Yeah, it sucks. I just got into an LN series where they girls are extremely shippable and I've got a half dozen ideas written down just after reading the first volume but I started a new position recently and I only have about an hour a week to write. I wish I was more productive when I was unemployed.

That's not really slow burn and I sorta hate that authors call it that. It's a slow burn, not a "is not lit until very late and then burns normally" burn. The arc should be there the whole, or most of the time but be a very long arc.

I hate contemporary fanfiction """culture""".
What exactly is the literary value of this? I at least had the decency to read and learn for years before I started attempting writing my own fics. Nowadays, it seems like it's all just braindead tiktok zoomers treating AO3 like a social media site where they spam their worthless memes. It's always "LesBian character !!111!!!", "zomg so sapphic" bullshit nonsense. And it shows in the comments too, they are unable to articulate anything more advanced than "peak".
I fucking hate zoomers.

Feels like it's probably not far off from really low end wattpad a decade and a half back or whatever. Like dA back in the day was also filled with retarded children spamming stupid, zero effort memetic shit, it was just braindead brony garbage instead of braindead roblox meme garbage.

>open fic
>character acts and talks nothing like the character
I don't understand this. I get shifting a character to facilitate plot or an AU, making an evil character less evil or a good character less lawful good, or whatever. But who is sitting down to write a fic and going "Ahh, I know what will be good, I'll take this reserved, quiet and bookish character and have her say things like 'Bitch, please!' and 'Girl, you need to chill out!'"

That's the sad reality of fanfiction; many are nothing more than excuses where the author simply arranges the characters to suit their needs or directly transforms them into another character from a different series that the author is a fan of, and any resemblance to the original series is purely coincidental.

The internet is just worse in general.
But we're all older now too.
I used read some serious garbage just because I was obsessed with a pairing at the time, like NanoFate or Mitsu.

I will admit that I use a lot of profanity in my fics, probably because I was raised by wolves and I use a lot of profanity myself. Also, the idea of a cute anime girl calling another cute anime girl a cunt amuses me.
>>
>>
>>
>>4557166
It's not the profanity that's an issue it's the total break down of immersion from a character speaking a way that does not sound anything like how they would speak. Having Kyouko call Sayaka a cunt in an enemies to lovers fic? Sure, why not. But when you have fucking Madoka walk into a room and go "Oi bruv, did you see that cunt Saotome last lesson, fuckin' mental." ...what are we doing?

Their are people who don't have the means to be published, who can't focus on their own original work. Especially when there's zero guarentee of reaching an audience. I like to read what they come up with, and enjoy the connection of a shared interest.

For fanfic (and amateur online fiction in general) a big draw is that it's extremely tailored. Th authors can afford to be unfathomably gratuitous in the niches they spend time on, and if that happens to be a niche I like, then it's going to be very difficult to find something similar in published media.
I think a part of it is comfort, too. It's much easier to read a middling story with characters/setting you know you will enjoy than it is to start War and Peace.

If you mean the character is romanticising an eating disorder, I'd think it's a little cringe. As part of punishment or imprisonment though, yeah that's hot. Basically I prefer when the author's fetish isn't shared by the characters, but the story puts them in messed up situations.

>the author's fetish isn't shared by the characters
I will admit to being guilty of this. I've written multiple fics where a girl either looks inside another girl's mouth or sticks her fingers in there, but one was a story where one girl was afraid of going to the dentist and another was a girl exploring the mouth of a girl who was really a monster in a skinsuit who wants to eat her, so I think those are valid reasons. But yeah, I definitely fear that readers are like, "oh, there's the author's fetish again".

Perhaps I should've clarified that I meant "exploring" in the visual sense, not as in the cave exploration sense, I forget what the hell I write half the time, but anyway

I was enjoying a lengthy Worm x Bloodborne crossover fic (In Pale Blood) but it ironically turned out to be more wholesome than canon and I got pissed off. A shame, the setting is perfect for crazy toxic shit. Amy needing to restrain herself from wanting to hurt people while she's healing them, and Taylor encouraging her to use her powers on HER to mutate her body and mind in a vaguely masochistic way. I mean holy fuck, Amy's so obsessed she'd rather let thousands of innocent people die to save Taylor, and when they kiss for the first time, she forcibly alters Taylor's entire biology to make her monstrous,
>"Kill them all, and come back to me," Amy hissed. "Or I'll dig you up and bring you back so I can kill you again myself."
Why and how the hell are these whacko bitches actually healthy? I wish the author had taken a different approach. But Taylor in this fic just doesn't care what happens to her at all, she's borderline comically insane, so it feels like it doesn't have any weight.
I didn't like how overpowered she became either.
Nothing else in the ship tag has caught my eye but the hunt continues.

I don't really enjoy Amy much in wormfic probably because she was woobifyied way too much in the early fandom days. A fic I'm reading now seems to be handling her well enough but she's not a love interest.

It's a Tattletale joins the wards fic. Main pairing is heading towards Lisa/Victoria but it's slow going.

The thing that irks me about fanfic these days is reading phrases or sentence structure I associate with slop and being unable to tell if the author is just a bad writer or not. And modern fandom culture is all about coddling people so nobody has any desire to critique or be critiqued.
>>
>>
>>
>>4563613
Comparatively? Yeah. Old fandom culture was at least made up primarily of people who read books. Modern fandom culture has people arguing over their right to format dialogue tags wrong and never improve.

95% of the fics 15 years ago were totally out of character borderline wattpad garbage with punctuation optional and the average piece of fanart from back then was lower tier DA crap. No one was doing quality control and barely anyone was improving. The ability to pick and choose and argue for improvement and better quality is a product of how much larger newer fandoms are. There is so much more content (and so much better content because older fandom people have had decades to actually make progress) that now people can afford to be choosey and expect better.

Here are two threads as an example:
https://archived.moe/u/thread/1487013
https://archived.moe/u/thread/3841820
Both of these are western fandom pairings of a similar nature (from source media which is het but where both the story itself and fans care more about two female leads' relationship). The qualitative difference between the artwork in the two is stark. It was a genuine struggle to find decent fanart of old pairings like gelphie or shiznat or xena and gabrielle. It is not hard to find high quality new!gelphie fanart, or wenclair, or caitvi, or basically any F/F pairing that gets popular, because fandom is much bigger, and much more mainstream, so more serious and practiced creatives make more stuff and also younger newblood is literally raised in fandom shit these days and grows up on fanart and fanfics and so has a better grasp on then turning around and making it than 00s people struggling along with little reference.
