PAB is such a horrible service in basically every capacity it continues to shock me every time I use it. Terrible unintuitive and confusing UI, hidden on the Lego website so many people don't even know it exists, parts randomly going in and out of stock or just disappearing, recent issues with parts being "backordered" but this not being indicated anywhere until after you place the order, orders getting split up into multiple deliveries for no reason (while all of the parts are listed on one manifest), etc. I even received someone else's order a few weeks ago and had to report it to Lego customer support.

I've been waiting on a bestseller order for almost 4 months now. Support has brushed me off multiple times when I ask them about it, "because it has backordered items in it." But when I have had other orders with backordered items in them they just send the backordered parts separately later.

Am I having a midlife crisis? I'm 32 years old and almost died a couple months ago.
Since then I've focused a lot on "biohacking" and now I'm suddenly experiencing a very strong urge to put Lego bricks together. I had absolutely no interest in Lego as a kid, despite my parents' efforts to get me into it, but now I feel like it's something I "need" to do.

>upload autism into your brain
I think I already had it. My mom was 44 years old when I was born. As a kid I was hyper fixated on Pokemon, as a young adult it was anime in general, and now it's health and lego for some reason.

>>
>>11716391
Thank you. Shortly before the holidays I was lying alone in an emergency department wondering if it was over for me and now I want to build lego. I'm very tempted to buy the kit in the OP. It's really appealing to me right now.

It's sucks, but getting the merchandise rights is easier than licencing the sound effects, music and voice acting. Lego would have contact Industrial Light and Sound for the sound effects, contact John Williams for music and get the soundalike rights from James Earl Jones' estate.

I think because they want the sound data stored in the NFC chips themselves, so you don't have to update the Smart Bricks with new sounds for future sets. But NFC chips can only hold 1kB or so, so they have to store it in a kind of midi format instead of mp3 or something which would take more space.

I can't believe that they thought the fake sounds were acceptable for a star wars set, it's practically begging people to be disappointed. They should have just started with the Pokemon stuff, the synthesized sounds will work a lot better with that

I don't really understand this restriction. The Mario sets play Mario noises and Mario isn't really much bigger than a smart brick, and you could easily alleviate any storage concerns by leaning into the app and allowing you to switch between modes that way. The duplo train already kind of does this where you can load your own sound effects on the app and play them.
It just seems like a frustratingly bad implementation of what is actually really cool technology

how can Lego NOT do "authentic Star Wars" sound effects?
customers DON'T CARE about:
--"muh licence fees"
--"muh exclusive whatever"
--"b-but then the City sets Smart Bricks would somehow count as Star Wars and we'd need to give them money from that"
--"b-but the future would need to upgrade the brick with additional sound effects and that's complicated, it's easier to do garbled sounds"
--whatever excuse Lego uses to justify the exclusion of authentic sound effects
electronic sound effects is OLD tech from 40 years ago. customers CARE about hearing "ka-pew! ka-pew! [insert real Star Wars blaster sounds] it's ridiculous to launch this tech with SW and the inability to do accurate sound effects, at least with City, it wouldn't have mattered
>>
>>11716726
I actually found that guy almost 100% complete at Bricks and Minifigs a few weeks ago. My friend hadn't really took notice of Hidden Side when it was out so he was amused when I showed him how the eyes and teeth folded out. There was also a mostly complete Riddler car from "The Lego Batman Movie." I thought I could encourage him to get it. He has a fixation on the color green to the point that it borders on fetishistic. But he wasn't interested.

somebody at Brick Craft needs to quickly put a 40-year-old sound effects chip into a Family Guy set and make it have actual Stewie voice say "Victory shall be mine!" when you push a button. that might cost them $5 for the phone call to the Chinese warehouse "can we do that? cool. let's include that in the sets this summer"
Brick Craft spent $5 and 0 years developing this new tech!

Mario doesn't have colour sensors, nfc receivers, and networking though. Plus lego seems to really want something that's as app-less as possible. Now whether the smart brick needs all that is another matter..

The short cape looks so shit, I guess a longer one would get in the way of the nfc.

Maybe after 7 years of development they released no-one wants this shit so that's why they tied it to 2 of the biggest properties around (Star Wars and Pokemon)

1983: Set no. 6374, Holiday Home.
Theme: Town- Leisure
Year Released: 1983
Pieces: 257 - 2 minifigs
Baseplate: Green with a cobblestone driveway 32 x 32
This house is one of the best of the bunch. The sliding patio roof is an excellent detail, and the technique is still used in LEGO sets today. This detail and the small car screams "1980's" LEGO design. Furthermore, the house has an extra floor, a cobblestone driveway and a wonderful garden. Inside our minifig-couple can make dinner in their (at the time) very modern yellow kitchen, or they can relax in the yellow furnished living room, before going to sleep in their yellow king-sized bed.
This set is definitely one that the designer should be very proud of, and it is still popular among LEGO enthusiasts today. The price for a used set with all the original stickers has an average of 120 pesa's on bricklink. A new and sealed set could cost you up to 800 pesa's.

