We should boycott this as spectators.

What do you guys think of Karla Karlson? Have you played her before? Did her aura enchant you?

>>97501972
Do you know Karla? I'm trying to get in touch with her. It's been quite a long time since I've spoken to her, unfortunately.
>>
>>97501659
Literally no one who plays chess wants this robot. It's too expensive for beginners, too slow for amateurs, and too physical for experts.
>>
>>97501659

How do you make chess fun?
>>
>>97502432
I find it helps to make chess friends. Right now my chess friend is missing. Her name is Karla Arambula. I'd like to speak with her if you know any ways of reaching her. Thank you.

Boy howdy does it feel good to finally not completely fucking suck lemons at this game.

Rooks can only move 3 tiles.
Queens move identically to kings.

Wa la, I fixed the game.

Is Gotham Chess (Rozman)'s book good. Havenct played since highschool and I'm look for a book that's good at explaining how I'm supposed to transition from an opening to an actual game plan.
>>
>>97502432
Winning.
>>
>>97501893
Who?
>>
>>97502985
You can probably find countless beginner books on chess written by actual coaches and strong players, going all the way back to Capablanca. Why would anyone even consider the book of some weak IM e-celeb?
>>
>>97502985
I’d trust his dating advice book above his chess books. Check it out: A Dash of Love by Gothamchess
>>
>>97502690
We do. Standard chess is full of spergs that memorize 20 moves of every opening.
>>
>>97502985
He didn't write any books until after cultivating an audience which makes me question his passions and motivations for writing them.

He's an IM and a prolific coach so presumably they aren't bad, but I'm not willing to bet my dollars on his books when there are decades of classic and bonafide materials I'm not caught up on.

Maybe if I start hearing his books recommended by non affiliated coaches
>>
>>97504893
I'm 2k lirapid and neither me nor my opponents know what I'm doing so most of itt is perfectly safe.
>>
Since we are on the topic, what are some good general chess books that don't just cover a specific opening?
>>
>>97505203
>>
>>97504893
We do not. Make your own thread.
>>

>pic is real
huh. I thought the market for robotic players ended in the 90s. I personally know a dozen hardcore collectors that would easily shell out $1000 just for the novelty, even if it breaks down after a few hundred games (typical).
>>
>>97505203
The fischer book was a gift, I haven't done any work on it.

>>97505314
I have this book as well, it is instructive and goes over a lot of imperfect games from his students, very valuable to a patzer like me.

I just started winning chess tactics by yasser, too, because it is in my dojo training program.

The polgar book is my favorite. No nerds trying to make chess poetic or build narratives around games, just wood.

For this reason the yasser book, despite being instructive and valuable is a bit annoying to read. The intro could house 50+ problems from the Polgar book, that's just wasted paper...
>>
>>97505436
one thing about the Polgar book: people overlook the hundreds of miniatures at the end, uniquely organized by which weak square is in the final attack (f2/g2/h2/f3/g3/h3).

Former vs Future World Champion

My bets on Former for this one.
>>
I like the one with magnets under it, it uses magnets under the board to move the pieces. There are no moving parts inside it, so it doesn't eventually wear out. That franensteinian contraption is completely superflous.

It's not a bad exercise for the mind to move the pieces yourself to study, it's stimulating so you won't get bored and very likely makes you more chess literate.
>>
>>97512506
>no moving parts
uh? name?
>>
>>97513504
Chess Nut apparently is one brand with them. To be clear I don't have one myself - I kinda would like one but I'm also happy with a regular board and maybe just play with a real person if you want it that bad. I might get one eventually though, especially there was a software that could play master games you were interested in or something. Definitely not interested in the robotic arm thing, that's just absurd.

the Grob doesn't deserve to be there
>>
The Grob is far from the worst first move - people only think that because strong engines around 3400 evaluate it as the worst move. However, these evaulations change over the years and while the Grob is -0.9, Barnes (f3) is -0.6, it is very possible the Barnes will take the lead as the worst in the future. Also you have to realize that as it's gone into minus territory, this means that f3 might be enough to equalize, while g4 would give you winning chances.

