So it actually makes perfect sense for them to see Europe as a foreign place, because they're American fairy-tales now, saccharine and lacking the original historicity and character, but brighter and more aggressive in their roles because of the cultural vigor that suffuses them.

Fae can be evil. Native European folklore has plenty of negative entities, vampire accounts, witches, dragons and other things that can kill you, even childsnatching creatures. It's not that impressive on paper but I've had a weird experience in Scotland myself.
