So with the custom companions, do you just go through the character creation part of the cyoa for them?
Personally I think a companion section that just listed off a number of archetypes would be better. But I am of course a companionfag.

I was thinking of making a Villain build who uses the Hyperkinesis to constantly rearrange things around him. He does this according to a pattern by which a person with OCD might rearrange things, but he somehow frames it in terms of moral philosophy.
Inspired by the story Northern Caves https://archiveofourown.org/works/3659997?view_full_work=true
>The task is never done. No one else can shoulder it for us. The task cannot be theorized into parts such as desire or satisfaction. Instead it presents itself in a complete bolus of absolute responsibility. Each moment we have the choice: perform the duty, or evade the duty. Society as it has existed for millennia is a set of structures mainly aimed at rationalizing the second of these choices. Mundum says: DO. And we may either do or not do. And all the theories, all the structures, all the kings and all the ballot booths, are ways of saying, "but perhaps we can choose not to do." No.
>What does one receive in return for obeying Mundum? The other, obverse face of Mundum. I have called this thing "Mundum" bc it is the world, the real world, when one strips away the defenses one has become accustomed to employing. And one face of the real world consists not of matter but of responsibility. The other face consists -- not quite of matter -- but of the RESULTS of responsibility well executed
It was a fun concept. And so I got distracted rereading Northern Caves. But then I felt it wouldn't work well with the PCX build, it's difficult to express what made it fun in the story.

So far I've made it a habit to eventually experience the versions of characters I use in my CYOAs in their original setting/media, at least in some form - sometimes as an anime adaption, or sometimes from the original media (video game, manga, whatever) if no adaption is available. Like I owe it to them to learn more about the face I'm borrowing, or something...?
But SO MANY of the companion pictures I'm using now are from less popular gachas with no adaptations, or long-form media, or both...picking out new companion images brings so much pain now, because every time I see a new niche gacha series, I know I'm burdening my future self months~years down the line with probably 100+ hours of mind numbing gameplay to satisfy some kind of masochistic completionist curiosity

You really shouldn't do that
The intent of the artist is not neccacarily the meaning of the picture, and the meaning of the picture is what matters
Remember that if you put it off long enough skg will make all shutdown gacha create a singleplayer, where you could simply mod directly to the desired character
(And emulation will probably do that illegally eventually. It would have happened sooner if it weren't for the lack of white individuals playing gacha)
>>
>>97597616
>skg will make all shutdown gacha create a singleplayer
Such boundless optimism. The more likely outcome for the less-popular gachas is simply becoming lost media forever
Anyways, I do keep a divide in my head between the characters in my CYOA and the characters from whatever media their images came from. But the curiosity eventually beckons me.
>>
>>97597649
The masses seem to be getting angrier, and any of the smarter politicians will be eager to placate them with bread and circuses
Surely there will be atleast one of them willing to mandate that people can play video games not in support

Word of God (i.e. author) is that it takes about a thousand years to get the first spell in an element (via independent study), as opposed to buying it here.
At the five point level (access, but no spells), an element gives a bunch of "party trick" level abilites.

>Why care about them when you can be the strongest?
"Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!" :)
Cheap corporate slogans aside, companions can be invaluable. They can shore up (your) weakpoints, may have access to powers (you) don't . . .and they allow (you) to work on multiple problems simultaneously.
Think about it. Just how many events and plot arcs would have turned out differently, if Naruto had proper backup?
>>
>>97598738
Based this is the correct take. The worst thing you can do in a cyoa is trade power for companions who aren't compelled to serve you in some way. Imagine getting a wizard companion only for him to leave the next day because he received a research proposal from some university. Cucked yourself put of points you could've used for fire magic you love to see it.

I don't know how practical a MtG build can be, without at least a little White or Black. At the very least, they aren't very dynamic.
White, after all, is the color of caring about good of the Many, even to the point of self-sacrifice. Meanwhile, Black is all about prioritizing Self, even if it means sacrificing other people (sometimes literally).
Someone with no White or Black aspect is going to struggle with dealing with society, as they have no guiding metric on what to prioritize in their interpersonal relationships. Without a White streak, they don't act for the good of the group. With a Black one, they don't exploit said group.
I've got a close relative who is classic Blue-Red, for example. Just a brilliant guy who can make the most damaged machinery sing in his hands.
But put him in a group? He just . . .sits there. And he will let problems get totally out of control, because he has no frame of reference to guide his social interactions. At least not until he gets angry, or someone starts buttering him up (and his Red side starts giving him feedback based on his emotions).
Sigh - There are small kids in the family right now, and at least once per family get-together, I want to kick his ass for being so passive. Because it will be obvious that they're about to get into trouble, and he won't be able to act to head it off. At least not until it gets so out of hand that the situation scares or angers him.
(Very, very frustrating situation, as all the Black and White aspected relatives have to constantly cover for him.)

