Kicking off the new thread with a photo dump I guess. February photos, doing Valentine's again this year. I think next year I'll have to do something different.

If it's your first doll, try a stock MDD! They're easiest to find clothes for compared to DDP and the different proportions to of the Mochi-Ashi legs. On the other hand, if your heart truly leans towards one size/shape over the others, maybe go for it! There are no wrong answers.

>Whats a good camera to start taking photos with?
This is highly dependent on budget, bells-and -whistles, and personal preference.
Budget would be a cellphone with tripod.
A several years old DSLR from Canon can be cheap quite too.
Most doll/photohraphy pros would go for a full frame Sony a7v. (Sony Alpha 7 V) or even a fancier Leica cameras. The rabbit hole is deep here.
A swivel touch screen is a nice thing on the camera for doll photos so you don't have bend as down low much.

>What's a good camera to start taking photos with
Like the other anon said, a phone camera will be fine for a great deal of people. If you're unsure about spending money, try shooting with your phone for a while to see how much you like those shots. If you find you still want more, you can buy an older model refurb dslr for a couple hundred, and that'll give you a taste for what it's like shooting with a real camera. If you stick with that for a while, you'll come to what you like and dislike about photography, and you can use that to help influence any future upgrades, being new lenses or new bodies. I just recently upgraded my old d3300 (which I bought used) to a new zf (both are Nikon camera) and it's been fun getting used to a new camera.
The hard truth is that you can take good and bad photos with any camera, so don't feel like you need to spend a lot of money in order to "get started" with photography. Something, something, the best camera is the one you have with you. I am also fairly new to taking photography seriously, so take all I say with a grain of salt.

I think it may have been in an /a/ radio thread, but I remember someone asking "do people really buy expensive DSLRs just to take photos of dolls" and the response being, "No, we buy the even more expensive latest top-of-the-line mirrorless cameras to take photos of dolls".I just joined that club recently.
But don't jump into that if you're just starting out; like others said your phone works fine and old used gear is a good starting place.
>>
>>50659532
I can say a friend of mine bought an expensive birding scope just to look at birds, at a comparable cost to an entry-level DSLR. Hobbies drive us to do things that others may find strange, but we're all having fun at the end of the day. (How are mirrorless cameras? I'm still using ye olde Pentax K1 and I have no idea what modern cameras are up to.)
>>
File: DSZ_0209 (2048).jpg (643.5 KB)

>>50659539
Yeah even my new gear pales in comparison to my birder friend's; there's always a bigger fish. But coming from a D3400, the change is pretty crazy. Full frame sensor size and megapixel count aside, the new functionality is a huge step up. I won't be just using this for dolls; I'll be shooting sports with it occasionally business purposes. All of the autofocus benefits that weren't possible with the DSLR PDAF are a good addition for that, plus video functionality which I do expect will be needed. Low light/high ISO performance is greatly improved. For shooting dolls, my most appreciated new features I have access to are focus peaking and having a histogram on the display just when framing up a shot. Focus shift and pixel shift shooting are neat, but require processing later to get benefits out of them. Focus shift seems particularly useful for dolls to cheat depth of field. Pixel shift, not so much since I don't think I'll be printing things big enough to make good use of the enhanced resolution. It does enhance color accuracy since each pixel on the final image gets all red/green/blue sensitive sensor pixel data, if I care about that.
Overall, probably about the same noticeable difference going from the consumer grade D3400 to a pro grade DSLR. Mirrorless adds fancy autofocus/video options.
>>
>>
quite frankly no one should start with a DSLR these days. used mirrorless cameras still run a bit higher than used DSLRs, but they're way easier for beginners to get into photography with now due to improvements to autofocus and other things. I'd only recommend a DSLR if you're literally completely broke, otherwise mirorless cameras are the way to go
>>
>>
>>
>>50659782
>For shooting dolls, my most appreciated new features I have access to are focus peaking and having a histogram on the display just when framing up a shot.
Sony NEX cameras had both of these 15 years ago. I think the specific model of camera is largely irrelevant for doll photos. They're incredibly still and patient subjects, after all.
>>
>>
>>
are we /p/ now?
Mirrorless is the future, don't get me wrong, but a DSLR is fine too if you're just starting out, especially if you're not going to be using the camera for anything but doll photos and don't know how to use a complex camera at all yet. Just don't invest too much in lenses or accessories as it is a dying format. In the mean time, if you're looking at getting one, you should invest in and learn to use a simple lighting set up too, don't worry they're cheap. Even if you're shooting outside, a reflector screen and knowing how to use one can transform your photos.

