-=READ THE GUIDES=-
Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!
For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!
For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!
And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-
Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

This is the first one I've built. I'm not super sure what you're trying to ask but OOB the things see to be molded in 2 or 3 colors roughly corresponding to the final color that the area's supposed to be (for example, inner frame sections of the Knight of Gold were molded in a reddish-brown while the armor came in a matte gold). If you're going for manga color scheme accuracy your idea sounds like it'd work well, I haven't gotten to its first appearance yet in the manga but from what I can tell it's supposed to be a deep glossy navy blue with a gray inner frame and yellow eyes and eye imagery around the body.

The standard cement only works on PS, it can somewhat works as an adhesive glue, but doesn't provide a strong bond since it doesn't melt ABS that effectively. ABS cement is what you are looking for, but the cure time is very long.

And there goes my lunch money. At least this guarantees that I'll have one for the Turn X when I finally manage to snag a reprint, since the official P-Bandai ones are designed to fit only the Turn A and I would have to do some workshopping to make it fit.

I finished the MG The-O I wip posted a week or two ago. It was for a local hobby store's competition and I got 4th and the people's choice award where passersby would vote on their favorite. I've never spent so much time on a kit and its the biggest kit I worked on.
I did pink primer -> orange preshading -> almost-white yellow post shading for the body. Alclad gloss black -> Gaianotes Star Bright Iron for the armor. Alclad gloss black -> Gaianotes gold something -> Mr Color gx clear red for the red. Alclad gloss black -> Mr Color pearl crystalline something green for the green parts. I also have two coin batteries inside the ass that connect to the front skirts and monoeye, I'm proud of that cause the LEDs are entirely contained within the kit instead of having wires sticking out. I made a lot of mistakes that could've otherwise gotten me a higher score but this is my current opus in the hobby so I'm happy

Here it is in more normal lighting with LEDs on. The mistakes I made are as follows: Preshading intensity is inconsistent in some parts (right vs left forearm), some parts arent fit as much as they can be (feet, backpack to body, the two body parts that you sandwich), some scribed lines arent as deep as they should be, making the panel liner clean up take away some of the paint when it shouldn't be doing that, and last is a personal flaw I noticed in hindsight and its that the thrusters actually need to be green inside for anime accuracy. I wanted to do some Plamo's Atelier level of weathering too but I ran out of time before submission. If I'm motivated enough in the following weeks I'll retouch on these mistakes and post the kit again. A year of thesis almost made me forget that I loved this hobby

Why didn't you color correct these parts?
>>
>>23760446
It's dumb but I didn't refer to any anime screenshot for reference, so when painting it I didn't see anything wrong. I only saw those mistakes after submission, I'll retouch them eventually... probably
>>23760442
Thank you, maybe I'll retouch it if there's a future competition where I could enter it in. I did a Kampfer for the same local hobby store's competition two years ago, then re-entered it in a different competition where I won a HG Xi, still my favorite HG to this day cause of the memories.
>>23760443
Sorry for yapping but I did want to make the yellow as close to the anime as possible. I tried white primer, grey primer, and different mixes of yellow but I couldn't get it right. When I did pink primer it kind of forced the CAT yellow no matter what mixture of yellow I used so I just accepted it. I liked it, but it wasn't really anime accurate

Does anyone have a triangular scraper for mold lines? I'm working on a AC kit and im sick of this mold line shit. I scrape it with a hobby knife and lightly sand but when primed the area has a gorge in it for some reason. Would a triangular scraper fix this?

I make an X with one line being the mold line and the other being the knife, then I scrape it until the line seems to be gone, then I sand it with 1000 grit. Its specifically a problem for small mold lines. Here's an example of the gouging. It happened on 2/4 of these parts. 30MM Melander's legs
>>
>>23760511
Oh and to answer why I think it wont gouge with a scraper, maybe the tool is designed somehow to work better in removing mold lines? Cause I did some googling and warhammer's citadel has a tool for mold line removal too, so I wondered why dont those guys just use xacto knives? Im also not buying that citadel tool cause warhammer crap costs 4x the price of gunpla stuff. The Stedi tungsten triangular thing is what I'm eyeing instead

>>

>>23760512
I'm not sure what you mean since it's the V2. Do you mean easy to disassemble into the Top/Bottom rims or parts wise.
Yes for it's normal splitting (it's 4 clips holding it together). For parts, the armor seems come off reasonably. It's a bit tighter than I remember from the non-coated it as it's kinda painted. It has made all the joint/ABS parts have a nice tightness.