>the most badass Planeswalker that ever lived
I don’t know what’s sadder, the fact that this fag got bodied by a random archangel and KNELT to Yawgmoth or the fact that the Jastice League underperformed so hard that due to a combination of Bolas consistently screwing up, other potential rivals like Serra dying for stupid reasons like “muh heartbreak”, and the Jacetice League being entangled in events that eventually result in THE MULTIVERSE ITSELF REJECTING PLANESWALKERS, NERFING EXISTING SPARKS AND ENSURING NO NEW ONES WILL BE MADE.
It’s not even wrong. And that’s a fucking tragedy. Fuck I hate nu-MtG.

I've never watched Naruto in my life. That's exactly why I hate seek external information to know the setting better.
>>97599255
I'm not sure I understand what you mean anon. Can you elaborate?
>>
>>97599306
I think his point is that the Rinnegan has virtually limitless powers, so taking it to become immortal is kind of missing the forest for the trees. Or maybe like taking a private jet to the grocery store.
>>
>>
>>97599165
from what I know the rinnegan by itself doesn't automatically give you immortality, at most you could make it with the custom abilities but with that argument then you can also get it with the sharingan's, legendary artifact's and celestial heart's custom abilities.
the best non-custom immortality option is the enhanced body perk which also improves your body in every way, makes you immune to natural diseases and gives you 10 points
with the second place being soul transfiguration which can be a bit expensive costing 33 points but having all elemental affinities and the ability to manipulate souls justifies it.
>>97599321
>Its the most cost effective option in the entire cyoa hands down.
don't get me wrong, the rinnegan is a very strong option but I don't like how it ends up consuming all of your points so one's build ends up revolving around just the rinnegan.
>>
>>97599336
>from what I know the rinnegan by itself doesn't automatically give you immortality
Sasuke explains that it does when detailing his world domination plan.
>build ends up revolving around just the rinnegan
It is the single strongest ability in the entire series, so that's not really much of a deal-breaker.

The anime is dated as fuck (it has some great fights, but the overall series is slow and badly animated), but the manga still holds up and is an incredible read, would recommend 10/10.

The nature of the levelup option makes it more mechanically powerful than almost anything else. The tradeoff being the fact that you're spending a lot on something that's fairly achievable in-setting.
If you take levelup without development abilities you're impacting your overall potential even harder, and the cost goes to 20+ when you do take them.

holy shit, first an unexpected naruto update, now an unexpected danmachi update, all that's left is another dawn of a demon lord update.
>PATH: adventurer {+50}
the most fun path
>RACE: elf
a bit surprised how the race section didn't change considering amazonians, dwarves and hobbits (especially hobbits) are the worst races, meanwhile human have a boost to willpower which can't be gained anywhere else, demihumans have a chance of going into a super furry form, and elves have a super long lifespan.
>SCENARIO: early start (28 BC), multiplayer
poop with friends :)
>TRAINING: combat T2 -> T3 {-8}
had to give up scheming which was a harsh blow but I think the new skills are worth it.
>EQUIPMENT: none
just the free basic gear is good enough for now
>STATS: all {-5}
with how painfully slow getting the big numbers is, I should take the cheap but effective boosts
>LEVEL: 1
I have no problem starting from the bottom if it helps me improve my endgame potential
>SKILLS: duelist {-1}, affinity (fire) {-2}, shockwave {-2}, super {-3}, brave {-4}, regeneration {-8}, metamagic {-8}
>MAGIC: raise (fire) {-2}, restore {-3}, spirit fire {-4}
going for a spellblade kind of build:
shockwave gives me a bit more range
raise+super is a strong combo to boost my stats
restore because healers are very valuable
spirit fire is good for the "nuke it out of this world" type of monsters
and metamagic is here in case I can't cast the full spirit fire and will more often than not make do with a weaker but faster version of it
>FAMILIA: canon god (loki)
bringing my combat T2 to T3
>COMPANIONS: none
if even bete can have friends then I think I can make my own friends too.
apart from the already mention race imbalance, I don't understand why favored path cost 20 FUCKING POINTS when it cuts 4 of your stats in half, I get this is supposed to be the min maxing skill but it sounds more like a dangerous exchange rather than a top tier skill.