It depends on the type of clothes. Anything stretchy or loose-fitting like sweaters and so on will be no problem, but more form-fitting clothes might be tricky. I don't have an L-chest MDD, so hopefully someone else can weigh in? Probably still has more support than DDPs though.

I haven't found the motivation to take pictures of my dolls lately, but I did consider getting a dlsr because the optical viewfinder might make my typically low light setups a little less annoying. The amount of noise in the viewfinder for my current mirrorless in very low light makes setting up shots a little annoying and there were more than a few times when I scrapped maybe 20-30 minutes worth of pictures because they weren't focused how I wanted when I opened them in light room.
>>
>>
>>50664373
Blast the girls with a spare light when focusing, then turn off and go back to your normal scene lighting. This holds true with optical viewfinders too.

>I don't like how it covers cleavage and belly button
I don't like how they cover joint. Feels like lining the clothes is the more elegant solution, but it definitely takes more time than slipping on a sock.

Very cute pics! At this scale does the chicken count as a chocobo?
>>50666866
I don’t like the way it covers joints either (particularly how the material bunches up when you bend them), and it seems to restrict the movement. Not a fan of the zipper in the back either. Worth it if it prevented those stains though. I plan to take it off for clothes that reveal more skin, but I’m not sure how long it’ll last if I keep doing that.

It's the opposite for me, USPS is ol' reliable, UPS is usually okay, and FedEx once failed to deliver a live animal on time and required me to chase down the truck and meet in a parking lot to retrieve it. Other times they leave shit around my home like a scavenger hunt to find. It probably varies by location, but I hope you get your doll stuff soon anon! Be sure to show it off once you do!

Plenty of options. Mini Dollfie Dreams are smaller than regular Dollfie Dreams, but if you want something smaller than that, Tinyfox, Azone, and Parabox/Obitsu (as well as a bunch of resin creators like 2D-Doll and Aimerai) have options ranging from huge Dollfie Dreams (1/3-scale) to Barbie-sized Azone Pure Neemos (1/6-scale.) There are even smaller dolls, too -- Azone Picco Neemo, Nedoroid-sized Obitsu 11 dolls, and plenty of blind box dolls from somewhere like Jane's Doll Land that will fit in the palm of your hand. Check around, get a feel for what you want, and trust that whatever it is, there will be something in that range.

I have a lot of extra, unused closet space and attic space. I also put empty boxes inside of other empty boxes. I'll start to throw away old boxes if I get low on space. Small accessories go into under-bed plastic storage boxes.
The dollhouse luckily can be disassembled. But, I haven't thought of storage for it. Its way too big for the attic. And I don't want it to get chipped or exposed to summer heat.

I've been loving this channel lately. It's an old Japanese man making things for his dolls and taking them to trips around rural Japan. Lots of upcycling, low-budget, and vintage cameras. It's the kind of non-professional YouTube content I miss so much.

She's one of mine, so thank you for the excuse to post a family photo. It's been a while since I've done one and the family has grown a bit.
The tan girl is Masako. She's a custom imomo purchased at Otakon. The newest addition to the family along with Sachiko, the cat girl, though she actually belongs to my SO.
I think the other additions to the family since my last posting are Megumin, the unmodified character DD, and Aiyasu, DD-f3 2.0 body with custom head from YAJ whom graces the front cover of our beautiful calendars.
Of course Akari and Himari send their love to all on the board as always.

That's Hajime! She's a doll from Aimerai (I've kept her stock), who is probably my favourite doll maker. Unfortunately, I made the classic mistake of forgetting to grab my battery off the charger, so I couldn't use my camera to take any good pictures of her myself, so the phone will have to do.

I think they're 1/6 Azones or Obitsus; I have an Emilia and a Chizuru and am seriously considering starting a vehicle project for them. They're tough girls who have been through shit in the anime, so they can brush off real world physical bruises. But yeah if I had a 1/3 limited edition girl especially from a master faceup artist she'd be imprisoned in a premium display case.

I don't regret most but it was difficult to do a good looking faceup since you need to use a different palette for it. I didn't figure it out until seeing someone else's faceup and realized I probably shouldn't be using brown or black on purple or grey dolls if they're wearing a light colored wig since the color mismatch becomes a lot more pronounced versus it on pink and white dolls wearing lighter wigs.
The only ones I regret are tan dolls that are less tan and more orange since it looks really off. It would always look less orange in photos or was color matched to something that isn't that orange but in person it looks terrible. It looks like shit next to tan dolls that don't look like shit.
I hope that over the years it will become less orange due to red pigment being the most unstable and fades faster than other colors. This is just cope though.

