Keep this thread bumped and maybe I'll tell you when it's time to slide it to make way for the next Milley thread.
>>
I'm going to repost this in here

I'm 22 and I am thinking about joining the army. I'm thinking about infantry, combat engineer, or small arms repair. I'm open to your advice and opinions. schizo-kun need not answer, he won't change my mind.

>>64910872
I'm not considering the air force, it's not really what I want.
>>
>>64910912
Don’t join a combat role unless the US already has boots on the ground in large numbers somewhere before you join. Otherwise you’re just going to be sitting around hating your life.
>>
>>64910912
Between all three, I'd say combat engineer is going to give you the most bang for your buck out of the three. Small arms repair isn't as educational or rewarding as you think, infantry isn't doing diddlysquat, but combat engineer lets you tinker with some neat toys and build foundational knowledge that will lead to a well-paid professional path. Hell, you may even end up deciding that the famous Army Corps of Engineers is up your alley.
>>
>>64910923
>>64910925
>infantry isn't doing diddlysquat
I'm aware, my older brother was in and he didn't really enjoy it, but it just feels like the "classic experience" if you know what I mean. combat arms just speaks to me for some reason. combat engineer definitely seems like a better job, and small arms repair is just because I like guns and fixing them sounds fun.
>>
>>64910980
You wouldn't be doing as much "fixing" as you think, moreso cataloging and shipping. Gun repair is a neat industry, but the civilian routes would much better suit your interest and you can get into it at any age. As for infantry, trust me when I say that your interest in "the classic experience" will evaporate when you, as a combat engineer, dodge the bullshit they deal with because your job has more merit than theirs.

Best of luck and keep us updated as you go through next steps.
>>
>>64911026
>Best of luck and keep us updated as you go through next steps.
thanks, and I will. deep down I know engineer is the better choice, so I'll probably end up doing that.

For some reason, it tremendously upsets the one troll that keeps coming here. See, this troll has an odd obsession with being the one that posts the OP, and he typically picks a picture from /pol/ that aligns with his second-hand belief system. One common photo he used to use was an edited photo of General Milley wearing makeup, clearly with the intent of making him look like a tranny. For some reason, normal pictures of Milley make him extremely upset, and since they are completely on-topic, pictures of General Milley have been featured on most OPs lately.

It takes seconds of my effort to make the troll seethe for days.

Pretty good write up
As a side note though, stay away from WGU. The way they count their GPA is retarded, if you ever want to go to grad school or go officer their method of calculating GPA makes you much less competitive

>>
>>64910980
I’m in the same boat. I know it will probably suck, but I feel that I’d regret not doing it more than I would regret doing it and not enjoying it.
>>
>>64913340
I haven't heard about them.
Just make sure wherever you end up does 3 credit hours on a non-weighted 4.0 scale for regular courses. Pass/Fail and weight systems are weird because your credits carry "quality points" which calculate actual GPA. So it's 1 quality point for D, 2 for C, 3 for B, 4 for A, then you multiply it by credit hours to get a class's quality points.
A Pass/Fail class counts a pass as a 3 for quality points and a fail as 0. WGU is all pass/fail so the maximum GPA you can get from them is 3.0
Competitive for Officer is 3.2+ for STEM in the Air Force, and 3.8+ non-STEM, other branches it's 2.8+ STEM and 3.5+ non-STEM, and a master's program will be looking at internships as well as wanting above a 3.0 for STEM and 3.5+ non-STEM.

What are you, some drugged-up muscovite degenerate? No first world country is drafting any time soon.
>>
>>64913487
As far as you need to believe or care, yes. Is it true? That's the wrong question to ask. The real question is, why not enlist now?

>>64913816
It’s not that bad if you’re not fat/smelly, lazy, AND dumb. The hardest part generally is dealing with non-nukes professionally. Trying to explain to LS3 why I need my $250k microprocessor card at 0342 in port on a Thursday makes me want to pull my fucking hair out. Most of the navy are lazy wanna e gangsters. It gets really old fast. Weirdly, people who can’t and never even tried swimming join in droves. They bring the same non-euclydian thinking to the fleet with them

What war? I thought we went to war with Iran last year according to you
>>
>>64913239
>>64917087
As someone who has been trying to get past MEPS since fucking October last year, despite all the strange shit going on geopolitically I'm still enlisting.
I used to think I would never serve as a kid but the truth is the US military is the best in the fucking world bar none and our adversaries (Iran, Russia, China, Norks, Somalis, Houthis, ISIS, south american shitholes) are mentally retarded and ill-equipped.
The way I see my future, in the very likely chance I live through my service, there are two results:
>At worst, my enlistment turns into a deployment where I might see combat and make lots of money and contribute to wiping out hostile retards that hate me and my country for being better than them.
>At best, no war happens, I complete a glorified job program and extract the benefits post contract.
We're the only country besides maybe Australia where joining the military lends you several huge benefits and advantages over the rest of the population.
We are also the military with the most bases, most jobs, most branches, most specialized training programs, and the third most active duty personnel in the world.
Personally, enlisting is a risk that I'm willing to take because the reward outweighs the risk substantially.
That, and I feel like my civilian life is super boring and inescapable.
>>
>>64917764

planning on going into Army around 30 years old, maybe 31
that gives me 2 or 3 years to get fit and my shit squared away
what would be the best MOSs that might maybe have a chance to give me an advantage going in as an unc, to use the parlance of our times
>>
>>64918189
Why would you wait 2-3 years to enlist in the Army? Why not now?
And it's good that you want to get /fit/ before going to basic but basic isn't even that hard.
BCT is just a trial by fire and if you get there, you can most likely pass.