No, as in, disassemble the kit entirely. I plan on working on my own MG V2AB as soon as I finish this current painting project and I can't decide if I'll do a quick snap fit first or just remove every single part from the runner and then immediately do the prep work after.

Did a quick test on 30MM AC back weapon hinge.
Seems to be doing a pretty good job as long as you aren't being a caveman with it.
>>
>>23760342
Yeah, that's to be expected from a show that mostly consisted of "Hey remember this guy that died in OYW? This is what they'd be doing this episode if they were alive! They're dead now! Next Episode!" and then ended with Magical Girl Char and Lalah fan fiction
>>
>>23760631
Not really, they seem to be holding fine outside of that weird connection issue I mentioned last thread. Like I said though, it's essentially top coated already, so they are tighter than normal.
There is very little frame exposed outside of the hands, I would just not worry about disassembling that more than needed to remove the armor. Especially if you are a "Clear coat after assembly' person like I am even with painted kits.

Overall, better than I expected, which was absolute bare bones minimum. I can forgive the lack of perfect transformation, since it should still include the original forearm if it continues to use the same runners from the previous kits.

So I was wrong, there is like one specific rear skirt underpiece that they didn't include in the retail kit, which is still P-Bandai exclusive. But the number of missing pieces needed to make a retail Enhanced ZZ went down from three to one, and the two added pieces (the Hyper Beam Saber undersheaths) are the important ones since you can just use the FAZZ rear skirt as a substitute.
Also, here are the new wing shield pieces that let you attach the wing shields to the FAZZ forearm.

You were (mostly) crazy, because it basically does have the whole thing except for a single piece. Hell, the FAZZ already had 90% of the Enhanced ZZ parts, it just excluded the beam saber undersheathes because the FAZZ has an entirely different backpack anyhow.
Despite all my complaining, you can still recreate 99.9% of an authentic Enhanced ZZ, it's literally just that back skirt piece which is barely even noticeable.

Not him, I was reading through schizo's review and it looks like bandai omitted some of the ZZ Gundam's runners which prevents you from building the zz. Which is not related to the conversation you two are having I'll admit. Just something interesting I read.
>>
>>
>>23760920
I believe the lack of small parts can be much more frustrating than barely having a skeleton. They psychologically conditioning the customers into buying the Pbandai one because obviously the retail one is just " Full Armor ZZ", not 2 robots in 1 package.

>>
>>
>>23760923
Comparing the runners from >>23760879 to Dalong, it looks like they just excluded the parts needed to build the un-Enhanced ZZ. Which is fair, I guess. If you want a regular ZZ, the retail kit already exists for that.

Assault Equipment all done. Not sure if I hate the shoulders and their ridiculously tight attachment (basically has an ABS spring that you have to rotate the existing shoulder in and took 30 min ish), or the knees with their ridiculously loose attachment (you pull a part half off to slip them in between).
Looks pretty good though. I accidentally scratched one of the stickers on the shield's I field emitters so I'm going to need to take out those clear parts and paint them.

Do you have idea how profitable Pbandai is? Retail is pure speculation, they get shelf warmer humiliation when they made too much and things don't sell. However, Pbandai has specific metric due to the way it works, preventing Bandai from over producing. What if FA ZZ fans don't give a flying fuck about EZZ? >Jeez us EZZ enthusiasts wish there is a standalone and completed EZZ because there is no way we are gonna buy that expensive piece of shit

The premade parts don't actually transforms though, Zeta's original parts do. However, the advanced ms joints have terrible fitment since KPS parts just can't graft onto them at all. When you transform RG Zeta, the robot moves alot, causing the armor to fall off like autumn leaves.
>>
>>23761125

the MS joints are vital to the transformation of the legs, torso and waist. they simply would not be as strong if assembled from individual pieces, as it is pushing the limit of what can be done at that scale.

If you think Advanced MS Joint is strong and some sort of unicorn magic trick then you are a moron. Literally every RG from 2010 to 2017 were made with that trash because 1/144 innerframe seem like a difficult thing back then. RG Zeta doesn't need it if Bandai decide to make a 2.0 all of sudden.

this is exactly what it is.
it allows joints to be smaller by not requiring them to be designed to be assembled, via clamshell enclosure, peg or c-clip.

