for the overwhelming majority it's really not as much as it looks
you get people online exploding their minds over porn comms going for triple digits, even thousands, but these artists might spend days or weeks working on them and they may still have to pay income tax and get no working benefits, no pension, and have to deal with the extreme volatility of their craft that means their 1200$ commission might be the only work they do all month.
kind of lucrative as a side hustle, but compared to a regular career it's not that outstanding.
The only reliable way to make a "lot" of money a freelance artist is to live in a country with extremely low purchasing power.
Alternatively, start a patreon for a game or comic or something. But those are hardly reliable.

Job in tech or finance or medicine or consulting or underwater welding and draw in your nights.
You'll probably never be a remarkable or notable artist, but
>most real working artists never become remarkable or notable artists, and
>You can still get middling good and it's a great hobby
every other form of paid non-corporate art you name is pretty much haggling
>do I wanna make 3k/yr or 15k/yr doing this
because you already need pretty extraordinary success to even get into these ranges.

If you're an absolute god-tier illustrator, there might be OK money doing furry shit or tutoring rich kids.
Otherwise you would be much better off working on an oil rig, Australian mine, etc. living like a monk, and investing everything you can. Pretty much everyone who is in good physical shape and understands basic technology can earn doctor-and-lawyer tier wages just working in a nasty, dangerous manual trade. Once you're pulling in six figures, you can live a reasonable life on a fraction of your income and invest the rest. Even if you don't know shit about investing, a generic index fund will double your (inflation-adjusted) money in a decade or less. At that point, you're a millionaire if you managed to keep your earnings high and your spending under control. You can then quit the tough job and either live on the interest forever or get a less difficult job (e.g. managing mine or oil rig workers) and keep accumulating wealth. A really good investment portfolio can go from 1 million to 1 billion in a human lifetime, so you can get ultra-rich like this if you are both smart and disciplined. This probably requires less effort, talent, and dedication than simply earning enough to survive as an illustrator.
Twenty years ago you might have been better off studying finance or something, but with the current best predictions of the future, probably better to just start earning high wages ASAP.

You will spend the first few years drawing for free to build an audience on social media. Even a simple waist-up pinup with no background can take up to five hours. You won’t be able to do that if your only motivation is potential maybe-money.

You should ABSOLUTELY start drawing and uploading furry porn and hentai on some website. That's an excellent use of your time and you'll earn so much money