>>64918267
alright never mind then
I guess shit like 18x is just a meme
>>
>>64918381
No, 18X is not just a meme. But training 2-3 years in your late 20's/early 30's to prepare for basic training and SF selection is a bad plan.
The biggest reason is because SF selection includes 2 years of training in the pipeline.
The second biggest reason is, because unless you are a fat slob piece of shit, no normal human being needs to train 2 to 3 YEARS to finish basic training.
SF selection you can say is more rigorous because you need to meet a higher standard to begin with but even that is cope because you will be completing qual with 19-20 year olds who did not train 2 to 3 years prior to joining.

If you have never been to the gym, you should go. But it does not take 4 to 5 FUCKING. YEARS. to build enough endurance and strength to pass selection.
I've seen teenagers in highschool get noob gains in the gym in a year.
You are just lazy.
Lazy mindsets never get past anything hard so you will fail at basic training AND SF selection regardless of age, build, race, or any sliders you max out on your character creation.
Do not even bother joining any branch thinking like this. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
Throw your aspirations out of the window because if you delude yourself into procrastinating like this, you will surely procrastinate more when the deadline arrives.
Take a shit or get off the pot.
>>
>>64918381
in the OP there is a link to the current, official, SWCS-created fitness training guide for SFAS. you'll have to copy/paste it as the link includes spaces. use that, it tells you exactly what to do and how to train in order to succeed.
>>
>>64918560
yeah, still 50lbs over weight and with a pretty sedentary lifestyle up until recently
just now got the money to afford things like the gym
mostly bodweight exercises and running until then but still near close to a benchmark cardio wise that you should be near when going for that sort of thing
2 years is just the max estimation of readiness
>>
>>64919033

>>
>>64910702

>>
>>64919033
I just met a guy who cut 30lbs in 4 momths to get past MEPS.
Eat less carbs. Learn how to cut calories where it matters.
The biggest problem is processed food.
You biggest focus otherwise should be running and exercising with good form.
Start a running program and work out other parts of the body on your non running days.
50lbs is a lot, you need to put out a consistent effort every day to shrink that.
>pro tip it will be easier if someone else is aware of you and is keeping you accountable on your progress

>How difficult is Airforce Special Warfare training
David Goggins attempted Air Force PJ training, Navy SEAL training, and Army Ranger school. David passed all of those except PJ school.

But, he only failed PJ school because he was medically removed.

That being said, Air Force Special Warfare is very hard, and arguably just as hard as the SEAL pipeline depending on what AF SW path you’re talking about.

Evenin', gentelmen. 92gfag here. I keep getting harassed by reserve recruiters, as when I was on my way out of AD, I almost got conned into it.

Anyway, since I have had a year to recover from the trauma I endured during my time in :^), the offerings they're sending me look kinda cool, and was pondering getting into the reserves and possibly going back active if i dont totally hate it as an officer if for no other reason than an even earlier retirement, and more milking of education bennies.

What are these mos's like when at AIT and actually doing your job?

Second question: Some "special agent" is bothering me about setting up and interview about setting up a virtual meeting about my security clearance? Can I just ignore this if I don't go back in?

The Iran thing is the best thing that could happen if you are looking to join because it will test your resolve. If you are a recruit right now atleast you know there's some fucked shit going on that could mean boots on the ground.
It could be so much worse. There were people who were in boot camp during the start of vietnam, 9/11 and covid who had no fucking idea what was happening in the outside world, then they got to their duty station/tech school and realized the world was going batshit crazy.
>>
>>64923023
It won't be the most morally correct war, it will be akin to Iraq or Afghanistan. Good intentions but in the end, we will leave behind a backwards mess.
It kinda is what it is. Join if you want, but understand that another middle east forever war isn't entirely ruled out.

I did 4 mostly during peacetime. Call me a pussy call me whatever, but I saw my dad come home fucked up after Afghanistan. He didn't lose any limbs but pretty sure he had some minor brain stuff that affected his motor skills. Never saw him visibly age until that deployment. He went to Iraq too and just guarded a prison, just to give you an idea of how much deployments can vary.

It's something you should think about. The risks are there and shouldn't be underestimated. This isn't an attempt to demoralize anyone, just the reality that war should not be romanticized.
