Hello hello! It’s that time again, time for another GameJam!
In case you’re not aware. We’ve been doing Game Jams every 4 months or so, mainly at the board cons.
Why at (board) cons? Well, to showcase them of course, the games will be played LIVE with an audience at the last day of the con. Current time is Sunday 29th of March 5 PM EST, check the anchor in case the time changes.
If you’re interested in participating by submitting a game, please go to https://itch.io/jam/mlp-marecon-game-jam-horror-and-edge and join! Please don’t hesitate in doing so, having an initial number of interested people helps me calculate the time I’ll need for the panel. If you for some reason don’t wanna make an itch account, you can email me the game at the mail at the end of the post
Now, for the theme. Last time we did a restrictive one (which you can check out over here »42778618). This time we’re going for a more thematic one: Horror and edge. Does this mean you HAVE to make horror games? I don’t know, that’s for you to interpret.
You wanna make fun of the early fandom edginess? Go ahead
Wanna make a rainbow factory adventure game? Be my guest
Want to experience the daily horrors ponies have to endure on their every day lives (aka: running out of sugar)? By all means
The theme is for you to interpret and play around with.
So, to recap:
Theme: Horror/Edginess
Stream time: Sunday 29th of March 5 PM EST
Jam link: https://itch.io/jam/mlp-marecon-game-jam-horror-and-edge
Mail: littlehorseappreciator@proton.me
Please refer to the anchor for any announcements, updates in scheduling or any other important information.

FAQ:
>When's the Jam running?
As of now, from February 28th to March 26th, one day before the con starts. Thread has been created beforehand for visibility
>Why give a whole month?
We all have busy lives, I don’t expect you to work on your games for a whole month, just to make one in the given time frame.
>I’m a newcomer to gamedev and/or I don’t think my game will be very good :(
You’re among pone frens, we’ve had plenty of people dipping their toes into game making in the past in these jams. In my humble opinion, I think these jams are the best way to get started and/or get some practice. If not now, then when? The more pony games, the better!
>I don’t I’ll make use of the full month to work on my game
Bah, as I said, I’m not expecting you, and I don’t think anyone is. You could, but the main goal of these Jams is to finish a project in a given time limit.
>Does it have to be a big game?
The scope is up to you. It could be 5 second game and we’ll still check it out
>Can I work with others to make a game?
Of course! You can work solo or in groups, it’s not against the rules
>Are there rules?
The only real rule is for your game to be pony related.
>What if I cheat and start earlier?
Do not cheat! But if you do, then don't tell me... And if you do tell me I'll pretend I didn't hear/read it. I suggest you stick to the time frame. This isn't a competition, and there is no reward other than finishing your projects.
>Can I submit multiple games to the Jam?
Yeah, you CAN submit multiple; you're allowed to... But people normally only do one. I’d recommend you stick with one too.
>Fuck this and fuck you, I'm doing my own thing
Yeah, I guess you can, and we'll still check it out on stream if you decide to share it with us. But I recommend sticking to the restrictions. People find they're more creative when there are limitations!
>What do I win?
A completed project! Other than that, not much. It’s just for fun

Nope, the thread is for visibility. You have to WAIT. Says so in the FAQ
Pic rel is me for the past 20 mins trying to solve the captcha, sorry for the delay
While we wait, I was thinking we do a little something together...
>>42997737
I wanted to do a little trailer for the Jam as a bumper video for the con, since I haven't finished it, we should do it together!
The main idea I had was to show around one and a half seconds of EVERY game of the one button Jam (the last one), then various clips of games from past Jams. (The games themselves, not the streams)
I was thinking you guys could submit the clips for past games in the thread and we could build the trailer together. (I'm open for any ideas for this).

>Horror theme
Nice. I was digging through my hard drive and found another shitty song you faggots can use in your project if you want. It was meant for a pony game I was to lazy to actually make.
It's not "traditionally scary" but it was made for a space alien boss battle so I guess that counts as horror

The game jams are so much fucking fun to watch, and when they are part of a con they are always a top highlight.
Big respect and thanks to all the cool anons who can make fun games for free in their spare time, and to Zaifer for being such an industrious and entertaining host. Even if he can be mean to digital mares sometimes.

