The unusually warm February weather has got the side streets and alleys to an appalling state. Glare ice with random shallow ice ruts. Even with studded tires on my fat bike it isn't easy going. Hit one of those ruts and the tire slides off sideways. Cooler this week so the roads probably won't improve.
The main roads and paths are mostly bare pavement which isn't great with studded fat bike tires either, noisy and slow. Maybe I'll take the mountain bike out and try to avoid the glare ice spots.
I took the mountain bike with studded tires out today. The arterial roads are mostly bare pavement except where people park. Still a lot of melting going on, so the minor roads might clear up a bit before it gets colder again. Its nice being able to get in a bunch of February riding even though the roads have been wet every day.
I added magnetic connectors between my heated gloves and extension cables. So much easier than trying to plug in dc plugs one handed while wearing gloves.
>>2065785 Most of our snow melted over the past 2 weeks. This week we are in for big snow mid-week. Its been nice to get a lot of warm riding in during February which is usually our coldest month. I'm currently at an 11 day riding streak.
>>2065568 I have had a strong headwind to and from work for the past 15 years... the universe hates you. The sooner you learn that, the better. I don't even care anymore. Caring means the universe wins.
Even with sealant my fat bike tire is going flat overnight. Surly’s rubber compound is shit and flakes off the inside of the tire exposing the casing fibres which wear holes in tubes. Tons of tread left on the tire after 7 years & 10,000 km of winter use. Previous tire lasted about the same distance. I found a good deal on a studded 45nrth Wrathlorde tire, I haven’t had any issues with the 45nrth tire I’m using on the front wheel.
>>2066206 Latest flat was stranger than I originally thought. I put the pump on it yesterday to see if it could hold air long enough for a ride. But when I screwed the pump head on, the valve stem started spinning. After removing the tube I saw the stem was seated very loosely into the tube and could easily be pulled out and pushed back in. I don't think that caused the leak a month ago as I did manage to find a hole the sealant plugged.
Maybe the 2 in 1 Slime softened up the rubber, maybe a coincidence. Slime was just a one time thing to see if I could squeeze the rest of the season out of the tire. Got a replacement on the way, and a new tube.
>>2066358 It's more likely that happened from riding with low pressure. Sealant helps stop a leak but if you don't top off what left the tube, you might rip the valve off the tube riding with low pressure
>>2066465 today I "installed" a new mirror on my bike that is actually decently big and lets me see behind me. but i still had the old too-small mirror on there. so i flipped the old mirror around to face traffic in the hopes of blinding those who drive at me with high beams or otherwise misaligned headlights. two cars so far have turned off their high beams whilst approaching me. the campaign has begun in earnest and combat victories are already happening
First proper ride of the year and it was underwhelming and already got annoyed by how retarded shared-use paths are. Guess I will do another month of zwifting
Finally got fed up with winter killing my bb, installed picrel today. It is pretty nice and was fun to install and tweak to perfection. Lighter than I thought it would be.
>been riding nothing but fixie for like 5 years >rode it everywhere, main mode of transport >decide I want to be able to coast again >cobble together the beginnings of a touring bike >first test ride today >beautiful weather >first time above freezing in months >sun is out >very little traffic >coasting down long hill and just relaxing >normally I would be pedaling like mad or killing my knees >just relaxing >get too relaxed >body goes into fixie mode >FUCK! I AM NOT PEDALING! >body braces for pain >nothing happens >just keep on coasting effortlessly along >repeat
went out on a small ride to test my new saddle and damn, I have underestimated the power of the sun, had to turn around after 10km, it got way too hot and I was only wearing merino longsleeve and jacket and thin sweatpants. my ass was alright after those 20km, so the saddle is staying, I think.
