I think there's a decent chance that the high price actually psychologically fosters a feeling of exclusivity and sunk cost in the playerbase. SL is an EXTREMELY boomer game and I doubt they'd be successful at bringing in a large fresh playerbase if they just slashed prices and did nothing else; so instead by keeping prices high, the people who are already invested in SL remain more invested. For example, Baltimare was special because it was the only place that actually paid $220/month so all of /opg/ could centralise here. Jomesteads are a rip-off in general, you have like 1/5th of the LI while paying more than half the price. It's not worth it at all unless you have a hard budget cap, can't afford a sim, and would like to own anything at any price if it's cheaper than a sim.
But even then, one good thing about the whole land baron business is that land subletting is extremely well developed as far as I'm aware, so not only can you easily buy a homestead through someone else offering it as a service, but you can also just rent 1/4th sim for a small markup over 1/4th the rent price and get as much LI as a homestead or more, for WAY cheaper. Or you can get 1/2 a sim for 1/2 the price, or 1/3rd sim, or anything else your heart desires. The only downside is less raw land area but it's mostly useless without LI, unless you really were planning to just make a huge empty open field.

I don't think they're more detailed. They're pretty modern, since the avatar was created in like 2021 or so and has been regularly updated, while a lot of historical avatars date from a decade ago. There are some modern normie avatars too but a lot of what you'll see might be pretty old, because people get invested into the ecosystem especially when normie stuff is all so expensive.
But I think the main factor is that they're cartoony and stylistically simple, so they just look very nice even though SL's renderer is not super capable. So they're actually LESS detailed but it makes them look more polished.
Meanwhile normie human avatars or super detailed furry ones try to fit a lot of details into a game engine originally from 2003. On humans especially it often ends up looking goofy, like as you said maybe PS3 era video game humans. They're not less detailed than ponies but they look like a clunky game model while the OP looks like a perfectly realistic cartoon pony.

My work schedule shifts heavily towards all-day weekend hours from Fall to Spring. Saturday evening is the ideal timeslot that doesn't conflict with any other Balti events and I haven't really felt like it's feasible to change that timeslot.
