-=READ THE GUIDES=-
Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!
For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!
For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!
And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.
>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-
Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Why would anyone buy this for $787?
You could easily paint this color and if you're a snapfag, Daban's is like 1/20 the price.

To be perfectly honest, not really, at least not Baselard. The armor is so top heavy and unwieldy that it's a pain in the ass to move and pose even with the stand and it's already kind of floppy so I'll never use the armor bits. I don't regret getting her because having a 1/6 cute poseable bunny girl is pretty neat and once they release a dress up body S I can get clothes for her, but it's a hard recommend, even if I had fun building her. The other Grande Scale girls with less spread armaments might be a better final experience, but I only like Baselard so I'll never know for sure. If they release "light armor" versions, you could hop on that if you're interested

Finally scratchbuilt ankle joints for the feet for all axis movement, plus some pretty powerful magnets in the toes for stability. The red primer is a little orange peel-ish but hopefully will smooth out when I wipe it down with mineral spirits.
Still lots to do on the legs, hips and belly, but it's coming together nicely.

have a question, if you're building something that has a part you build, say, 8 times from two identical runners, but each runner has 5 (sets) of the piece/s you need, do you use 5 from one and three from the other, 4 from each or do you just build all ten?

I'm a big fan of the Mk1 because it's a big stupid boxy war crime. I dunno. It's kind of tempting, but I already have a MK1. While I enjoyed the kit and have wanted to get a second to maybe try my hand a paint job, painting a special injection version would be silly.
>>
>>23763881
it's not even special
it's just the bog standard coating, but applied to the interior side instead of both, and using yellow plastic instead of clear.
only thing I think could make it actually that expensive is if they are hand cleaning the overspray from the clear side.

NTA but i have built a handful of those old 1/100 nonscale F91 kits ( Hardygun, G Cannon ) and they feel like early 2000s HG. Most of people definitely experienced that old engineering and it is not that scary. Bad assembly experience mostly come from weird bad ideas that Bandai used in the past.

Very high, all the work with the Gundam Frame has already been done so we'll also see Lupus Rex, Gusion Rebake, Gusion Rebake Full City, Flauros, Kimaris, Kimaris Trooper and Kimaris Vidar at the very least. Very likely also Marchosias, Hajiroboshi and Astaroth, but as P-Bandai.

Base paint is done on the bootleg mk-iii. It's pretty good. There's some parts that need a bit of excessive force to put together but they're all localized to the chest. It really was just the two chest parts and getting the backpack on. The bootleg plastic also seems to resist paint sticking and smelled kinda funny when I sanded it. No amount of sanding or cleaning seemed to help the adhesion. It's strange stuff. I eventually realized that it was resisting the lacquer based primer I was using but didn't seem to mind regular aqueous paint. I do not understand it.
The color scheme is based on the test unit but I added a darker chest and a yellow crest to make it feel more like a gundam.
>>23764064
Kimaris vidar would be cool
>>
>>23763985
>Definitely dated, though
Huh? I mean yeah the kit is older but it's also (asking with the even older Zaku 2 2.0) one of the best engineered MG kits ever. I feel like this kit could have been released last year and be as good or better than most mgs that came out in the last 5 years. In what way is it dated besides actually just being old?

I'm going to but it just pisses me off. The whole thing where they quietly limited your ability to cancel pre-orders just as shipping skyrocketed was super shady. Memes aside, I've not had an issue. They usually throw a sticker in the order, though its not always consistent. Might just be a while supplies last. I think the two I have are a psycho mk2 and tequilla gundam. They often have 10-15% off sales and usually have an item of the day sale for like 30-50%.that's being said, their prices are pretty standard with some ups and downs, and shipping is $10, so factor that into it as well. Can't say I've had a negative experience, and my friend even had a kotobukiya part replaced through them, so I have second hand great experience.

48 hours is long enough.
there's this one spot where paint just won't stick well
Before, grey primer turned white after it dried, had to prime it more, and then when I painted it red, this spot's red ended up lighter than the rest of the part, so I had to paint it more. just for this spot.
I don't know what caused this. is it because I didn't wash my parts?
>10 years old red Bandai gunpla
maybe that's why? but other parts don't have this problem, only this one particular spot for some reason