>>2066651 Sealed just have an o-ring or the like between the case and the spindle to seal it, water still gets pulled in by the turning spindle but not enough to matter. If that water has an abrasive diluted in it, such as road salt, that abrasive starts grinding away the seal. Once the seal is eroded enough water and filth will get in to destroy those high performance cartridge bearings with their tiny balls and light grease. I average 2 years out of a sealed unit, generally it is in sorry shape during the second winter but I tolerate it as long as it is not noisy so I can have a fresh BB for spring.
Cup and cone use larger balls which don't care as much about a bit of filth and are packed with a good amount of a heavy grease which keeps the filth and water away from the races. In the case that enough filth gets in there that it starts affecting performance or water has washed away much of the grease, you just clean and repack. All that heavy grease will get you through most any winter.
What you can't quite see in this picture is that this BB has o-rings in the cups, so are sealed as well as most sealed BBs when combined with the sleeve. It has a bit more friction than the high performance cartridge bearings in sealed BBs but not enough for me to care about and considerably less than salt filled BB it replaced.
During the shutdown when everything was sold out and I needed a new crank, I ended up switching to an external BB, those things suck for winter, lucky to get get one winter out of them. I swung to the other fence.
>>2066670 I thought the same thing and years ago I used it for my wheel bearings
Marine grease is just thicker grease, good for keeping water out but it also starts to thicken in the cold at a higher temp than standard bearing grease. Standard bearing grease starts to get noticeably thicker around -10F, you pedal harder, by -30F the grease is thick enough to make riding on level ground feel like a climbing a 10 degree grade. Marine grease shifts that by around 15 degrees, you notice it getting thicker as you approach 0F, level ground at -30 feels like a good hill climb.
Not good stuff for serious cold but good for the extreme wet and since making the grease thick also shifts the point at which the grease turns liquid and runs out of your bearings, good for the summer heat. But you are probably not going to notice the difference, normal bearing grease is designed to take the sort of heat that happens in car wheels, probably not going to manage that on a bike. Probably would help some if you are biking through the rainforest.
Feel like I am forgetting to adjust something on my bike but can't figure out what, and I feel like it is something fairly important.
>>2066670 >>2066672 you have to use chainsaw bar oil diluted to a specific ratio with ethyl mineral tree spirits. nothing else will possibly work on a bicycle
>>2067075 Most everywhere has had to sacrifice store space and warehouse space for ebike stuff, midrange is bargin hunters so little profit and a massive selection, so it is what has to go to make space for the ebike stuff. Ebike also took a chunk of the midrange market since midrange people tend to be the sort to follow trends. In the US somafabshop is the best bet, otherwise any decent bike shop will be able to get what you want. There is plenty of it still available but you need to be able to go right to the distributor or manufacturer for much of it these days, somafabshop is the retail front for Merry Sales, one of the big distributors.
Getting into the time of year where the roads can be wet but the water freezes on contact with bike frame. My front deraileur froze up and when I tried for force it I blew out the cable housing I should have replaced a few years ago. The housing had rubbed a hole in the plastic then the wires started rusting and finally gave way. The RD housing was like that too so I replaced both.
How much do I need to bike every day to stop being obese? I've grown noticeably bigger calves than my friend who otherwise mogs me everywhere above the hips, yet my BMI remains stable at 33.
>>2067182 doing lots of cardio won't help you lose weight and it can actually hurt you. you will hate it, you will injure yourself and you will be ravenous so you'll overeat anyways. you need a calorie deficit to lose fat, there is no other way. check the fat loss general on /fit/.
>>2067182 >>2067248 anons here have self-reported weight loss in good faith, but they were riding a lot because they loved it and it happened, not because they were riding as a weight-loss regimin. exercise is great but calorie counting is the sure shot.
Reading the "nutrition advice" on 4chan is exasperating
Running a prolonged calorie deficit takes mind games because it's going to suck and things that suck will make you want to stop doing them. You absolutely need to come up with something that works for YOU, based on your lifestyle and what motivates you
The mind games are the hard part to figure out what works, so armchair physicians just sperg about CICO like they're offering new or interesting information and then get angry when you point out that there's a little more to it than that
>>2067466 This too. This is just masturbation. Go ahead and call me fatty or nigger or pajeet, you know you're not contributing anything of value. I hate people like you for shitting up the internet.