Familiarize yourself with an engine and make something super-simple like a Flappy Bird clone before the jam starts.
You don't want to be watching basic tutorials constantly or struggling with compile errors at the last minute.
>>
>>
>>43000150
It's purpose-built for 2D and comes with a lot of built-in functions, but tutorials vary wildly in quality and you need a basic level of code knowledge to make it work well. If you know how to code you can choose any of the big names and you'll probably figure it out pretty quickly.
If you're not a coder and have to rely on visual scripting, your options are more limited. I'm using Unreal with the PaperZD plugin to moderate success. Godot's system is more complicated and I still haven't figured it out but I like the datascript thingies. I have no idea about the others.

Yup! Though it may vary depending on the game. If it's a 10 second game then it might get less than 10 minutes, unless we have the dev on stream.
I want to do the Jitsy chat again but with so many people on stream it might be a little harder, I might just hide it in the itch page when I start streaming, so keep an eye out for that.

Probably depends on how you use it. I don't think anyone will fault you for going 100% AI for the graphics, particularly since there's a time crunch (I'm planning on going that route myself). Using it to write some of the code is probably not that big a deal either. If you're talking about literally using AI to shart out an entire game for you, without any human effort being put in at all, that seems like it would violate the spirit of the event and probably result in a mediocre game as well.
>>
>>43008388
>You use ai to generate your graphics.
>I use ai to generate my code.
We are not the same.
In all seriousness, although I'm great at drawing and animating and have a passion for games, I'm absolute shite at coding and I have no idea how you guys do it
>>
>>
>>
>>43008388
I think making AI assets is okay, I understand that making a game does require plenty of skills in areas, and people rarely cover them all. But in my opinion, something made by a human will always be better received, so I suggest giving it your best even if you don't think it's of "quality".
And for code, just be sure the vibe code runs.

Yes, it'll be on youtube as that is the easiest to stream on cytube. I don't know of any other options that don't constantly make the video buffer. If you have any alternatives, do share.

I'd like to apologize if the download says something like the page has been quarantined. Itch does this annoying thing where new accounts get flagged or something and it gets passed after a few days. I made this account specifically to upload this game a couple days ago so that's why this is happening.
>>
Question:
Are crossovers allowed?
I've had a partially-drafted idea (mostly the mechanics) for a Pony FNaF fan game kicking around for three years now.
I'm considering making a version of that for this, as an excuse to do more practice coding (being the degree I'm trying to study for).
(Originally wanted to make it as a 3D game, but considering I wouldn't have enough time between assignments to learn 3D modeling and make assets, I'd probably just do a custom 2D rendering engine in Python or something.)
>>
>>43017493
If you want to avoid that, instead of setting it as a free download put it in as free with donations accepted. You'll have to set up a way to receive payment and put in personal info for paying taxes, but if you're not actually expecting money it won't affect you much. The personal info request filters out the jeet scammers so you shouldn't run into that problem again.

If you use an engine that is set up for it you can just set the option in itch.io when you set up the game page. Renpy, Unity and Godot will compile for web, I know that. But basically anything that has an index.html file in the folder and can be launched in a browser can be uploaded to itch as a play-in-browser game.

Every Jam has been bigger than the last. I know the incremental growth isn't forever, but there's a chance.
I don't think any of the devs were offboarders, I talked to a couple of them that I thought could be offboarders. They said they use the board "From time to time"
Mind you, the Jam is already hidden and the only real way to find it is to use the board.

I am aiming for marecon. I made the thread beforehand for two reasons: visibility and pone voyage. Last time I made it 2 weeks before and still a bunch of people missed it, so I made it even earlier, and I think a couple of devs are going to pone voyage (I assume they are rich IT guys), they can make their game beforehand and just post it when they come back. So for everyone else that's able to make their game in the given timeframe: WE'RE NOT STARTING YET.
This thread is mostly informative.