The power system of this world is basically shooting yourself in the head and advancing if you don't die. Utter madness. This world needs a better power system, and I will create it.
This endeavor will need many people to help test out theories, provide data, find materials, etc. The beginning will be difficult, but the potential of a new path, one that isn't suicidal, ought to receive everyone's support. I predict that initial success with be achieved within a century.
I chose alchemy as the main field in which the power system will be based on because:
1. Accessibility: it typically doesn't require gods, spirits, and other conditions that can only be fulfilled by a tiny amount of people.
2. Versatility: practically anything is possible with the right methods and materials.
3. Replicability: anyone can learn alchemy, and materials can be refound or recreated.
The power system will be based on paths, like fire mage, dragon warrior, shadow assassin, and so on. Each will have a gradual progression of gaining synergistic powers and enhancing relevant aspects, but also a set of alchemy recipes, training regimes, and possibly other requirements. Some will be compatible with each other, some won't. All should be compatible with falna because falna is technically just a buff from being connected to a god that can be removed or added at any time to anything. On the topic of falna, to not be dependent on gods is another reason for creating the power system.
As soon as I can, I will spread a number of the first few levels of the easiest and highest compatibility paths for free! Everyone will have the opportunity to embark on the path of power! Those with ambition will come to Orario for greater methods and necessary materials. The overall power of the world will greatly increase, and there will be many more adventurers in the battle against the dungeon.

This is actually an updated V.1 build that I've changed quite significantly. Going from a stealthy 'jack-of-all-trades' spellblade type to a more straight up fighter.
I like my companions. I can see a friendly rivalry developing with Veris. Frida trying to keep us out of trouble as the team Mom and Dora often getting us in to it as the fun Wine-Aunt.
As for what do? Probably keep my head down a bit. Brew some beer and try not to be too much of a fuck up. Maybe I can make Soma smile. Actually, fuck it. Going to make it my job to clean up the Soma Familia. Will start by clearing out those just here to exploit the downtroden. Try to attract some artisan brewers or merchants to bring in some more wealth.
Probably try to shack up with an elven or hobbit femboi or an Amazonian or Dwarven Muscle-Mommy.

>elves do not have the three spell limit. They can learn as many spells as they can afford spellbooks for.
pretty sure that is not true, the only two elves that have more than three spells are because they have a very specific skill/spell that allows them to copy or modify spells into another.
elves are strong because they have an affinity for magic (which we already know is op at higher levels), have a higher chance of gaining magic spells, an insanely long lifespan and that's before taking falna and stats into account.
meanwhile hobbits are small and frail with the high level hobbit being a rare exception rather than a rule.

I originally wanted Pressurized, but then I realized this was way more effective and constant. Which is why it costs three times as much, I guess.
>Exalt
I wanted to grab three magics, but I can always try and find two good ones later on. Instead, I'm going to grab rainbow magic and buff myself to eternity. I'll shoot sick rainbow sword beams, rolling around at the speed of sound. I got places to go.
>Canon God (Loki)
>>Combat
I don't want to mess around with random chance, and as far as I know, she's supposed to be a pretty reliable boss. She also has some really high level employees, including some powerful elf mages I can crib notes/support from. I'll take combat as my bonus training, which seems like it would be mandatory for dungeon diving.
But now I have four points left. Do I grab Torrent to ensure I have good magic options, or do I grab skills that I cannot replace later? If I said Exalt was a rainbow magic, then Affinity (Light) would be really strong, I think. Yeah, and Intense Heat would compound pretty hard too with my buff based build. I'll add those two.

Actually, Spirit says your mana regen gets faster the lower your mana pool is, so it might combo really well with Pressurized. Then I could get Torrent and Nova outright without having to risk the trouble of finding a good spell and still have six points to spare. The only problem is that would have to wait until I level up and actually gain Spirit, but I feel like the spells we can get in this are really top notch.

Okay, third idea. Taking development abilities isn't that good when I'm not buying levels. If I drop them, Affinity, and Intense Heat, I can buy Pressurized, and then I'm one point shy on three tier three magics. But if I've already got Metamagic and Torrent, maybe dropping Nova down to Restore is fine. How rare is healing magic in this setting? Cure disease could be either dirt cheap or really good.