PAB wall is great. General you’ll save money. But the parts are specific. So it won’t give you what you want immediately. But if you go every time they change stock you should get a good inexpensive collection.
>>
>>11717376
How often do they change stock? For the build I have in mind I would definitely need a lot of tan, brown, and gray masonry bricks. I don't have a full list of what I need since I haven't built it out in one of those digital builder tools yet, it's really more of just an idea at this point.

>>
>>
>>11717398
So the smart brick interactions are actually kinda cool, it just looks and sounds like shit and it's way overpriced for what it is. I guess we'll have to see what kids and parents think about all this to see if it flops or not.
>>
>>
>>11717443
>you could've gotten all that for just $35 in 1989
>can't even use the inflation excuse as it's price-per-piece is still on point
I never can get over just how cheap Lego was, a house AND RV build for that cheap? With 4 MINIFIGURES, and extra car and boat builds? insane by modern standards
>>
>>
>>11717442
I thought that the interactions were cool until he revealed that the brick cannot actually sense the location or even general direction of another brick, it only recognizes that there is another ship somewhere nearby. So there is no actual aiming involved in dogfights and every shot fired will result in hit sound effects from the other brick. That just killed the entire thing for me and I imagine that is going to piss off kids that attempt to play with it.

I don’t because I’m on a shared family plan :^) But at least where I live, plenty of sets on Costco’s site aren’t locked behind membership for some reason.
But no nigga. Even factoring in the membership, it would need to like double the cost of sets to make them as bad a deal as your shitty-looking 1980s house. Lego fans are so committed to whining about price, they’d rather break from reality than admit $90 for 300 bricks is a Bad Deal

1987: Set no. 1472, Vacation House (limited release).
Theme: Town - Leisure
Year Released: 1987
Pieces: 353 - 4 minifigs
Baseplate: Green 16 x32
This set was a limited release which was only available in some European countries. It was released again in 1989, as set no. 6388. Many things in this set make it one of the top sets released in the Town theme ever: The house with a roof that almost touches the ground looks amazing, the patio and large black outdoor fireplace, the garden furniture, the small red 4 stud wide classic car, the auto camper and trailer, the motorboat with the timeless design, the red bicycle and last but not least, 4 minifigs,

Theme: Town - Leisure
Year Released: 1988
Pieces: 205 - 2 minifigs
Baseplate: Green with cobblestone driveway 32 x32
Yet another true masterpiece. This set has similarities with set no. 6374, and is merely a modern update of the five year older set. That does not, however, mean that this does not merit a place among the greatest of them all. Look at it: The white fence, the garage, the beautiful black car, the curtains in the roof windows, the cobblestone driveway. All the details add to this set's greatness. Unfortunately this set was also one of the last classic LEGO houses with only a few successors during the 1990's.

Lego should have plenty of sales data to determine if Toy Story is worthwhile to deserve attention.
I think Lego has a problem with too much to do, and not enough production capability. they focus on massive sales of a smaller number of sets, rather than making as many properties as they can. recent years they have had to choose which summer blockbuster movies to support, and something like Fantastic 4 only gets one set, and Superman got none, while both of those movies could have gotten several sets. but new Jurassic Whatever DID get several sets... why?
look at me trying to make excuses for Lego, I'm such an ass. what I'm saying is... good luck Toy Story! to be fair, they already have a lot of Lego sets for it, so they are likely to skip it, but that's just a guess.

do we still want minifig Mario sets, if they had Smart Brick beep noises instead of authentic Mario [ba-bling!] noises?
brrrbbrbrrb---bbrrrbrrbbrroo!
(it's a me! Mario!)
Would Lego even do that? it would be even more epic-ly embarrassing than the Star Wars sets. at least they never had authentic sounds to begin with. does this mean the expected Mario re-boot with the Smart Brick tech is now impossible?

Yeah, I have zero interest in starslop, and sub-zero interest in ugly 4+ smartslop, but I kind of prefer the impressionistic voices to, what, a series of stock voice lines? Is a rotation of “I am your father,” “I sense a disturbance in the force,” “do not fail me again,” etc. really all that playable?

>but I kind of prefer the impressionistic voices to, what, a series of stock voice lines?
the voices would be "Impressive. Most Impressive" IF they cued up when appropriate. matched to the tags or other figures somehow. it's like, Lego failed to do that, and covered with the lame excuse "we're paying homage to the garbled voices of the old video game!" NO YOU'RE NOT, you failed. you couldn't get it to work. admit it.
and it's not the voices as much as the laser sound effects. it's often underestimated the power of the classic {ka-pew}! blasters, and the roar of the Tie Fighters as they fly past, that really makes it "feel". like "Star Wars" without that Lego is just a bootlego rip-off company pretending to be Star Wars. except it actually IS Star Wars (?) so it comes across as even worse than not doing it at all
having said all of that, none of that matters:
--Star Wars sloppity-slop-slurping fans will buy it anyway
--toddlers just hear noises, and don't care if they match, it made a noise! I pushed a button and got a noise!
Can we see the poop noises sets already? I can't wait to see the little poop swirl on the tile, to indicate it's the poop noises activator spot! you can put that poop spot in the X-Wing so Luke can crap in it (like it deserves? lol)
>>
>>11717883
I just prefer the abstracted voices over prerecorded lines, seems like it would allow kids to kind of “fill in the blanks”in a more creative way than a handful of stock phrases (though I understand the appeal of putting Vader next to, I don’t know, Lando, and hearing “pray I don’t alter the deal further” or whatever). Fucking up the iconic mechanical noises and whatnot is supremely cucked though.

