Both of those should be fine. RYM lists main genres each as just heavy metal.

>Thunder Way - The Order Executors
Really didn't expect anyone else to post this. It's such a curiosity, as it remains the only power metal album to ever come out of Albania. This country has a very small metal scene, with only 18 bands total in the Metal Archives, so for them to be doing power metal in 1993 when the genre really hadn't taken off yet, but never again, sure is an oddity. It's a shame the production is so poor, but by all means, it's understandable.
>>
>>129409675
There seems to be a contradiction. Metal-Archives says 1992 but Discogs says 1993:
https://www.discogs.com/master/585254-Marshall-Law-Power-Game
Spotify also lists it as 1993:
https://open.spotify.com/album/6hHCg1zNfhdnaBMrpzW7ha
Only Metal-Archives claims 1992. Seeing that their official Spotify and Discogs lists it as 1993, could we still include it in the poll?

>There seems to be a contradiction. Metal-Archives says 1992 but Discogs says 1993:
I consider Discogs the gold standard for this kind of info, Metallum is reliable but not 100%, and I've had some fuck ups with their release dates in the past.
>Only Metal-Archives claims 1992. Seeing that their official Spotify and Discogs lists it as 1993, could we still include it in the poll?
Yes. Re-instating your vote. Spotify gives it even more credibility since that's official.

Conception is probably my most local widely known metal band. The vocalist is from a really small village about 30 km from here, basically in the middle of the forest. I often go skiing and cycling in the nearby area, and I know he's an outdoors guy, so who knows, maybe I'll run into him some day.

First power metal Rage album I've listened to (I had only listened to Reign of Fear beforehand) and yeah, this is some damn good food. While the vocals scream Running Wild, the actual music reminds me a lot of classic Blind Guardian, complete with that thrashy edge they had on their first two albums. Seconding.

Thunder and Lightning, and for the '70s Bad Reputation.

Outside of a few songs I don't really care for it, could never jibe with the vocals.

They have MANY things in common, at least in their first two albums. There's a lot of thrash on BG's first two records and Hansi sounds sort of like Show No Mercy era Tom on them.

Even wackier than Manic Impressions, and it's on a similar playing field quality-wise, too. Seconding!
(Also, I'm looking back on the 1987 chart and apparently Killing Technology didn't make it. If we ever go back to that chart, I will find a way to get that album on there. That is 100% an essential release for 1987.)

Besides Sortilege, what are some other French-speaking trad bands worth checking out?
>>
>>129409195
Somehow 1993 was a much better year for metal than '92.
My nominations:
Damn the Machine - s/t
Ritual - Valley of Kings
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses
Iron Maiden - A Real Live One
Danzig - Thrall-Demonsweatlive
The Maiden release wasn't that great but is a personal favorite since it was my first Maiden tape and the Danzig release was what got me into metal.
I wish more people knew/talked about Ritual and Damn the Machine.

Listen to that riff. It blows my mind that this was 1980 (actually it was recorded even before, in 1979, and probably written earlier). This is METAL, no doubt about it. There's no way someone could confuse this as "rock".

That record being excluded from Metallum is just fucking baffling. I don't normally disagree with their exclusions; but Europe's debut album is traditional heavy metal, with hardly any hard rock on it (what, 2 songs?), and it has early power metal on it too. Wings of Tomorrow at least makes a LITTLE more sense since it definitely leans into the AOR direction at points, but their debut is clear-cut heavy metal.

There's a few appropriate choices but some that just don't make sense.
>Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Shouldn't it be Paranoid?
>Killer
Replace that with Master of Puppets. MOP is a far more popular record and is a gateway album.
>Louder Than Hell
Bad choice, should've been Kings of Metal.
>Saxon S/T
NOBODY thinks this album is better than their early '80s output. If they do, they're lying.
>In Trance
Sticks out like a sore thumb, should be Blackout or Love at First Sting since those have more hits and catchier songwriting.

>They're an English band, but I was going to say Heavy/Power.
Heavy/power is more or less treated the same as USPM on Metallum, y'know Shok Paris and Manowar are classified as that and in my experience there's not much difference between USPM and heavy/power.

Just finished the song. It wasn't what I expected, but the riffing was pretty damn cool.
>The music is pretty trad friendly
The actual music is trad, I agree. But the vocals are much harsher than I expected. To my ears it doesn't sound like an entirely different technique (like gutturals are) and sounds like a coarser version of what you'd hear in doom metal, but not to the extent of death-doom. So yes, I'd say this style of sludge metal is fine.

No, not bad. But it sounds like they didn't work on the song/composition that long, which of course makes sense for a band of Armoured Saints' status. The No More Tears album on the other hand has fantastic production values and Ozzy's status made sure they had time to put every note where it should be.

They also have an album from 1989 that I believe one person voted for on that year's chart, too.