>makes a min maxed mage build

>only magic spell they own is exalt which grants a stat buff
so far you just made at best a very strong support to buff allies (which is pretty good), at worst an normal adventurer but worse because you need a long chant time to actually get your stats to a above average level
you are also wildly underestimating how hard it is to get spells even for elves.
if you go for a mage build you want to max out your spells slots because not only is getting new ones extremely hard, getting new ones after you already have spells gets even harder, for example one of the best mages in canon can't seem to fill their third spell slot even after buying multiple grimoires.
imo with those extra points at least buy a single attack spell to defend yourself and consider getting a third spell for whatever role you want to take in the dungeon.

I already swapped some things out, but I did have to rethink Exalt for a little. Ultimately, I think Torrent is the most important spell on the list (insane versatility), but with an actual attack spell, Restore might be better than Nova since it can clear other things, and then I might as well stick with Exalt over Raise in case I have some party members to cast it on. Raise would be easier to cast on myself, though.

When you think about it, White Towers have one of the hardest starts in the In Modern Day origin. Their sequence 9-8 has no combat abilities or physical enhancements, and their sequence 7 only gains mastery of combat in comparison to ordinary people. Their sequence 6 is especially dangerous since, if they want to digest their potion and actually use Imitation for anything, they have to go around looking for magical things to Analyze and study. Being a field researcher in magical apocalypse Earth is the seq 6 equivalent of being a Mysticologist, you HAVE to constantly risk your life for knowledge. There's no church with convenient vaults of artifacts and libraries of preexisting knowledge for Analysis, you've gotta be the trailblazer. How are you even going to get the opportunity to Analyze and imitate useful combat abilities when you yourself have little combat power and no stealth ability? Ask your friends for help?

Only Hunters and the ED pathways (Darkness, Twillight Giant, Death) can do that switch, and the rituals to do that aren't that simple. S4 is a lot easier in modern day, but you'd pretty much need to be a demoness yourself or have a sealed artifact to do it, and S3 likely can't be done without at least a demoness or another artifact to find and travel to the mirror self.
>>
>>
>>97602085
There will be a cyoa.
It is most likely that we will have access to tools and resources not present in the original setting, and in such a case I would not consider it unforseeable that an abberant switch could happen
And, if it is possible, and the only other ways to immortality require conflict, it is extremely likely that there will atleast wind up being a disproportionately high number of demoness pathways
I think 'wait and see' is an alright strategy here

Yeah i agree that there will likely be abberant switches as an option, but if any pathway is available there's plenty of easier choices like Sun who has far more reasonable S4-S3 rituals. Certainly some might be forced to do that kind of switch, but for a considerable number to be forced to fight for demoness it would likely be "Only Calamity of Destruction is empty", at which point wins whoever has the better S0 sugar daddy.

The point is that anyone who knows about the ritual can easily prevent any potential s1 Hermit beyonders from advancing.
It may not be that much of a problem in other origins(because you will never have a chance to advance to s0 anyway due to the path group already having ~3 gods, so the ritual is of no concern to you), but in modern day, everyone who has read the novel or the wiki or just this thread knows the ritual.

from my understanding you basically get a not really monster not really person, who have strong magic and can bless an adventurer with powerful magic and/or skills depending on the spirit's element (still limited by the 3 spell slots rule), they can also through an unknown and rare method reproduce with adventurers to make a half-spirit? baby who also inherits cool magic and/or skills related to the spirit's element.
Spirit lore is super vague but from the few things we know I would say they are more than worth the 10 point cost, especially considering you are getting a high leveled healer in the mix.

I think it's best understood as 2 separate cyoas, like the PPPP eras. They're not supposed to be balanced, obviously adventurers can't measure up to gods, no amount of point difference would make that work.
>>
>>
>>
>>97603011
>>97603035
A Justiciar beyonder cannot make full use of their own balancing power because they would end up equal. No, its s2's best use is to be made into a sealed artifact, keeping its level to s2, thus "balancing" others to s2 regardless of the user's sequence. Every s2 sealed artifact is a 3 second god killing window. Barring other factors, any king of angel (except trash like Wheel of Fortune) equipped with a s2 Justiciar sealed artifact can easily kill a god.