>>2067467 Nigger. I am replying to this line >>2067461 >Running a prolonged calorie deficit takes mind games because it's going to suck and things that suck will make you want to stop doing them. I am saying dont bitch out and commit to your calorie deficit. Stick it out.
>>2067470 Yes and I am saying you are saying nothing of value and the only purpose of your post is to masturbate. I'm not the fat guy, my BMI is 22, but I have done bulk/cut cycles before, and from personal experience (something you lack), the psychological part is the hard part, success comes from figuring out what motivates/demotivates you, and that's different for everyone. So "don't be a bitch" is absolutely fucking useless. People know it's hard. That goes without saying. So shut the fuck up, idiot. You aren't smart.
>>2067461 imagine playing mental gymnastics to justify being a fatty have you tried maybe, idk, enjoying the exercise? Radical I know but you actually need to enjoy your workout to stick with it. It's a mindset thing, if you find comfort in food, of course you'll be a fatass, if you find comfort in exercise, you'll be /fit/ af bro but it starts in the mind and you already lost. Food is a curse, not a comfort, stay fat, fatty
+18C midweek, that ought to nuke most of the snow. Though we usually get a short lived big dump of snow sometime in April. The annoying part is I'm tempted to remove the studded tires as early as possible, but ice can quickly return.
>>2066633 So, after a few weeks of being able to coast, still feel out of control when going down hills, and just spent a hilarious amount of time going over my drive train try to figure out what was causing the pedals to rotate when I pushed the bike backwards. It was only like 15 minutes, but that it took that long for me to remember how a freehub works gave me a laugh.
It no longer feels like it takes effort to get the pedals turning and have mostly stopped trying to mount by giving a push, hopping on and letting the pedals come to my feet. Pedals are still never where they should be though.
>be me >on the cycle path >loser with some expensive bike with tt bars going SLOW AS FUCK >fly past him >”nice bike” >he cant hear me my hub is too loud gapped him and his stupid 4 yearold daughter get fucked slow losers
>>2068550 I remember when I was a wee lad I put some expensive-looking rims on my car. It wasn't that I needed the rims, but I wanted a set of snow tires in addition to my all season, and the bling rims were on sale
As soon as those rims went on, every dirtbag with a fartbox or a clapped out economy muscle car would try to 'race" me when the light turned green. Wasn't even a fast car but I guess it was the kind of car where if you wanted to make a stealth fast car, that would have been a good choice
it's funny how insecure people get when they see something that looks fast. I think mostly a young man thing though
>>2068561 Most of the time it isn't insecurity, it is just being young and blindly accepting things exactly as you see them and seeing how you measure up against the world as you see it, everything is a challenge to meet at that age. Everyone who develops self awareness has a pile of such stories. You did exactly the same thing he did, just with "maturity" instead of a bike, might want to work on that self awareness.
Not that anon, but actually you had to have the last word which makes you the winner. Proud of yourself? well don’t be. because im about to hit post. and point out the fact you are all foolish better luck next time buddy
>>2068573 My whole point was that there is no superiority to be had here; it is not much of a win when the other person does not know they are racing, what the course is, or even what sort of race it is.
Whenever I see someone else on a bike I have to be faster than the person, similar to when I see a female I can only think about having sex with her. Being faster than ebikers is 90% of my motivation to go out riding at all. I did intense interval training throughout the winter on my smart trainer just for this. I time Strava start/stops precicely to get the largest numbers in the record. I ride a beater alloy road bike and on an actual race last year I passed many carbon fags uphill.