Brother in christ, you need big, thick joints in order to have strength. Most of old RG are pathetically weak because they have a literall stick figure inside and RG Zeta is notoriously the weakest one in the bunch.
>Muh 1/144 scale can't hanle it
Bandai never give that much fuck. They upscale stuff all the time.

>Brother in christ, you need big, thick joints in order to have strength
you read the first three words of what I post, then then your brain shorts out and you shit your pants.
the joints have to be as small as possible to make a fully transforming zeta work in 1/144. they can only be made that small and still function by being advanced MS joints. it is one of the most iconic designs in the franchise, and people would immediately notice if it was slightly too large.
>>23761165
it is 100% required to make the zeta work at 1/144 without partsforming.
>>23761070
the ZZ transformation is actually incredibly simple relative to zeta and would be fairly easy to pull off. no hinged hips and much less complex transformation in the torso.

I mean, yeah? It's basically just combining runners from the ZZ, Enhanced ZZ upgrade package, and FAZZ, and throwing in four new runners for color correction and being able to attach the armor and wing shields to the arms without having to replace the arms entirely. There are so many moving parts that just having everything molded in the right color is worth the new purchase, since painting a ZZ+FAZZ kitbash would result in a shitload of scratched surfaces.
And it's not like the MG ZZ or FAZZ are old kits either, both are each less than a decade old apiece. This is nothing like the MG Ex-S recycling 80% of old-ass 2002 and 2003 kits, or the 2022 MG Dom kits having massive commonality with the 1999 Dom kits.

Different anon, but remember that the real cost of Gunpla is in the molds, not the plastic (even the "high quality" shit that Bandai uses). They're fine with putting more plastic in a kit if it means they don't have to make new molds, that's why a monstrosity like the MG Sinanju Stein Narrative Ver. Ka contains so many leftover parts from the previous three iterations of the MG Sinanju (Red Sinanju Ver. Ka and OVA, White Sinanju, and Zoltan's White Sinanju).

You are almost right, however it is not that easy. Every new parts need new mold, either by modifying the existing 3D model or making standalone ones for them. It has never been a problem for a billion dollar corpo like Bandai because ultimately, it is us the consummers to pay the price for these recycling.

Thanks, in person it's easier to see flaws. Besides the shortcomings I mentioned, I also didn't really get high in the customization criteria, which is fair cause my work is pretty much OOB besides the scribed lines and a few pla plate details. Without trying to doxx myself or other contestants, here are the top 3. 1st, AOZ 2nd, Leotank 3rd. The Exia was excellently scribed, masked, etc. The AOZ was amazing all around and man I love AOZ kits, it was also one of the few with weathering. The Leotank has fucking RC truck components on it, it's a fully working RC and it's got magnetic hotswappable components, for example the guns are connected with magnets and can be swapped with the cannons etc. Iirc the 3 criterias are basics (nub marks, molds, seam lines, etc), creativity, and customization. So even if you have an amazing idea, you gotta execute it well, and even if you got those two down, if the idea and execution doesn't have much custom parts or kitbashed pieces, it'll get a lower score in customization, etc.

It is fine to quickly review a kit without painting, but don't treat it as some sort of professional critism or some shit like Gayfagsu does. When you review a car in professional manner, people expect you to know how to ride a car.
>>
>>23762285
Painting is a major part of the hobby and a learned skill that takes effort and time to perfect. If you aren't at least trying to paint it's just collecting. I don't really care what a toy collector has to say about a kit. The engineering in gunpla is interesting but, barring something catastrophic with a kits construction what is there to talk about? There is no individuality, no nuance, no skill involved since the kits are pretty much Legos at this point.

I painted most of my Bandai/Kotobukiya models with brush but I completely understand why some people would like to use airbrush instead - it's mostly matter of scale, bigger models are simply more convenient to paint with airbrush and large flat areas are simply easier to highlight that way. Even without airbrush I was using sponge to highlight certain areas since doing so with brush is more time consuming and much harder to achieve smooth transitions. Most successful painters uses both normal brushes and airbrushes complementary.

AAAAAIIIIIEEEEEEE
What's the weakest kind of thinner to erase Stedi's water-based panel liner without erasing lacquer paint surface?
>just use water
It can't erase well enough.