The only problem is if you pre-order something from them, and one or more of the items in that order gets delayed. They'll only ship an order once everything in that order is ready (duh), so even if you bought something that they have in stock at the moment that you placed the order, you'll still have to wait if your order includes something that they don't get for another six months, and then if that item gets delayed another six months you end up waiting a full year for your order.
Overall they're pretty great, and as the other anon said they quite regularly have 15% off sitewide sales, sometimes 20% off for the special holidays. If you never pre-order from them you'll always get your stuff pretty quickly, and even if you do pre-order and something gets delayed you can e-mail their support to check on the status of the order, and one time I even had them immediately ship the parts of the order that were ready since only one item was delayed. As everyone has already said, the problem only comes when you pre-order from them, because their pre-order stuff tends to get delayed more often than not.
>>
>>23764679
it's the old-ass NG 1/144 kit from the 90's, so yes, it sucks terribly. I've built it before, and while it was better than the other NG 1/144 kits of its time, it does not hold a candle to modern HG kits. The only reason they sell it is because it's literally the only way to get an official Devil Gundam kit.
>>
>>23764695
I encountered a similar issue recently with lacquer primer not wanting to stick to questionable plastic. I didn't have adhesion issues with a less hot paint direct on plastic for some reason.
I suggest sanding it, cleaning it and trying aqueous paint instead. I have no idea why that worked for me.
>>
>>23764700
the grey primer sticked, but it turned white after a while for a mysterious reason. you can see here >>23764687 the red paint peeled off, but the primer didn't.

I think you misunderstand. the zaku had considerable screen time throughout the whole show, with the most popular antagonist in the history of all japanese media piloting one himself.
sales of grunts fell off in the 90s, which they corrected by switching the main cast to have multiple gundams, which drove sales of kits up significantly.

Absolutely delusional. The real answer is that bad guy suits require engineering work and can't be copy pasted like 80% of the protag kits. You'll buy whatever they pump out so why would they do more work?

>sales of grunts fell off in the 90s, which they corrected by switching the main cast to have multiple gundams, which drove sales of kits up significantly
You mean sales rose on protag suits when the leadership shifted to AU boy band protagonists with multiple gundams trying to appeal to girls and putting zero effort into the bad guy suits. Prior to that both sides had awesome designs. Strangely enough, when uc made a comeback all of the antagonist suits sold well again.

at least that one comes with parts molded in blue plastic
I have the hikaru battroid one and it is a really good kit, max factory really nailed the anime accuracy to a t in the battroids, which I think look much better than hasegawa's renditions which have a much more stiff mechanical look
however, they come molded entirely in white plastic so you can guess the chore it is to try to make them look like in the series
that max one and the 1D in trainer colors are better picks simply because they are molded in various colors and you only need a bit of paint and apply the decals for onscreen accuracy
once assembled they are about 20cm tall, like an average MG, just don't expect crazy articulation, it is pretty basic and these kits still use polycaps

In lore reason is because it is their state of the art bits and pieces thrown together
Design reason is because the original mechanical designer really likes overly detailed, super bulky mecha, and apparently also likes to put a little overhanging spike on top of the heads of some mecha like in pic related and the Penelope

I figured it out, it actually wasn't the nozzle, seems like because I treat it like garbage there was a buildup of paint in what I guess you call the fluid channel, I disassembled it, soaked it in a fairly strong degreaser and was able to pass a bore brush through it and now it's good.

I’ve looked at a lot of the Chinese kits and the design language just doesn’t really appeal to me at all sadly

I hope the MG version of this gets announced soon. I can see Bandai make that specific Nu MP Type Gundam with some of the armaments from the Alyzeus as the only Hathaway MG kit we'll get and they'll ignore the Xi and Penelope just like the time they only made the AGE Magnum from Build Divers in MG and ignored the rest, not even the 00 Diver got a MG kit.

>>23765264
>the constant Nu/Strike Freedom allusion is annoying as fuck
I can't agree more. With Nu being probably the best iteration (probably just because it was the original and novel at the time), but ever since it has been a constant iteration of it. The contrarians in here, and all the other seed kiddies will tell you how much personality all of these freestrike suits have but they are completely derivative. I'm old as hell, I saw cca when it was new and it's always a let down when half of the series feature suits that look like Nu with shit stuck on it. There are of course exceptions that are interesting, and thankfully they finally broke free of relying on the nu archetype it seems. I wish the shows were better. Especially with seed/destiny they really started just cashing in on having 10 variants of the same nu-type suit in each series and making the enemy faction a bunch of faceless mooks. So boring.

The actual baby step into modeling would be Tamiya kits since they quite children friendly without handholding them too hard. Gunpla is just a weird offshoot of scale model hobby, you can treat them as assembly toys and most of them would still look passable, unlike the traditional scale model that look like a monochromatic blob if you don't paint.