Not really a specific tutorial rec, but this is how I got out of tutorial hell
>find a basic tutorial and get comfortable with basic tools, moving mesh and moving camera (the beginning of donut tutorial, you don't need the rest)
>find a more in depth and specific tutorial for a style you want and can realistically learn(low poly? zelda stylized? environment? props? etc)
>open up new blend file and get started on the project you actually want to make
>get as many references as you can in a style you like (3d models, fanart, etc)
>debug problems as they come
Since the jam is due in 2 months, and you're presumably a beginner at blender, you may not have enough time to make a pony, so maybe stick to stuff that doesn't move. I tried to make a pony 3 months in advance for a previous jam many months ago, and it took so much more time than I expected, I'm still not done
If you want to make a pony anyways, make sure to look up character modeling tutorials so you don't end up with messy topology that messes with deformation, and use plenty of references to make it look good. Though I would suggest using a premade model for this.
Low poly and stylized is much more forgiving with messy topology.
If you can't find how to do a specific thing, watch timelapses of 3d artists whose style you like to get a general idea of the workflow.
Also make sure you understand the import pipeline into your game engine, it's more complicated and finicky than you'd expect
>>
>>
>>
>>43021267
>>43021585
You might also want to think about what your actual goals are. Not just "I want to learn Blender," ask yourself "WHY do I want to learn Blender." If your goal is to challenge yourself by learning something technical and difficult then it might be worth the trouble, but if all you want to do is make a game and you don't really care how it works under the hood there are easier ways to go about it.
I've tried to learn Blender on multiple occasions and I find the interface way too complicated, plus I am probably the world's shittiest 3D artist so I don't get much out of it. If you just want a 3D engine that can get a simple game up and running in under a month, Unreal is probably your easiest option. Their asset store also gives away free stuff every couple of weeks so you can get a lot of props and useful stuff that way, saves you the hassle of having to make every single thing yourself. The current giveaway has a low-poly cabin environment and some medieval castle stuff that would probably work well for a pony-related game. For the actual pony models I think I've seen youtube tutorials for getting the SFM models and animations exported to other engines.

In Unity, at least, when you build the game, you have to change it to compile for web/html and it'll spit out a folder and an "index.html" file. You want to zip both of those up into a zip file, then go to your page on itch where you upload the game. There should be an option called "Kind of project", which you should set to "HTML". Then you just upload the file you zipped earlier and set how it appears under "Embed Options".
The HTML setting on itch still allows you to upload standalone .exe downloads by the way.

I got an idea, I dreamed a game and I thought I might want to try coding it but I'm a total codelet. It goes like this: there are four lanes and you're protecting each lane with like a shield spell and you have to guess correctly from the animation which line the enemy will attack down. I was thinking like a hydra with four heads from that one episode in the Everfree and spitting fireballs at ponies. The downside is, it's not very horror-themed. And if you block successfully, you get your points/meter back. I was thinking like a linear progression of difficulty. My friend said it sounded like a rhythm game.

Godot has very good documentation, and has a good tutorial for beginners on it if you look in the getting started section. https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/
For ai coding, I usually do this
>pseudo code, write the logic in english first (if pony hits wall, health -1, gets dazed, etc.)
>only one small feature at a time, and test as soon as implemented, don't get started on another feature until this one works
>git commit when your feature works, and before risky moves
>reset to a fresh chat when the llm drifts
>keep simple documentation that generally explains your code, file structure and a todo list
>always explicitly say you're using godot 4, llms love using outdated code
>ask it to explain any line of code you don't understand
>optional but try to type out the code you don't understand by hand for learning
>If you're getting an issue the llm can't fix, read the docs

After re-watching all of his previous game jams and witnessing him abuse and be mean to several cute mares; I can, unfortunately, corroborate this shocking new evidence.
>>
>>
>>43049119
Those mares were agents of evil. You should thank me for bullying them until they cried and the game closed itself (amazing feature on the dev's part btw).My video quality used to be so shit, I don't know how you guys were able to handle it. Now it's improved and will be better, as shown in the previous Jam

The very fun times more than made up for any video quality!
And I DID re-watch all your game jams, the game shill hour and drawing panels, because all of them are incredibly entertaining and fun.
And seeing all the anons' games again was also great!

