type o negative's on there because i haven't listened to it yet (so can't make an official judgement) and the one song i have listened to from them (something off slow, deep and hard) sounded fine to me.

This is crazy. I don't even post on /mu/ but sometimes check the /metal/ general. I was going to post this track and comment on how heavy it was for 1982, and here's the album already posted! Maybe I should start checking this general out more often. Seems pretty based. I also hate black metal/people.

I don't regard their judgement as perfect, but type o negative is in the metal archives (while tool isn't):
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/type_o_negative/802
anyways, i suggest you listen through the stuff so you can judge for yourself. Tool is a good band, so it wouldn't be a waste of time. However I don't remember enough of their riffs to make a judgement about their "metal-ness". I haven't listened to type o negative, so i can't comment on them.

Are there more bands with good pleasant clean vocals with wide range and without shouting, shrieking, rasping? Forgot to include Candlemass - Chapter VI which has probably the best performance I've heard so far.
>>
>>129505757
If tool debuted in 1990 instead of 93 they would be on the metalarchives. Theyre mostly heavier than Type O Negative as well. Theyre probably counting Pete Steele's old pizza thrash band as contribution

for 1982? it's heavy but it ain't THAT heavy. the first real "extreme" metal demos are from that year and there's plenty of proto/or actual thrash from various bands (accept, anvil, exodus, holy moses, metallica, sodom, and venom off the top of my head.)

Not really that familiar with such broad genre. I only know Blitzkrieg, Grim Reaper, Blind Fury, Satan, Saxon, Raven. I'm looking for solid hard rock type of vocals that doesn't sound like another Accept clone or some squeaky castrato.

yeah trad here is basically a catchall for any genre of metal that isn't extreme or blatantly non-metal. the only exception is hard rock but that genre is there purely because pretty much all metal from 1970-1979~ is indistinguishable from hard rock AND many bands (scorpions, riot, black sabbath, judas priest, deep purple, thin lizzy, rainbow, budgie, etc.) have a bevy of rock songs and danced between the two on a per-song basis. plus there's an undeniable link from shit like blue cheer and led zeppelin, to black sabbath and deep purple.

yeah i started creating personal lists with the 1992 chart as that was the first year i really hadn't listened to much before hand. i managed to get to most of those but i still haven't checked out much of what i've written down for 1993. i'm thankful this is a much slower chart than the past few have been, gives me time to catch up.

He's also into hair-care. His twitter talks about using Pureology shampoo.

People spend more $$$ on coffee than they do their hair! I've tried just about everything! @PureologyUS is worth it.

I don't. I use @pureology which is the best hair care I've ever used. Try it and see. There are several lines. I use Nano Works. Also Hydra
https://x.com/DaveMustaine/status/1028473585315262468
To be honest Dave, I think it’s good to watch my peers age, wrinkle, and cut or lose their hair. It keeps me humble & grateful, extremely! It makes me work harder. Very few bands made it, back in the day. Sure they’re still together, but the “Dream” never quite happened for them.

It's crazy how both this band and Ultra-Violence from Italy did a complete 180 into boring mallcore
I understand that they got bored of playing 80s thrash, but why ostracize your entire fanbase like that? I mean It's not like they became more unique either, they just started ripping off 2000s metal instead, which arguably has even more imitators. I struggle to even call it a 'sellout', they didn't exactly get a bigger audience either... The top comments on all their new stuff are always about who they used to be, because their thrash is still how most people discovered them. Pretty embarassing tbqh

Robin McAuley has an amazing voice. I was disappointed when Michael Schenker Group played at Sweden Rock Festival 2024 and had Robin McAuley as a vocalist but didn't play a single McAuley Schenker Group song, despite him having his voice completely intact from the 80s.
The only other vocalist who could sing like he could in his prime after reaching such a respectable age other than McAuley is Glenn Hughes. That's how fucking rare that is.
Fortunately Robin McAuley is coming to Sweden Rock Festival this year and is calling the tour "My MSG Years" so that will be fantastic.

Savatage doesn't feel the same without Oliva and nobody can replace him, but I have to admit that Alex Skolnick and Al Pitrelli did a very good job and they both have jazz backgrounds which puts them a class above most guitarists.

