So how come this fandom never caught on with video gamers? We never seemed to have attracted any serious long-time gamedevs, unlike the artists and a few musicians(which sound worse than previous artists of Eurobeat Initial D).

Anon, you are retarded.
Do you know the difference between a videogame, music track and a picture?
Videogames take 100 times more effort, require multiple people to make them AND Hasbro takes down all serious projects like Fighting is Magic or MLP: Online

Sounds like skill issue to me. Git gud, faggot.
To answer OP the real reason is that a cartoon doesn't attract gamedevs. If MLP was a video game then it would attract indie gamedevs and a fanbase for it.
All of our current video games aren't played by anyone and we actually have too many MLP-themed indie video games to boot.

>a cartoon doesn't attract gamedevs
Yep, it absolutely doesn't attract them, that's why we had a whole website called mylittlegamedev.com, a websiite specifically for pony games, there are hundreds of pony Flash games (Flash was the indie gamedev engine of the time like Unity is today), several big released games and many pony mods for existing games

That's like saying baseball is popular in Europe because there are organizations for it in its countries and actually, thousands of people play it here. Lel. Any actual video game fandom has thousands of more fanmade video game media than cartoon ones. Your semanticism sucks.

I don't know how you do it everytime, but you're the only flagposter with an IQ on /mlp/. All the other fags, especially the Diamond Tiara one are the lowest mongrel IQ faggots you've seen. Trying to find a smart flagposter or tripfag is like trying to find Albert Einstein in a BDSM club.

I would like to see some evidence here. A community producing thousands of videogames around one topic is a very tall order and should be highly infrequent.
I don't, however, dispute that cartoons generally wouldn't be an attractor for video game effort, but my experience has been that the main determinant is popularity in any case.

I think overmare studios released a new video recently. They're still working on the FoE game but of course their new efforts are woke and gay. They copied some shit from the outer worlds instead of using what's actually in the fic.

To be quite honest, the only way they can follow the book to a T is if they heavily utilize Claude Code to shit out all the game logic for them and then more GenAI to also shit out all the assets.
Otherwise I don't see them making the full FoE world in the next 10 years without a full-time team of like 50 people.

The topic of conversation stands: MLP has, by my research and the other Anon's statement, hundreds of fan games made, and presumably, according to you, this is a laughably small number for a fandom compared to what video game fandoms get.
Is there some general range of fan made video games, then, you might commit to arguing is common for popular video game fandoms, which is large enough to make hundreds seem *laughably* small, and small enough to make thousands seem hyperbolic?
Just based on cursory research that I've done, nothing I'd put much weight behind but serviceable off-the-napkin, I've found most large fandoms are in the mid-to-upper hundreds range. Megaman is probably around 1.5x-3x more than MLP, which is pretty big, but I wouldn't go snarking at people the way you did over it. While I stand by what I said in >>43068013 it seems pretty clear that there are indeed cartoons, like MLP and Touhou, that are perfectly capable of drawing game dev interest to degrees competitive with sizable game fandoms. It's no Pokemon, but come now, re-read these posts you made and defend this ridiculous demeanor:

I'm going to let that one slide because you weren't fortunate enough to have both the magaman autism and the pony autism. The "hacks" vary in scope, they might still use some assets, true, but that's because of the source material. Check megaman cx for example. It's a completely different game, not just a level pack "mod. If this weren't a misunderstanding, and you don't believe romhacks hold any weight, despite holding gameplay value and made by their community, i say that's more of a personal issue. Or was it the way i talked about the shitty flash games that got me that reaction? There's a shit ton of megaman flash games dating back to the 2000, and i believe it would still have atleast twice as more flash games than fim if you were to disregard all the demos and unfinished games while considering them for the ponies.