>This is absurd. If you have any enemies of an equal level, they can just possess random stuff from you from hundreds of years ago to cockblock you forever. Even people who aren't your enemies can extort you to hell and back.
How is "information" defined in the setting? Do you have to kill all your friends, allies, students . . . just because they know you exist? Burn every book you wrote? And ultimately be a black hole of knowledge, taking it in, but never sharing it?
Sigh - that might be why they're part of the Demon of Knowledge, though. The other Pathway - Paragon - has a pretty messed up ascension ritual (consuming 10k souls), too
>>
>>97603148
>Do you have to kill all your friends, allies, students . . . just because they know you exist? Burn every book you wrote?
Not necessarily. The Hermit pathway is specialized in the magical manipulation of information. They could use their powers to simply delete written and digital records of themselves from existence, the books and servers amended so that their name never shows up. Since memories are a form of information they'd likely be able to affect those as well, literally "taking out" the info and storing it someplace else as a magical construct.
The real problem is removing all information of yourself from the minds of equivalent-level beings, you might have to actually kill those guys if they don't consent to forgetting about you.
>>
>>97603148
>consuming 10k souls
There seems to only be a lifeforce extraction ritual? Where did you find this "consuming 10k souls" ritual? Anyway, it's nothing, really, compared to some others. 10k is very small if we look at things from a glo-nay, coun-nay, provin-nay, CITY perspective. New York has over 8 million people; 10k barely makes a dent.
>>
>>
>>
>>97603168
Sorry - it was 100k souls in the Illuminator potion. At least according to the wiki:

You do have 10 more points as a god. You had no way to get more points as a god before either so it's a net gain of 10 points. Adventurers on the other hand now have a 20 point tax instead of 15 so you have only a 5 point gain.

>that's an easy ingredient to obtain in modern day. Perhaps you would need to be heavy handed in other origins, but in modern day, in maybe a century, all but a few civilizations will perish, so free souls will be plentiful.
. . .I was more concerned with the ethics of devouring souls, anon.
>>
>>
>>97603279
They're gonna dissipate on their own anyway, so you might as well make use of them. Even if you had to personally kill 100k, with the power of a s1 Paragon, you can benefit billions, trillions even, for a very long time to come (perhaps eternity if you ascend to godhood), so from a consequentialist moral perspective, that's a pretty good deal.
>>
>>97603279
Becoming part of an archangel is a far better fate than languishing around and becoming an evil spirit or whatever. No afterlives will exist until a high level Death betonder makes one, so really you're doing everyone a favor by cleaning up those souls.

Seriously speaking, aside from formulas and rituals made impossible by circumstance, is s3 White Tower is most difficult advancement? As an s4, you need to get the cooperation or a corpse and items of a s2. It's ridiculous.

It's easy peasy, you just need their blessing. Use your analysis-wisdom hacks to find one and ask for a blessing to advance. Both pathways have their own versions of analysis, if they look at you and like what they see they bless you and move on. Everyone's happy.

They hold all the cards. What sort of cost would they demand of you? Slavery for 100 years? All your assets? Both? Or, if you have no backing, just enslave you forever? And this is assuming you can even find one.

Assuming the author is still writing, it wouldn't surprise me to see a retcon of the White Tower requirements. While originally distinct entities, the Wisdom Dragon ascended to become the current White Tower. That makes him a key aspect to achieving the top 3 tiers of White Tower.
The easiest retcon is that "Wisdom Dragon" is a title, and when the old one ascended, there became a slot for a new one.
(And if you help a new being get the "wisdom dragon" title, well, they'd owe you a lot, right?)

Not everyone plays the game (of life) that way, anon. Some people actually foster rising stars, you know. To ensure they have talented subordinates, that potential rivals think well of them . . . Or heck, even a general sense of benevolence.
And if good will fails, there's always politics. The protagonist of LotM pulled half the pantheon into a battle during his ascension attempt. Either to help him, to hurt him, to screw over a third party, or to prevent certain possible outcomes.
Enemy of my enemy, anyone?

How wouldnthe berserking dragon in constant pain to boost his strength gonna have a great quality of life?
Being the strongest and comfortable only works if your just some god, where you are just effortlessly the strongest simply triugh your nature. So If your cheating and have the power of nepotism on your side.
If you start on equal footing with the rest well then you will simply be overpowered by the dude that sacrificed more of their comfort for power.

>hey dude, want to team up to kill the power stealer/copy guy before he goes rogue?
>lmao yes
On an equal footing, the ones that network the best will be the ones who survive unless the scaling is rapidly exponential.

Ohh... so this isn't a 1 v 1 tournament kind of deal then yeah at that point being the strongest doesn't even fucking matter.
You just reach real world politics where the most powerful countries maintain the power of balance amongst themselves individual power doesn't matter the idea of being the strongest individual is just a stupid goal if a dozen of weaker guys can just beat you up if you go against the established status quo.

I read some LOTM, but made the mistake of taking a break for a month. Now I restarted reading, and there's so much stuff I don't remember that I can't get back on track.