Takes a little time to catch it but it's not that hard once you get it, later is matter of practice. Generally you paint with darker shade first as a base, then gradually go up whole spraying from direction of light. Finally it's good idea to load even darker shade or mix and spray from the bottom, of course thinned down.
Of course, Gunpla and similar models of their size benefits less from this than, say, miniatures (you can easily find people arguing that they don't need it at all) but you can find this being demonstrated on various miniature painting videos where authors use both brush and paintbrush. Angel Giraldez or Jose Davinci are good examples from YT, H&S have few good videos demonstrating painting with airbrush including shadows.
>>
>>23762833
But with regular sized high grades specifically, are the parts too small to do this with an airbrush? I've done shadows on a hg the O, but he's big and has plenty of wide armor panels which made it easy.
>>
>>
>>23762845
That's why I said practice matters - how much paint you release at once, how close you spray and so on. Doing pinpoint smooth shadows is very doable but you need to practice first. Nothing stops you from combining it with oil washes, too.

>>
>>
>>23762823
I wonder if we'll get a MG of it eventually100% likely P-Bandaisince it's mostly just a kitbash of the Nu, Gundam Mk. 2, and Alex. It could use the Alex 2.0 frame with a new armor molding and weapon parts from the Nu and a Mk. II

What are the alternatives to Gaianotes Surfacer and Mr Surfacer 1200/1500 in Canada because this country is a shithole that doesn't restock Gaianotes despite the burgers having it in their retailers and the government banned Mr Color products?

If you watch professional model and prop makers, they use all brands and types of paint. But /gpg needs special formulated paint from holy Nippon, extracted from the tears their fav waifu, cried when her flower got taken, or they cannot color on their toy robots.

It can be but it's sold out - but it's more likely to be restocked. Do you know if it's acrylic or lacquer based?

Professional modelers won't use random rattlecan shit off the shelf, they'll use primers actually made for plamo and miniatures... like tamiya and mr. surfacer. And most likely airbrushed instead of from a can. This is because they're objectively better and more retard-proof primers for smaller things like model kits that go on lighter and easily capture more detail, instead of having to jump through 2 billion hoops to make shitty outdoor brand rattlecans work.
>>
>>
>>23763016
>retard-proof
making the ink for airbrush was easier that for brush. results was also better.
i might just invest in a lot of maskig material and tools to compensate. all im worried with is i cant really airbrush details

Americans are not used to having to scrounge and forage for supplies. The reason the tariff shit causes such seethe is because it interferes with the average American's ability to have anything on the planet delivered to his doorstep in two weeks or less.

You can mask most things if you need to, but it's also totally possible to handpaint details. Stock up on some extra gloss coat and lay one down after you're finished with your main airbrushing paintjob and you shouldn't have any issues using normal enamel/acrylic paint atop it.

Nice to hear. Now it's time to apply some markings/decals before moving towards subtle weathering and finally varnish.
I cannot decide on what to use, however. Have a lots of decals from Wh40k so maybe Salamanders symbol on one shoulder and Hojo Clan Mon on another since he uses their Clan colors. But no idea about the rest, like on shield. Have some Tau ones too but no idea what they mean. Something needs to go on the shield since it's quite empty.

From what other box openings have shown, it isn't the absolute worst shit that Bandai could have done. They do actually package a bunch of individual and independent P-Bandai kits, it's not something stupid like a bunch of upgrade packages without the original kits, but it's also not the most optimal thing like including original kits plus the upgrade packages.
>>23763256
I think they just take their stock of unsold Gundam Base exclusive kits and put them on the website to sell overseas. And yeah, some people do like this Clear Color or Special Coating or Mechanical Core Plating or Cross Contrast Colors stuff. There are also people that explicitly buy the Clear Color kits and just paint over them, because it's still faster and easier than waiting for a reprint of the regular kit (e.g. a RG 00 Qan[T] Full Saber, which I don't think I've ever seen on the US P-Bandai store).

If you're really desperate you can also get other shipping companies to ship it to you. I used ShipByMail to get a tea set to my house by rerouting it from Buyee when Buyee wouldn't ship it to me directly.
It'd probably jack up the cost though, but the option's there.

Started building gunpla for the first time in January, I've only done HGs so far (Unicorn NT-D, Nu, V2AB, Zeta revival and base V2) and it's been really fun, I'll try out hand painting with acrylics soon using some cheaper kits eventually