Not him but it's basically the modern equivalent of reel modeller kits but with a lot of QOL fixes and tolerances, much better than tanks/cars but only slightly worse than older koto. Bandai > Koto > Volks > Tanks/Cars. Not near Bandai levels of quality yet but it's manageable. When in doubt just glue shit together. Haven't tried GSC kits or Our Treausre (junchoon) yet because they're sitting in my boxwall.
>>
>>
>>23765791
Pretty much agreed on all counts. The mold quality is pretty mid and requires a lot of sanding to fix. The kits require glue to complete at all. It's kind of amusing that they advertise as being able to be straight built, but you absolutely need to paint these if you're going to attempt the volks kits.

I don't think I'm ever gonna be able to go back to being a snapfag after this. Seeing this thing start to come together is hitting like crack

What do you mean? I thought it looked good... I waited 12 hours for it to cure and stuff before handling it

Anon just because you are a snapshitter and too broke to afford RG Nu, that does not mean RG Nu and the gorillon amount of the same boring looking Gundams don't exist.

>a really tiny piece of fur on another
Why do these things always appear all of a sudden right as I spray my clear coat?

It's a very different experience. This thing requires a lot of glue and doesn't move very much. The pegs and slots are mostly just reference points so that the parts are lines up correctly when you glue them. It's also incredibly color inaccurate out of box and includes a paint guide to follow as you go.
Overall, I wouldn't say it's any harder than building a gundam.

Are you saying the zock doesn't exist?

Friendly reminder that Gcucks introduced a gundamized Zock. No matter how quirky or chunker your precious robot is, they will take that away.

I just top coated my kit with this (1 layer) and I already used up around half the bottle.
The consumption rate seems to be faster than normal paint. or is it just me? meanwhile my surfacer seems to never run out.
Do you guys do 2-3 layers of top coat. people on other forums said I should, but that'd be an entire bottle.

thinned 1 paint : 2 thinner
I'm sure I sprayed it less than I usually did with colored paint..
all right after I looked at it again, maybe not half the bottle...

Weird to think it's gonna be a weird stick figure dude when it's done. It's really growing on me.

Working on painting a model for the first time. An HG Zudah. I have the pieces all cut out and sanded. Snapped it together and then took it apart. So the next step is to
>glue certain parts together? But then won't the paint get stuck in the polycaps?
>leave it apart?
>then prime the pieces or partial assemblies with Mr Surfacer?
>sand down/putty any flaws I notice after priming?
>then spraypaint (I don't have an airbrush yet, but I don't wanna weather it so eh)
>then decals/lines
>then topcoat
I've only snapped stuff together previously so idk. Mostly unsure on how to approach the painting

Glue is wholly unnecessary. What you want to do is:
1. Sand/file all nubs to smoothness
2. Circumcise the pegs for easier future disassembly
3. Mask off surfaces that come in contact with each other and/or joints
4. Prime
5. Mask and paint to account for color correction
6. Top coat
7. Assemble

>RG Force Impulse and Spec II are out of stock literally everywhere
>the Chinesium knockoff costs more than official kits for some fucking reason
Someone want to fill me in here? I thought Seed shit was never supposed to go out of stock because of how much money they print.

Huh, now that I actually read the description on these things, that actually makes sense. But how is it that of the various RG knockoffs that the Chinese have made, the Impulse series have to have the metal frame which then jacks up the price so much? I would think that with how popular Seed slop is in China, a low-cost RG Impulse would be top priority, yet it doesn't seem to exist.
Also, I just checked outside my usual circles and the regular RG Force Impulse does seem to be in stock in some places, but USAGS (where I have a gift card I could use) has been out for months. Irritates me so much.

you're thinking too much of complex stuff
when you're just starting, you just have to do it and make errors on many stuff.
get used to thinning paint
get used to airbrushing
that's it. everything else is secondary.

It's only been one week since it was released and it's getting a bootleg already.
Bet they're going to make the Spec 2 before Bandai does too.

Alright, project finished. Now it needs photo session but here are few quick phone snaps.
In retrospection, I should use some smaller and lighter backpack since now he is quite unstable and 30MM solution of soft ball joints for legs is not helping. Of course there is always stand option but still.
Still needs a name, however.

Can this thing actually stand on its own? People say this is the peak of Chang kits but it has no metal parts to support that backpack.

Why are Japanese modelers like Savoryman, fullpla factory, crafta, plaban praising Nu gundam as masterpiece,
while Korean modelers like dalong, gundamholic and plasmith are vocal and unhappy about Nu gundam's waist and consider it as cursed object like Giant RG sinanju and Giant Tristan?
Why do Japanese modellers not give a shit about waist bend?