It's up to you, but my personal advice is that if you're on a time crunch it's better to stick with an engine you already know. If you run into huge problems that you can't figure out how to solve, odds are it's going to happen in the last week when your game is 85% done and it's too late to start a new project.
>>
>>43057353
It all dependents on one thing. Do (You) have a friend who's willing to help you with the engine or not. You can still do everything following guides and AI by yourself and solve problems with lurking, it's just that it will require more time on the fixing in an unknown environment. Just make more backups and have a fren to help you.

If (and that's a big if) I manage to set aside enough time to participate, and if I finally decide to use GB, I will try to provide a web emulator. Apart from that, any GB emulator should work (like bgb or whatever).
Thanks to allow these old platforms!

Huh... how interesting.
I am currently making a game, and it's within the theme but not the scope of the game jam, I've been working on it for bout a year now and still on the fence about wether i wanna make it pony or not... more on the side of "yes" for now but I'm leaving my options open.
Hope the the jam goes well, a lot of possible creativity and inspirations to gain from whatever everyone makes for the future.

Something like warm mare booties, a long, padded winter coat, but still just the same pith hat, purely for brand recognition.

It's impossible to check that you didn't do it, but if you suddenly submit a game that must have taken a year to make, someone might start asking questions.
>>
>>43062770
The stream has a time limit, so each game is going to get 10-ish minutes. Maybe a little longer if it's really good and he doesn't want to quit during dramatic moments.
You can make the game longer, but that's harder to do.

So! Remember the trailer I mentioned? I went ahead and did the first draft, since there were no clips submittedU shids.
>Why did you do this
Because there are still a ton of people that don't know that these exist, and I feel that those who do don't truly grasp all of what is being made here. I plan to submit this as a bumper to be played after every other panel.
The pacing looks okay enough to my sleep deprived mind. Then again, I did just spend the last 8 hours recording, re-recording, editing, and audio un-fucking this. Tell me if you have ANY feedback, anything to add, remove or modify. There's still plenty of time to play around with this thing.

I plan to add an extra 10 seconds of credits, at the end, using this song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlcEiREWLRY
I'll put the (awarded) game's titlecards, which will cycle. I'll mention all devs, the OP artists and the musician whom I stole the song from (It's lonebronyproductions, he has some cool instrumental stuff, you should check him out).
I'll add that later though, as of now, I'm going to bed
>>
>>43061032
Sure, maybe I can cook up a semi-playable demo in a month.
Got nothing but the basic mechanics for now.

I'd assume the biggest spike in joiners will be right at the end when they actually feel ready to submit.

Ooh! That's a very fun and energetic trailer!
And now I feel bad about there being no extra clips. Do you still want us to record some now, even though we've already neglected the chance for so long, forcing you to tinker even more with the trailer?
If so, do you want the clips to be short and sweet already, or like ~30 sec videos for you to edit down yourself?

You could still help if you wanna! You can get clips of past games. I wanted to include clips of past games to encapsulate the absolute magnitud of these Jams.
But... I don't really know where would they fit in the trailer. In the credits? After? Make another video altogether? If you've got any ideas let me know. Shoot for the moon, and you'll hit the stars and all that.

it's hard to capture the brilliance of Equestria in a game, writing/art is a better medium for that. especially since a lot of what we enjoy about ponypony is the social aspect! that can be quite difficult to model in a game, i suppose. and it trends ones mind away from making conventional sorts of games, maybe?
and i think most gamedev talent went towards modding other games to have ponies as opposed to making our own, too.
>>43050276
i really hope whatever this guy's doing sets off. it'd certainly give me and hopefully others a lot of motivation to work on a big pony game
>>
>>
>>
>>43066975
Easy.
To have a good music, you need to be a good musician.
To have a good image, you need to be a good artist.
To have a good green, you need to be a good writefag.
Now, to have a good video, it's harder, you need to be a good musician, artist and writefag.
And keep working more than the separate resources combined.
To make a game, you have to know how to code (easiest part), and all the above, for 10x the time.
Either you work with other (and sorry to say that most fan creation brings very motivated people for 5 days, and then all but maybe one disappear without saying a word) or you do with what you can do.
Compound with lack of free time, and it's a disaster.
That's why it's hard to make good indie games.
Oh, also because I'm a lazy faggot that prefer to fap or bingewatch youtube instead of doing my fucking game.