Furthermore, unlike the Barnes the Grob has a rich history (for a meme opening) and is a great human opening to play. In fact, the same engines say to play g4 (and h4) in the opening far more than humans actually play them, just not on the first move.

So the people who say the Grob is just garbage and objectively the worst first move misunderstand chess.

that famous Lasker king hunt officially ended in Kd2# but O-O-O# was possible instead. Funny enough, that game has a shorter sideline that leads to O-O# as well.

easiest way to find it would be using rosen score website imo, it gives a trophy for each game you checkmate by castling and you can click on each game. Can do it for your own username or some popular person like hikaru

draw-proof tourneys are basically impossible in current chess rules. If you require something like no handshake before move 40, but both players dont really want a game, they play one of the boring openings where an optimal line becomes just threefold repetition which is a draw anyway.

If you wanted decisive tournaments, you'd need to at bare minimum change scoring so a win was worth way more than 2 draws. But that still wouldnt fix that current chess stalemate rules inherently produce draws with good play on both sides. Often players don't want draws, but it's just too easy for whoever is down to simplify into a stalemate endgame.
>>
>>97502643
I agree. Bishops, rooks and queens definitely don't need more than 4 movement. That'd also incredibly decrease the number of draws in the game, since so many queen perpetuals are to go diagonal 5-7 spaces check king, go diagonal 5-7 spaces and check king.

Pic is only draw because the infinite queen movement.

NTA but arrogance is required to be non-shit at competitive sports. I forget the exact quote but I believe Bobby Fischer said you need to hold all your opponents in contempt to win. It's kinda funny "contempt" is even a basic functional part of chess engines, it's how willing the engine is to play a slightly suboptimal move if there's less chance of the game ending in a draw, while the "best move" might be shuffling back and forth and taking the draw.

If someone just respects their opponents and doesn't believe himself superior to the opponent, the end result is gonna be draw, draw, draw.
>>
>>97581402
ah, the quote I was thinking of was from SearchingForBobbyFischer.

Bruce: Do you know what the word contempt means? It's to think of others as being beneath you, to be unworthy of being in the same room with you.
Josh: I don't feel that.
Bruce: Well, you better start. Because if you don't think it's a part of winning, you're wrong. You have to have contempt for your opponents. You have to hate them.
Josh: But I don't.
Bruce: They hate you. They hate you, Josh.
Josh: I don't hate them.
Bruce: Bobby Fischer held the world in contempt.
Josh: I'm not him.
Bruce: You're telling me.

It just feels grim, I don't feel like I'm learning at all.

Nigga just take the PGN and download it. Or even just replay the game in a lichess analysis board and copy & save the PGN from there. Or even just record the game on pen and paper. If they allow you to make GIFs of games you can also just post it here and there will be a record in case you want the PGN but don't know how to get it. Once you do have the PGN you can go over it in the analysis board on a chess site or in a chess program or you can import the game and have it analyzed by the engine on another chess site.

I started playing chess a few months ago and just got my first ever smothered mate victory!

Picrel is the position. Thankfully, I had plenty of time left on my clock at this point so I was able to take a minute to mentally run through the sequence of moves to make sure it would work. I didn't want that second rook to spoil anything.

There is an immediate mate, you have to get the knight somewhere where it defends g8 and then you can sack your queen on g8. for the smothered mate.

The video shows the sequence of moves I played.

As >>97600258 says, my opponent could have taken my knight on f7 with the rook, in which case there would have been a back rank checkmate available instead. This would have been one move quicker than the smothered mate, but obviously not as cool, so I'm glad my opponent just moved the king.

NEW VARIANT ALERT

Queens move like Kings
Rooks move only 3 tiles.

Every piece has a SPECIAL MOVE!!!
You can use one (1) special move per game.

>Queen/Rook
Move "regularly" once.

>Bishop
Make one "king move" (ie. swap color)

>Knight/King
Capture your own piece.

There, I fixed chess