Well he kinda is, I don't don't like big 4 at all. The only outstanding musician in the big 4 was Chris Poland. He's a primarily jazz fusion guitarist with insane technique and phrasing. I don't understand why people think that Marty was Megadeth's best guitarist who actually sounded like some kid at guitar central compared to Chris who's truly one of a kind.

>The only outstanding musician in the big 4 was Chris Poland
Being able to compose great songs is a huge element to being a musician and Dave Mustaine is far better composer than Chris Poland. And no, making jazz wankery or instrumental rock is not good composing. That's just wanking.

I'm sorry to be rude but are you fucking kidding when including stuff that has nothing to do with traditional metal? Bastardized genres like alternative/funk/sludge/grunge/crosssover/punk/gothic are literally the opposite of traditional metal (heavy, speed, power, doom), not to mention that grunge is one the reasons why heavy metal died. Even hard rock and AOR albums would look more appropriate there. There are much more bands to choose from.

melvins and type O negative will be taken off (didn't make the time to listen to this one, a mistake on my part since it's been controversial from the getgo), but voivod is staying. they're a prog metal band and one of the main ones in the genre, if they go, then dream theater and the like have to be removed off previous charts as well, which is not happening.
>I'm sorry to be rude but are you fucking kidding when including stuff that has nothing to do with traditional metal? Bastardized genres like alternative/funk/sludge/grunge/crosssover/punk/gothic are literally the opposite of traditional metal (heavy, speed, power, doom), not to mention that grunge is one the reasons why heavy metal died.
a valid concern, but let me explain my rationale: thrash has been a mainstay on the yearly charts since 1983's, and that genre is heavy/speed metal with pronounced hardcore punk influence. many heavy metal bands overlap with thrash, and crossover (in my experience) isn't much different from normal thrash structurally. to me with these hybrid genres it's a matter of "how much traditional metal can you hear in this album?" rather than "forbid all of it".
>There are much more bands to choose from.
this i agree with, but i'm weary of adding 1 votes if i haven't personally listened to the album.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying be act like smartass, but if we're talking about traditional metal then it would be better if it wouldn't contain alternative/experimental or pure punk related stuff because such styles are rather deviations and detachment from heavy metal roots. Thrash is okay because it often overlaps with heavy/prog/power.
If you have time take a listen, it's actually good stuff. There are some good candidades from that pic, especially:
Mystic Force - The Eternal Quest
Oracle - As Darkness Reigns
The Last Things - Circles and Butterflies
Tarot - To Live Forever
if you don't mind some weird russian stuff then:
Valkyria -Self titled (1993)
Not sure if Fight fits because it has groove elements (although Morgana Lefay also has some of it).
But it's up to you of course.

i didn't think you came off as a smartass, so you're all good. and yeah, i agree that the charts have been getting a bit loopy, so what i'll end up doing in a bit is go back to the 1991 and 1992 charts and remove a few of the more questionable choices. i WILL however, be keeping alice in chains on 1992's, because to me, the only alternative elements on that album are layne's vocals and a select few songs.
>If you have time take a listen, it's actually good stuff. There are some good candidades from that pic, especially:
yeah i could probably get to a few of those today. mystic force's album cover looks pretty sick i might spring for that one first.
>Not sure if Fight fits because it has groove elements (although Morgana Lefay also has some of it).
i'd say groove belongs. at its core it's just slower, more rhythmic thrash. the problem however, is that there's a fair amount of groove that overlaps with industrial and to a lesser extent death and nu.

How much overlap does this have with traditional metal ?
Stuff like “Question?” or “No One’s Kind” might be the most ‘traditional’.
Some songs seem outright like thrash or groove. I’m thinking they took a lot of inspiration from later pantera.
Some definitely aren’t metal at all. “four walls” isn’t even hard rock, it’s too mellow. “The funeral” isn’t even resembling rock, being some kinda twenty minute ambient track.

there was a little sabbath in there, but what i heard the most was a more alternative melvins, some pantera on the more overtly metal songs (which makes sense, i've read that these guys were a core influence on pantera going groove), and alice in chains in a few of the vocal harmonies. though again, i'm not sure if this is a case of helmet influencing them or vice versa.