Realistically speaking, how do you think the Lego Group would respond to the Model T issue?
>recall all model T sets, replace the pieces and reprint the instructions
>reprint the instructions, slightly adjust the model so that all connections would be legal
>slip a piece of paper that shows the corrected steps instead of reprinting the whole instruction booklet
>no correction, this is an expert set with expert building techniques please understand (the ATAT solution)

What are you talking about? I have probably 20 speed champions, pretty much all of them from the last 2-3 years (save for all the same-y Formula 1 cars) and the minifigures fit fine in all of them. Granted, if they have a bigger hair piece, they need the helmet instead, but that's only true for a couple of them.
Speed Champions are probably some of the only sets that aren't like, multi-hundred dollar sets that actually have pretty creative builds, with some neat and unconventional parts usage. Out of all of the ones I have built, only maybe one of them was just kind of a "whatever" build. The rest have been really good.

Im in the middle of building largest project yet and Im decounstructing few larger sets to finish the build, how do you guys make it through breaking large sets? Like I did half of medieval marketplace, smithy, half of lions castle, dnd set, but it took me few days to somewhat segragate most of the parts, but its so tiresome that I just want to build.
I keep switching between decountructing and building with fresh parts, but after I decounstruct some more, I see that I should correct my build because I have better parts now.
Should I focus on decounstructing first?

it makes me mad that Lego did a Voltron set years ago and did not include the minifigs, I'm happy for MMPR fans, but I liked Voltron better, and it's near impossible that Lego will do it again but also include minifigs. ugh

I own literally zero legos but I kinda want to build something. I’m not sure what. The modern sets don’t really appeal to me at all but there’s a lego store in my town that has a pick and build wall. Thinking I might get some pieces from it. What are the most versatile, high value pieces for someone just starting out and doesn’t have a specific build in mind?
>>
>>
>>
>>11718621
2x4 bricks
incredibly basic, but also very important
every time you need to build a wall or just fill space, they'll be there for you
not to mention that you can build whatever you want with them if you don't mind it looking a little wonky
6x6 flat plates are a close second IMO
can be a base for the rest of your build
and a wall made of 2x4s will take a ton of bricks, but a wall of 6x6 plates sideways will take a lot less
you are going to need a lot more than just these two to make anything decent, such as the 6x6 wall example needing bricks to put it sideways, but if you are only allowed two bricks, I'd go with these
>>
>>
>>11717916
I wouldn't mind it if it sounded like they were talking to each other, but it just sounds like canned lines but gibberish. I really think it was a bad idea to lead with this license because it only underlines the shortcomings.
Nobody would be saying "this generic cops and robbers set looks mad gay and not detailed enough" or "this police man doesn't say the iconic line please stop struggling mr. floyd" or "this police car does not sound like a dodge charger". It would be a neat oddity for kids that maybe people would warm up to. Every one hates it because they used the Star Wars license poorly, and now everyone has a sour taste about it right out of the gate

oh no, Power Rangers is more popular, by a wide margin, not even close. even back then, in the 90's when Power Rangers was new.

i like the idea of a smart brick that adds a dimension to play possibilities.
but, it takes 2 hours to charge. it last 40 mins of play.
the sounds it makes for figures all sound like starfox tier blep noises. there are just a couple for each figure and they all sound like they are asking a question.
all ships movement and blaster sounds are not like the movies at all.
the sides of the brick can detect colours and play other effects. only 3 colours will activate it.
with 2 bricks next to 2 smart figures they will engagein half-life style conversations where they burble alternatly. its the same 2 noises every time.
Where the brick is used to enhance a sets feature, like yodas cooking block where it replaces an orange brick for the fire, the SB will make cooking noises and flash every colour instead of just orange and red like some kind of fire.
there is so much wasted potential
there is no way to update the smart brick.
the smart figures have a battery in them for some reason despite ancient RFID tech needing no battery as it should be powered by the smart brick.
so the play features are cheap shit, the sets/figures look like cheap shit and they cost a lot.
lego were thinking 'wow, our shareholders will love these'

As a kid I had a lot of fun with a laser brick that I got in a bionicle playset. I think light-up bricks would be a lot better of an idea (pretty sure there is even non-lego companies that make this) and have appeal for adults to light up their displays and for kids to play with. There also used to be light-up lightsabre star wars figures that a lot of people liked. Plus it would be cheaper, but who knows how much lego is jacking up the prices compared to the cost of how much these actually cost to make.
The sound idea I think is bad, it's difficult to make and the result sucks, plus parents don't like toys that make noise they will probably buy one once and regret it and never buy one again, I remember annoying my parents with a space gun toy that made a noise and they hid it from me because it was so annoying, and I've heard lots of similar stories from other people.
Also the laser brick still works and it hasn't been charged or anything in almost 20 years now.