I remember liking that one, but Salem clearly stood a foot above the rest of the record.

The main guy behind the Sacred Blade album rerecorded it under a different band name in 2005 and it's somehow better in some ways.

Interesting, what are the main differences?

There's three versions on slsk but they're all fairly low quality, hovering around the 192kbps range.

Some of the drums are a bit different on Of the Sun + Moon and I think there are one or two song that are either new or didn't make it from the original. It's been a while since I've listened to them back to back.

Yeah, it sucks but I'm glad that I can still find most things without TOO much of a hassle. Up to now, I'd say there's only 5-10 albums that I've had to abandon listening to because I literally couldn't find them anywhere.

Am I the only one who listens to Morgana Lefay here? I put them in a category I like to call "power metal for people who think they hate power metal". They're really heavy, even thrashy at times, and I can't really think of any other bands that sound quite like them.

This was really, really fucking good. The production's full and a big step up from Of the Sun + Moon, the omissions (and subsequent additions, like the three new songs) serve to benefit the album rather than take away from it, and the redone track order flows much better than I remember the original being.
>>
>>129457982
It's okay, but I prefer Of the Sun + Moon. The omission of Salem really pisses me off and I think the re-recording of Moon sounds weaker than the original:

That was my favorite off Of the Sun + Moon, but I think the replacement tracks make up for it.

Not a fan of the snare sound on the original but otherwise I agree.

I listened to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY2nOKh4YU0 talking about why a band didn't become bigger (in the US) and more specifically why a certain album didn't break them in America, and they talk about that album.
For me it's two big reasons:
1. Jon Oliva's theatrical vocal performance. It's not exactly something that a normie would listen to.
2. The album's production. It sounds like they recorded the album in the hall of the mountain king. I think it sounds cool and fitting but there was not a single hard rock/metal album that hit the mainstream that sounded like that.
>>
>>129471158
I was gonna say that I actually like the first cover the most but then I noticed on the third one they put the seal face on the moon so that wins me over lmao. The shark from the second cover is also there right in the middle.

true, and i can't think of any way you could incentivize it without fucking with the integrity of the chart.
>i know i haven't bothered voting for stuff i like when it's already at 3
same, and most 4+ votes are from people who used the anchor post but didn't check the rest of the thread. outside of that, an album going above 3 votes isn't very common.
>>
>>
>>129476172
agreed, the only change i've legitimately considered is when we eventually go back to a few of the '80s charts (was thinking 83, 84, and especially 85) that the amount needed for guaranteed inclusion should be 4 instead of 3
and to be honest, i've never been particularly happy with how 1985's chart came out. it went on for almost a month, and it went on so long that people just stopped voting on it.

Wait till you hear this doom metal song with Suzi Quatro from 1970:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qqmv2u7WnOc
Or better yet the first pure doom metal song ever made in 1968 by a Danish Psychedelic/Progressive rock band. The entire album sounds like typically light-hearted hippie music, and then out of left field for the last track on the album they drop the heaviest song in existence by that point in time.

MEGADETH AT SUMMERFEST!
>>
>>129479382
That album got them accepted into Metal-Archives. I'd say it's a Heavy Metal album.
The Metal songs: the title track, This Is the One, Cold Sweat, Someday She Is Going to Hit Back, Baby Please Don't Go, Heart Attack
Hard Rock songs: The Sun Goes Down, The Holy War, Bad Habits
>>
>>129479985
Yeah
Another good example of an album that treads a blurry line between Heavy metal and hard rock with a slightly more metal leaning is Riot's Rock City
5/9 metal songs: Desperation and Angel (borderline HM/HR with slight HM edge), Overdrive, Heart of Fire, and Warrior are all pure metal
I don't know why RYM doesn't rate Rising as more Heavy Metal than Hard Rock when 3/6 songs are metal but those songs make up 66% of the runtime
>>
>>129480261
>I don't know why RYM doesn't rate Rising as more Heavy Metal than Hard Rock when 3/6 songs are metal but those songs make up 66% of the runtime
that's the "rainbow isn't metal!" crowd voting it down + people that don't know how to use the genre voting system.

In my opinion after 1991 its no longer trad. You could easily make an argument that soundgarden or any alternative act is traditional metal, but thay kind of goes against the point of these threads. It would be nice to have a space to talk about alternative Metal though
>>
>>
>>129486227
I mean the nebulous concept of traditional metal.
Thats still metal, but made it bands past their prime, it can be good but the legacy of priest and maiden is essentially fossilized in the late 20th century

with rainbow specifically, i haven't seen many people that claim stargazer, a light in the black (and to a lesser extent tarot woman) aren't metal, it's everything else like starstruck, run with the wolf, sensitive to light, etc. but on rising specifically, the rock songs make up the minority of the record, so i don't fucking get it either.