Truth nuke right here.
As much as i enjoy gamedev, the fact that I know once I get to the parts I struggle with (music, sounds, art etc...) My fried brain is gonna sit on youtube or play warhammer for whole days/weeks/months and achieve nothing. Then I'll beat myself up over how im a useless cunt and feel even less motivated to continnue and quit until i feel the motivation again, start something new, rinse n repeat.

I have been caught in this cycle for almost 20 years.
IA is really helping by giving "acceptable" ressources, but let's be honest, lot of other solutions already existed before (like open source / C0 images and musics).
Personally, I find it hard to focus once I did the part that interested me (like the terrain generation, or the inventory system, etc.)
Game jam help a bit by having small game, and thus not a lot of ressources to manage, and simple game mechanics.

It's gonna be a pain making vectors of the characters.
Dash & Rarity in pic rel are roughly what the Mane 6 are going to look like.
6 characters in a multitude of poses...
I may have to resort to the Source Engine for making character renders.
Especially since the placeholder Minecraft screenshots of the building will probably not have time to be replaced.

I'm glad you people liked the trailer... Because here's draft 2!
https://u.pone.rs/hdrzkajb.webm
Change-log:
Increased "Anon's 18+ adventure"'s clip duration
Decreased/accelerated multiple clips for better pacing.
Slowed down considerably "sweetie puncher"'s clip.
Slowed down considerably and shortened "Time for ponies"'s clip for more snappiness
Fixed error where "sweetie puncher"'s clip wouldn't correctly go out of frame
Replaced "Derpy delivery"'s first clip.
Replaced "Cherry berry goes berry fast"'s first two clips
Expunged the fucking demons (sometimes sound clips that I did not add would play through the preview while editing, they would not show when exporting.)
I'm... Not entirely sure about this one. Specially the end, let me know what you think
(The colgate's at the end are standbys for missing arts)
>>
>>43070474
That's really good and I think you can ship that version easily. My only minor critique would be maybe look into slowing down the scrolling for the title cards at the end a tiny bit. Other than that I think it's perfect.

>>
>>
>>43071181
It doesn't have to be big. You don't have to use a month to make a game, you have a month to make a game. Key difference.
These jams are a good way for people to learn to correctly scope their projects. I'd rather you do something small and finished rather than a tech demo.
In the end, you do you, that's my advice.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
If you're an NEET then an entire month is plenty of time as long as you've made a game before in 2 days.
With today's technology you can make music, sound effects between 50-100 background art pieces in 2 days, as long as you're not perfectionist or do something stupid like attempt to vectorize everything.

I dont suppose anyone's got a semi-decent 3D model of a pony I could use as a base? I've looked into the OpenPony general thread for it but i dont think there's a way of extracting it.
Modelling ponies from scratch and then animating them is gonna consume way too much time

That and she's the murderer, but you need to do numerous playthroughs to catch her off guard and make her admit she's the murderer (without killing you in mid sex, without framing you and sending you to prison in her place, without brainraping you and making you murder too... and then you get to decide if you send her to prison, help her murder, do nothing or brainrape her so she stops being a murderer)
She could be, she could be you, she could be the neighbor, she could be the neighbor's pony, she could be Pinkie Pie, she could be Twilight, she could be Rainbow Dash, she could be Rarity, she could be any one of us. *TF2 SHOTGUN BOOM*

Not him, but my first experience with 3D modeling was this:

As far as complicated interfaces go, Blender is far from the worst. And it's well worth it for the sheer utility of it.
Give it another go, you might surprise yourself.
