yet made. So if you're trying to make something it's prudent to avoid these kinds of traps. That's why it's super important to draw as much as possible!!

Well first off, it depends entirely on the script/story
My general rule though is that its easier to just bite the bullet and make an extra page then try to go back to old work and re-arrange everything. Making brand new drawings that you werent planning on can suck but its a lot less work then trying to patch work old shit

Maybe, but that ruins the narrative I built in my head about series that start unique and then devolve into Naruto Bleach Z. I know it might be a bit much of an ask but I'd like it if you could redo your first chapter to suit my argument's requirements so I can be correct and not have to cope with having made a baseless assumption that was proven wrong about your manga.

I'm shocked at the responses I've been getting about introducing a power system. My main genre has always been battle manga. There's already a disconnected set of shonen type powers shown. I'm just taking what already exists and connecting the dots. I always intended to scale up the battles. The premise is about the world ending. This scooby doo gang isnt going to survive that with air guns stuffed into paper towel rolls.

Only here so far. There are only 12 pages so far, and it starts more or less in the middle of the story rather than the proper beginning.
I will eventually go back to the actual beginning, but I want to get some practice in drawing a comic. As you can maybe see, I've improved somewhat since the first page.

The only weak drawing is the one I highlighted in pic related, you kind of lose the form of the body as the character is pouncing. I think if you shortened the sleeves to make em less big and add like a line or two to define the chest it improves slightly

I just don't feel confident enough to work right now. It feels like I'm making things for the sake of it rather than actually being inspired. writing one shots for the sake of it rather than having a real idea. making fan art for the sake of it. feels like I'm not asking what I want, or what others want anymore. I wouldn't know the answer anyway.
