Not really. Tweaking can let you spike different matchups, and there are still plenty of cards/deck configurations that haven't been tested. For example, the GW madness deck that's been doing well recently was previously unexplored to a large degree. I ran a deck similar back in the day with Anurid Brushhopper and Rancor instead of Patrol Hound and Tribe, and it was also good. It costs nothing to brew.

Went to the tmnt pre-release played some draft. The sneak mechanic is kinda weak but i wemt 2-1 with it and suprisingly has some aggro applications i was able to do some nutty amount of damage with it.

Some cards are now extremely expensive on MTGO due to the recent boom in players and grinders. This makes creating certain decks prohibitive.

The problem with homelands wasn't the setting. The setting itself was pretty decent. The problem was the mechanics. They were lacking and didn't convey anything that interesting from the story. If they released it today they would need to rework the entire set from the ground up. The set was also somewhat fucked over by not having rares and only commons/uncommons.

In fairness to the set, at the time no one really knew what Magic should be. Homelands, like Fallen Empires, was designed by the East Coast team that got axed afterwards. Ice Age, released between those two, was absolute head-to-head winner - but it also sat on the design back-burner for much longer and grew to the size of a base set, especially with the reprints (functional or identical) that it accumulated. Ice Age was effectively self-contained as a result (which actually lined up with Garfiield's original intent) and could stand on its own legs, whereas a significant chunk of FE/HL content was literal duplicates distinguised only by art/flavor text. Alliances was the merging point, but Ice Age/West Coast design philosophy was the clear winner in the aftermath.

So I don't think it's fair to judge FE/HL by West Coast standards. But also, I think it couldn't really stand up on its own, at a time when that was expected of Magic products.

Ah, right, almost missed that point. Yeah that was definitely something people in the 90s hated about The Dark / Fallen Empires / Alliances. Of course this was before colored set symbols so no one actually knew about rarity on release, but eventually WOTC put checklists up on its website. Rarity was listed as "C6" or U2" - indicating how many times a given card appeared on the sheet when the cards were printed. I still remember in-person and online arguments about if "U1" is technically identical to a rare, and how repackers would advertise "Rares only, none of that Homelands uncommon crap!" when selling on eBay.

But if you look it up now, you'll notice WOTC errata'd the rarity itself. Gatherer says Apocalypse Chime is a Rare, so Scryfall and everyone else follows suit. Well fuck that. I still remember having to download .txt files and copy/paste stuff in Word to make Haves/Wants lists for online trading. Apocalypse Chime is U1 and my hard drive still has a file that says so. And the original card order before collector numbers put colors alphabetically too - Black, Blue, Green, Red, White; then Artifact, Land, Multicolor. I still remember, Wizards! If I can't get this out of my head after 30 years, you don't get to hide it either!

I wasn't around at the time (I was a toddler) but I've read the comic which I quite enjoyed. It just has no unique mechanics. Nothing that really goes: this is how the set is defined. Even if you changed the costs of things it would still feel bland and like it wasn't evocative of the plane it's trying to show. For example Innistrad has very specific mechanics like flip cards, curses, graveyard matters etc. If they remade Homelands I would like to see some more unique mechanics that really fit the themes of the set.