Last year I had the most intense Cat6 of my life. It was on my 22km commute and the race lasted about 18km. He was same age, similar bike. In the beginning there is a steep incline and I always pass each and everything on it without blinking an eye (7 in the morning you know). Passed that guy, didn't even turn around, and some moments later he flew past me again with what felt like super sonic speed. I almost crapped my pants. But he was obviously deep into anerobic on that incline so I knew he can't sustain it and I took over some kms later. This went on like this, back and forth for the rest of the ride. I think he was more powerful than me but I took a small shortcut which he missed and I was first by a tiny margin when we reached the target city. Never saw that guy again. I was scared for weeks to encounter him again.
>>2068668 I just got it because it was a good (used) price compared to other bikes I could find, and it had everything I wanted. I'm a very casual rider so ymmv but I am very happy with it.
>>2068669 I just want a sturdy and reliable yet fun to ride bike that wont break on me while I'm coasting out in the countryside. Trek ticks all of the boxes for me so far.
>>2068670 Any of the of the steel frames from the "boutique" brands will do and there are a great many on the used market at any given time. There are lots of deals to be had with these frames and a large variety to pick from. It is a shame that Nashbar died, they were offering the same stuff as the boutique brands and even did carbon but did it without the marketing and markup.
I recently rode on a New Albion Privateer, quite nice and it would be near the top of the list for me if I was in the market, frame costs like $475.
>>2068674 yeah almost all of the good bikes come from well established manufacturers since they got the engineering part perfect rest is a mix and match game I can stretch my budget upto a grand if it means having a nice allrounder which will last me for many years
>>2068675 Outside of carbon, the engineering was all sorted out ages ago, this is well traveled ground at this point. The engineering that Trek offers in a $1k bike is the engineering of the accountant and marketing firm, not to say these Treks are bad, just that for $1k you can get a barely used and heavily updated bike from one of the boutique makers that is just as well engineered as far as the frame is concerned.
Many of these boutique makers are well established. some of them have been in buisness longer than Trek. The difference between them is that Trek went into high performance and had Lance winning races on those high performance frames.
>>2068679 I guess we do pay for the branding more than the actual product after a certain markup. I will look into whats available here in my state very soon, more likely than not I will spend money on something decent.
>>2068679 You're smoking crack, you're not getting a current-spec bike from a smaller maker for less than Trek. Trek sells for cheap because Trek has buying power from suppliers. You can't get that kind of leverage if you're a small shop in Marin County or whatever.
>>2068687 What do you think I meant by barely used and heavily upgraded? I probably did mean buying a brand new and completely stock bike from a small shop in Marin county or whatever, probably the crack.
Time to lay off riding for a few days. We got some snow and the city is hitting the streets with straight salt. That briny water makes a mess of components very quickly. Should be dry again by Saturday.
I rode on grable but in 20 mph gusting to 40 mph in open farmland and it really sucked. This is normal where I live. I rode this shit heap. I didnt even take a new pic I was so demoralized.
another day, another combined 20K, another random flat and bunch of parts on my shitbike exploding for no reason. actually tempted to just buy a fucking motorcycle at this point
>>2068709 I love the stance of that machine. The big ring in the front, the rejection of disc brakes, the tiny cassette, the pretentious deep section wheels. With the Marlboro sticker it appears that some cowboy is riding this, who will first whip your ass in the Cat6 and then again physically afterwards while mumbling tales about him not needing big range cassettes and disk brakes because he actually does not brake at all.
>>2068820 its not flat but it was the only scenic part gravel roads can get steep quickly and it already takes a lot of power with less grip and with no exp on gravel and depleted energy on the way back its not fun
>>2068808 >>2068810 Im glad you see the vision non drive side pic for any perverts itt really does feel like a cat6 rocket, thought it would be worse climbing cos of all these people whining that big rings are overkill but it fucking moves anyway
>>2068948 >need a new tire >unless it's a specific tire from a specific brand it literally won't fit in the frame >get into a collision >anything that gets broken can't be replaced because proprietary everything >can't even add lights/computer/etc because all the tubes are flattened >even the water bottles are proprietary, if one gets fouled or broken you aren't allowed to drink water anymore trailerqueen/10
>>2068829 Its a "Giordano Triste" aka a Kent. I paid $248 on clearance and it was barely worth that. It was my 1st steel bike and the frame can clear 2.2 race kangz in 650b so it has that going for it. The bars and stem were good decent too I guess but so we're they are the $248 Walmart grabel bike I also own.
