Of course, she needs to get to the underground city first. Which shouldn't be too hard as she needs only to ask for directions to get under the city, perhaps learn more about the history of this place? if you're going to be plundering an artifact from somewhere you may as well know the history of it after all.

Jinx isn't exactly the greatest at planning, nor does she really know how to fight, barter investigate. To put it bluntly she's winging this entire thing, but she believes that this is what she must do to become a true treasure hunter.

Also she's flat broke and needs the money, treasure hunting seemed like the easiest way to make some cash

after formulating something that could charitably be called a plan while on the boat to the city's dock, she disembarks from the ship and takes in all the sights, sounds and smells of the great city she's going to be stealing from. The chatter of civilians in the distance, ship workers muttering to each other, the rushing waves. It filled Jinx with ideas on what to do next!

Talking to the locals seems like a good idea but they probably wouldn't know much, and besides they look pretty shady. and walking straight into the city sounds like a good way to get mugged, or killed, or both. So Jinx settles on the guard stationed at the dock

"Hello?"
she asks
"I just got off at the dock and I'm a little lost, do you mind helping me around?"

"Yes! of course!"
the guard responded in a performatively authoritative voice
"what is it you need help with, ma'am?"

"well..."
Jinx hesitates before she answers, she wonders if immediately asking for directions to the underground city would flag her as suspicious, but she decides to continue anyways
"I'd like to know how to get to the underground city"

The guard pauses for a bit, thinking of a way to answer Jinx's question
"are you sure? the folk in the underground city aren't exactly open to newcomers, In fact they're quite hostile to them. If you really wanted to get down there you'd need to find an opening hatch deeper in the city. You're pretty far out here in the docks. there's a shortcut to the inner city by the Old Port Motel but after that you're on your own. Not that I'd want to go down there with you anyways, most people have no reason to go down there unless they're up to something suspicious"

Suddenly the guard looks straight into Jinx's eyes, bluntly asking her.
"you aren't up to anything funny, right?"

ok, the update will be posted soon. I wanted to say sorry for the length of time between posts. I'm still getting used to balancing college and hobbies so bear with my while I still try and get my bearings with this stuff. I'd also like to mention that I had to learn to draw with a mouse because I forgot my drawing glove somewhere else and doing art without it on my laptop screen feels like cock, so for like a week theres going to be a noticeable change in quality

...also said laptop updated over night and erased a bunch of my drawings for this quest. a bunch of annoying but not that serious shit happened in a row and it stalled me for a bit. But an update will be posted soon today! I promise!

Jinx didn't think she'd be caught in a lie this quickly. For a moment she's at a loss for words, not knowing how to get out of this difficult situation. In a panic she blurts out that she's from a college across the country and she came here on a anthropological expedition to research artwork created by the culture that lives under this city. She isn't all too confident in this lie. But it was either this or offer her body to the guard, a possibility she wasn't exactly exited for. Besides the guard didn't seem the lecherous type and would probably just arrest her for prostitution. Maybe lying about diarrhea would have been a better option...

The guards demeanor changes, his scowl softens and his body relaxes.

"Oh thank goodness, we've had a bunch of treasure hunters come in recently and they've been a huge trouble. It's giving the government of Iron Bay a headache protecting these morons from themselves, I mean none of the police or military even bother going down there to deal with crime because there's so much of it. They stay down there, we civilized people stay up here- but I'm getting off track. See the Iron Bay government will gladly provide guards and protection to researchers who want to go down there, I'm sure you have all the papers you need so if you'd like I will gladly escort you to the nearest government office so you can ask for protection and grant money"

Jinx didn't think it would work, but now a new problem has emerged. She's begun to dig herself into a lie that's going to get harder and harder to convince others is true, of course now she can play it off quite easily but eventually this is going to come crashing down. Given her new conundrum, what should she do now?

Jinx hatches an ingenious idea, a lie so full proof and air tight not even the brightest minds could see through it, first, she allows herself to be escorted by the guard

"Oh, how rude of me to not ask, what college are you doing research for?"
Now it was time for Jinx's second part of the plan, upon being asked this difficult question by the guard she feigns a slip and tumbles off the dock, crashing into the ocean with a loud splash. Chuckles escape from the mouths of observing locals but it's the guard who offers to help her out

Jinx briefly considers using this moment to woo the guard, perhaps use the image of her wet clothes sticking to the frame of her body to win the favor of the guard without prostituting herself outright. While this seemed like a solid addition to her plan on paper she did forget to consider two things. One, her cloak was too baggy to stick to her in a manner that could be seen as erotic and two, she looked less like a beautiful lady in need of saving and more like a wet dog, realizing this she decides to end her plan without the bonus of seducing the guard

"Oh no! my papers! all the important forms and papers I needed to give to whoever I needed to are lost in the ocean"
She cries as the guard pulls her out, Her acting wasn't exactly the best and she kept the language in her moping as vague as possible because in reality, she had no idea what forms even needed to be turned in to where.

Somehow, some way, the guard believes her! As he pulls Jinx out of the ocean he attempts to calm her, explaining that everything she needs can be figured out at the government office he'll escort her to. This act of kindness does make Jinx feel a tad regretful, no one this kind should be taken advantage of and yet here she is...This fleeting notion of regret is quickly dashed when Jinx remembers the sheer volume of money she can make treasure hunting here.

The two walk and make light conversation, Jinx purposefully keeping quiet as to not give too many details. She is lying after all, and keeping track of too many details will be the end of this lie.

"And your name?"
The guard asks

Jinx thinks for a bit, perhaps she should give an alias? or pretend she didn't hear the question? or maybe throw herself into the ocean again? Jinx opts to give her real name, after all the guard has helped her quite a bit, the least she can do is give him her name
"Jinx"
she responds

"A nice name, you may call me Hans"
after a bit more walking they finally make it to the government building

"I believe this is where we part ways, Jinx. I am happy to be of assistance to you"
Jinx smiles at him, before she notices Hans make a motion at her

"what is it?"
Jinx asks

"Well, it's just- You've been soaking wet the entire time I've been escorting you, I'm not sure if you can be let in to the building in a state like that"

Jinx didn't even think about this, of course a formal government building wouldn't let a sopping wet liar into their building, what should she do now?

While Hans has been kind to Jinx he's no longer of use to her, keeping him around any longer could make her suspicious. So Jinx opts to lose him now before she gets caught.

"actually, being in uncomfortable, soaked clothing is a part of my culture! I'll be fine"
She assures him, and then adding
"Besides, don't you have a dock to patrol? just think of all the crime happening there right now!"

Hans gasps, how could he have forgotten his duties?
"my god!"
he exclaims
"I must return to my post! apologies Jinx but I cannot go any further, in fact I must leave posthaste!"
The clatter of his armor gets quieter as he hurries back to the docks, before ceasing altogether.

With that, Jinx is on her own now. She has a rough idea of how to make it to the Undercity and, as a bonus, made it out of that situation unscathed, if a little uncomfortable. With Hans gone she doesn't have anyone to ask for new clothes but she decides that she'll dry off enough. Soon enough she makes her way deeper into the city...