>However, I really must stress that it was the claim of thousands of games
I said "fanmade video game media" precisely - intentionally that precice. This includes rom hacks and since rom hacks don't magically appear out of nowhere they need a developer. The original argument was about which type of fandom would attract more gamedevs, and I don't see why people making rom hacks shouldn't be considered that. (Thinking back to the other Anon bringing up Mega Man, that would practically be like saying the team behind the dozens of classic Mega Man sequels should not be considered gamedevs since they are all asset swaps of the first NES one.)
>>43066804 who I responded to implies that he even counts modders as gamedevs so why wouldn't I argue with him on the same basis! So yes, video game fandoms do attract a ton more gamedevs than pony ever could; partially because of the bar of entry being much lower.
Also, how many pony mods are there for Minecraft? I think I searched for them some time ago on Forge and it was like, what, ten maybe? xD
>Inb4 elitism of what counts as a gamedev
I say, if you don't code your own engine for your game, you are not a gamedev. Who says I'm wrong? I think Notch once said as much! (Kind of.)

Ignoring the count autism, there's no cartoon games anymore period. The only cartoon games I've even heard about in recent years is mobile app games, even for recent big name cartoons like loud house and owl house. And hasbro wouldn't have done it either even when g4 was big back in the day. Cartoon games like t.v, and movie games started to die off hard back in the 10s, so why make a mlp vyida game when it's just going to fail anyways.

2010s Hasbro being copyright threat-happy is the real answer.
However, right now there are some freeware games on Steam involving canonical characters from the show, and Hasbro hasn't touched them for a while. Maybe it's because they're free, maybe it's because they're obscure, but I'm kinda hopeful the failure of G% and the passage of time made Hasbro less anal about tracking down fanworks.

>>43070321
What I don't understand is if Hasbro's so strapped for money, why don't they just let creators use their IP in exchange for monetization? They wouldn't have to officially license it, or do anything where they're putting their own brand on it, they would just agree to let the creator make the game in exchange for a portion of whatever profits it earns. The creator makes the game, Hasbro gives its blessing to use the characters. In return, the creator puts a disclaimer on it that says "MLP is owned by Hasbro, this is not a Hasbro product, Hasbro does not endorse the content of the game" or something to that effect, and gives Hasbro an agreed-upon percentage of whatever the game earns. There's no reputational risk; the company overtly distances itself from the finished product and the creator acknowledges that he didn't create the IP. Meanwhile, Hasbro gets free money with zero investment or risk. Hasbro doesn't spend anything to create the game. If the game is successful, Hasbro gets free money just for allowing use of their characters. If the game fails, the creator takes the loss and Hasbro loses nothing. Meanwhile the creator still gets to earn money making a fangame, with no risk of being sued or hit with a takedown request. Everyone wins.

Because most of them are out-of-touch boomers (also maybe they're afraid of being associated with the evil psycho school shooter pedophile cult of bronies who are totally going to put hidden child porn in their fanworks)
>>
>>43069837
Wins what? There's a lot of fan custom engines out there. Check doom source ports and quake forks. Many source ports and forks were designed and modified for a single game (exemple: srb2). Existing engines can also be used to make games, of course. Doom has atleast 40k wads and most of them are decent campaigns or other gamemodes that play like a new doom game or a missionpack. There are also total conversion mods that changes literally everything in the game.

If you didn't wash your eyes with semen you would be able to see the list in the thread already. Mods and romhacks are listed at the very end, everything else is a standalone game.

It doesn't feature ALL of the games, of course, for that one needs to search EquestriaGaming and non-English forums such as Tabun.