I learnt my lesson after I had a fumo I was taking pictures of take a fall into a muddy river (I, too, jumped into the muddy river.) Luckily, it isn't super hard to make somewhat secure "safety harnesses" for dolls, but I just haven't got around to it yet. I'll admit, though, I was genuinely stressed the entire time she wasn't safely in her bag around this creek haha
>>50697728
Thanks! I don't have too much of an issue with what I carry so far. I've got the volks DD bag, which has more than enough space for 1 doll and any misc stuff I'll need for her. I carry that over the shoulder, and I can clip the tripod bag onto the hand strap to keep that out of the way too. I do need to buy a new camera bag, since my new camera is slightly too big for the one I currently have, but that can sit over the neck and any misc camera stuff can be tossed into the doll bag. I have plans to hit up a lot more of the trails nearby to me soon enough, so I'm sure I'll get a chance to really nail down my setup soon
>>50697724
>like flashes and soft boxes
I'm sure I'd run into the same issue if I started using additional lighting, which is one of the reasons why I don't want to start using them. I know they'd help out a lot for sure with how many times I end up going into the woods to take photos, however
>>50699796
Thank you so much! I usually throw the aperture all the way open (I paid for 1:1.4, I'm gonna use it all!!), but I tried to be a lot more conservative with it this time out. I'm still learning for sure, but I think I'm slowly getting somewhere

>Will Sora get a pendant like the others?
Of course, but I haven't found one yet. I looked at some charms at hobby lobby to make one myself, like I did for Eryna. They had one that I kinda liked, but the QA was shit so I passed. I've also been looking on Amazon, which is where I found Yuzuki's fox necklace, and there's one that I really like, but some reviews make me apprehensive (some say it's bigger than described, which is not good if I want to use it for a doll; and some others say the "stone" falls out of it easily, that it's just glued in), and it's like $65 which is a lot to spend on something that might not work out at all. I guess I could still order it and just return it if it's no good.

Thank you! The first time I posted her (a thread or two ago), I mentioned that she did have some issues with loose arm and elbow joints that just wanted to fall down when I raised them, so I did have a bit of difficulty getting her arm holding the bow to stay in that position. The torso and neck have a much greater posing range than the old body. I did buy some clear nail polish so I'll see about applying that to the elbows, and tightening the shoulder joints, in the future to see if it helps.

I actually bought a secondhand blind box doll to play with and pose with Ellie. She's a lot of fun to fiddle around with and I have to worry less about being gentle with her.
As an aside, do people have experience touching up Angel Philia or azone dolls with the obitsu frame? Ellie's legs have gotten a bit loose and if it's achievable, I'm interested in trying to tighten them up a little. Additionally, her head and neck has always had a bit of a tilt, which I assume to result from something to do with the neck peg. She came with these quirks to begin with - I bought her very used.

>Ellie's legs have gotten a bit loose and if it's achievable, I'm interested in trying to tighten them up a little.
which parts?
iirc the thigh bones are notorious for getting loose in their sockets, Elle's start to slide out whenever I bend her knees (due to her having thighs 0.5cm too short for the type H thighs by design — did you know that APs have a slight variance in height? fun fact)
>her head and neck has always had a bit of a tilt
probably the funky Obitsu head connector
pop her head cap off, pop her head off the neck peg, and loosen the screw up her neck socket just enough until you can shift her head back center on the ball joint
do the screw loosening in a safe place because if you unscrew it all the way, parts might go flying because there's a tension spring in there
for the same reason getting it all back together is a pain

Thanks for the response. Your girl is beautiful! I'll try fiddling with the neck peg. The specific issue is that her right knee comes out. The left leg doesn't really hold its pose well, but the leg/hip connector doesn't fall out. So although the latter point is a little frustrating, I mostly don't want her calf falling out while she's out for photos x.x

I don't know about angel philia or azone repairs. I believe the recommendation for loose or tight joints is to use the action figure joint tighten/loosen fluids.
I personally have tried to tighten dollfie dream joints with super glue with some success. The joint was only tighter slightly. And it can easily go wrong if you're not fast enough to separate the joints after dabbing the super glue on.

Can probably even go 5 if you find a 1/24 resin kit you can kitbash and put a camera on.
So in summary, 1/1, 1/3, 1/6, 1/12, 1/24

Today I learnt that staining is an issue in the short term after smudges appeared after being dressed for 2-3 hours. I had always assumed it was something to worry about in the long term....
It is just on her ass, so I'm not too bothered, all things considered. Until it gets delivered, she is now using a makeshift bodysuit that I fashioned out of old socks. It feels a bit rude to store her without clothes on...