>>2068986 Wrong pic. That's my practice tube for painting. Going to paint the frame glitter metalic silver on the Walmart bike. It got some sun damage and I hated the green anyways. The Kent thing actually has decent paint on it that has held up well to UV.

One (hopefully) last snow on Thursday, up to 4". Everything had mostly melted and dried out, so its going to get wet again. I've been enjoying riding without studded tires since the weekend.
deliverycucked for 60 km, pretty proud since I usually keep it to 30-40. some nice people and perfect weather (light drizzle, no wind). it's not a good job, but it is a good excuse to ride I guess
>>2071939 Enough to buy 2 more sets. They feel kinda fast. I don't think they supple and they kinda heavy but I honestly don't know what a supple tire feels like. I put TPU tubes in them and felt no difference.
>>2071939 I feel like they're not doing as good of a job absorbing bumps as the green marathons I have on this thing. I really just like the look of them, they're somewhat fast slicks that so far haven't given me any punctures, they're the same brand and the bike, and since GT doesn't exist anymore it's FOMO that made me buy the 2 back up sets.

>>2072295 It has xc tires on it but in 27.5. Maybe it's the aero bars I have on it that make it look look like an xc bike? I use those to give my hands a rest qhen numbness creeps in. carbon wheels and rim brakes in the rain, honestly fine. You lose a little breaking performance but experienced absolutely none of what people seem to say about it, i guess i just choose good pads?
>>2065284 >fixed gear rider >boozing I limit my boozing to the weekend. I'm the designated drunk rider for the kfc run everytime. But that's just my theory
>>2072367 they just bite like a motherfucker if you squeeze hard enough regardless of weather Pretty good fucking purchase man do people just go around lying about rim brakes?
>>2072374 >Pretty good fucking purchase man do people just go around lying about rim brakes? Alot of peoples first experiences with rim brakes are the dogshit ones they put on kids bikes or sub 300 usd 300 speed beaters. So when people buy a new or used bike with even mechanical disc brakes they think it's the new tech that makes the braking better and not the fact they are actually decent disc brakes. I use a shimano tiagra rim brake caliper and the braking is great.

Being a total memebike, I hopped on it at my LBS while picking up parts mostly for a laugh. Wasn't even in the market for a bike. It was so comfy though, it won me over. I bought it on the spot even though I knew I was going to replace half of the components because they were bizarre choices. The bare frame option wasn't worth it. Solid bike though, and light for how overbuilt it is.

only did 5 miles today. Thought it was like 3 before I checked strava. It's getting easier to do. I have officially biked every day for a week, gonna keep at it. I need to lose weight.
I just bought a gravel bike Saturday. To make a long story short, today was my first time really riding it. I did 6 miles of rural gravel roads. I found out real quick to stay away from the sides. It was significantly easier to ride where traffic has driven and there was hardly any loose gravel. I had to walk up hill a couple times on the way out. The hills are just so long that way. Took a 5 minute break at the halfway point. Then it was easy peasy on the trip back. The bike is a 16 speed in a 2x8. Didn't bother using the larger gear on the front derailleur.
Eventually I want to do a full 16 mile loop that is majority paved. That way the 10 mile each way commute to work should be a breeze.
I was about to head out this morning when I noticed a bunch of center lugs missing from my Schwalbe Rapid Rob front tire. There's a section where all the lugs are starting to peel off. That explains the intermittent noise / bump I felt when coasting. Its a fairly new tire so I should be able to get a warranty replacement.
>>2075379 The first replacement the LBS handed me also had lugs separating from the tire. The second looked good. Probably a lot of people riding on tires from a bad batch.