I really love how Megafag shat his pants trying to prove that there are no pony games and that romhack making is a totally real gamedev, and then I open this list and see
>Megapony
>"Megaman-inspired platformer", NOT a ROM hack.
>>
>>43070357
Because Hasbro is in the business of selling TOYS to KIDS (their parents).
No amount of fan videogames or art or animations would increase their marketshare.
No, bronies were never a large market, compared to the number of little girls in the world.
>>
>>43070479
Shat my pants? my point was that romhacks still has value even if they use the game assets. I don't understand why you don't consider these cases, as in the megaman community the romhacks are as respected as the fangames, but i beliese they have made a few custom engines if that's what you are using for comparison. Most fangames use existing game engines and gamedev environments.
>>
>>43070431
I already knew about the list. There's a few issues: Some of these games are in the pony artstyle but not a fan-game. And like you said, it's missing a lot of games. That's why i expect you to compile a list yourself. Unless that's too much work for you.
>>
>>
>>
>>43070508
Can you define "game clone"? Romhacks can be much more than just asset swaps. Megaman CX, a megaman 2 nes romhack for example only has original levels and new bosses, it even implements the yoshi's story final boss battle into the hack. I believe you don't know much about romhacks in general.
>>
>>43070501
>No amount of fan videogames or art or animations would increase their marketshare
???
Videogames are the direct competition to physical toys, it is a completely logical step to introduce videogames as the digital alternative.
>>
>>43066780
The real faggot is you. You simply refuse or avoid to understand that brands aren't like your favorite OC from the literally who xitter artis that you can take and make contents by simply giving them credits.
Companies have to defend their assets that makes them income. They have to decide how if and when their product can be used. This is literally why copyright exist in order to prevent others from stealing and make abuse of others products. You simply cannot make use of other brands and IPs and expect that simply giving credits is enough also because nobody actually makes contents for free and of course you cannot make income out of other companies established IPs.
>>
>>43070511
>Can you define "game clone"?
A "game clone" is a video game or game series that is very similar to or heavily inspired by a previous popular game or game series.
So Megapony can be considered a "clone" of Megaman because it features many mechanics from Megaman and similar art style.
Romhacks that you mention are not even game clones because they are not standalone games in the first place.
They are modifications of existing games which are called "mods".
>>
>>
>>43070317
>anime
>cartoon
Since you want to be a cocksock about it, horse anime didn't start as a anime, it started as a game back in 2017. Also horse anime isn't based off of any anime or cartoon, it's based off of real life horses and their races. And lastly, we're talking WESTERN cartoons, which is why every in the thread but your dumbass is saying cartoons and not anime.
>>
>>43070524
Chris Cocks is completely right about that, though.
FiM would be in much better shape if Hasbro launched pony games on Steam and consoles around 2012 when vidya entered mainstream, and maybe Twilicorn and EQG would not exist
>>
>>
>>43070522
>very similar to or heavily inspired by a previous popular game or game series.
Cool. That doesn't invalidates the devtime that went into the game. Most of the "doom clones" are great games for example. Also, most of the "mlp" fangames are based on other games. Fighting is magic was obviously inspired by guilty gear for example.
>They are modifications of existing games which are called "mods".
Mods aren't standalone but they can be completely different games using the original game framework. In fact, this is how many popular games started: as a mod of a game. Some of these mods were made standalone, others not. Total Chaos is a mod that completely changes the game and is currently being remade as a standalone game. Does it invalidate the work that went into the mod? It's a game, just not a standalone one.
I don't know if you are just removing romhacks from the equation from pure categorization autism or just don't see that the community still made game design for the romhacks which implies effort went into gamedev, but since you're so dead set on fan-games, here's a list of fan-games i found by 5 seconds of search-fu. Note that the list doesn't include all the fan-games (seems to be missing mm8bdm for example). Read the first page in the doc.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mqGC81HvOnHsDIJSzh68LSp3tfGladQlSV LjqBzVjC8
If you can compile a list of "mlp" fan-games i will take my time to compile a megaman list just for (You).

>>why don't they just let creators use their IP in exchange for monetization?
>Steam does not have such mechanism, unlike YouTube.
Uhh, Anon, licensing exists and is successfully practiced by Games Workshop and Disney.
In fact Hasbro also did that, but they sold an EXCLUSIVE license to a shitty Gameloft company, so Hasbro could not license FiM to any other game dev.
>>
>>43070594
"License" implies "control". Remember numerous issues Seven Seas faced? Hasbro didn't let them do s02-era manga in peace, they acted like they funded the whole thing (they didn't), and ordered authors around like they're their employees (they weren't).
>>
>>43070604
>"License" implies "control".
Yes, but so does monetization.
If "Banned From Equestria" or "Friendship with Benefits" are officially recognized by Hasbro it might become a huge damage for the brand.
So they would have strict rules for the games to be monetized.

Digital dummies don't even know what gets them rewarded since they have no sense of reward, hunger and survival instincts.
