Memba when people used to attend multiple prereleases in one night just to get multiple copies of the prerelease promo? Happened during my Dark Ascension prerelease and the store owner was so impressed with my loyalty for only playing his store that I got another one for free. I ended up winning the tournament for a full box using multiple Black Cat and burn spells. Last round opponent forgot to flashback his double mill spell. Good times.

Now that I think about it, the last set I fully processed was FIN, played a ton of limited and messed around with a lot of rares in shitbrews. I didn't play any spiderman or edge of eternities limited so I don't know the cards, I played a little bit of avatar but got bored, lorwyn came and went while I was busy at the start of the year, I did not care for teenage mutant ninja turtles at all and now strixhaven 2 is almost out.

I used to keep up with every single set release a decade ago, I cannot even begin to imagine how someone would do that today.

You laugh but this happens in modern too. Last week I built a budget green and white enchantment deck for a modern event at my LGS. I don't have any shock lands so I used gates for duals.
When I got there I asked the people at the table if they were playing modern and asked if I could join them. A store employee asked me if I had signed up yet and made me pay $10 and download some stupid app. I don't mind supporting the store but the app was really annoying.
When I got to my first opponent I asked them what their deck's powerlevel was and they looked at me bewildered. He said that it was a 10 very bluntly and I asked him if he had any other decks that he could play. He smirked and just said no. He was playing some sort of jund goodstuff deck and spend the first couple of turns playing discard spells and eventually killed me with some creature that gets +1/+1 for each card type in all graveyards. I had never met a pubstomper until today and it really put a damper on my mood.
The next round I tried to start a rule 0 conversation with my opponent and asked him what he was playing. This guy said that he didn't have to tell me and the two people at the table next to us turned to listen in to our conversation. I told him that the game would be more fun for both of us if we were playing on the same power level and the people next to us immediately started laughing. One of them told me that this wasn't the command zone hosted by Josh Lee Kwai and Jimmy Wong and that this was real life. The other guy told me that this was "big-kid-magic" and I decided to leave after that.
It really sucks and I had no idea that the people who play modern at my LGS were so toxic. I was really looking forward to playing this new deck but I guess I need to find somewhere to play casual modern as it seemed that everyone there plays exclusively cModern (a word I guess for tryhard modern)

Why do you design a game?
Is it for people to play the game, or is it to sell something to someone who will never play it?
When claiming that a particular game expansion was successful, should we not discuss only the parts of that product that people who actually play the game engage with?
Collector Boosters? Premium foil serialized reprint? Alt border treatments destined to slowly disintegrate in a scalper's binder? All of that is corporate dust. What matters is the Play Booster sales, because those are selling to people who play the game. Playing the game is the purpose of the game. All else is slop greed.

Universes Beyond is a catastrophic failure to anyone who actually cares about the game. There is no argument against this. The facts are clear.

If I was working at WoTC I'd be concerned for the future of MtG. There is no denying that numerous other card games are sprouting up to reclaim the audience they're shitting on. Only a fuckwit enjoys playing current year big standard, commander is boring as fuck and basically an elaborate game of Diplomacy, there are fan made formats like pre-modern which is infested with hues and planar standard which still has fire bullshit. Sorcery, Yugioh, One Piece all of these card games are rising stars because MtG is simply not the same power house it once was. They might make a lot of money from collectors of UB trash but just look at the Leech Collector to know the direction MtG is headed. It will be just like so many murdered franchises, offered up on the altar of DEI because white man bad. I'll always have cube at least, they literally can't fuck that up.
