That and Hiruko's Rampage face and such did more to win me over than anything else they did and genuinely put a smile on my face. In MGQ, the common theme is instead "normally beautiful or attractive girl transforms into a hideous malformed abomination in order to become more powerful", the final four boss rush at the end of the VN even puts this front and center since every single main antagonist does this. This also applies to the chaos transformations; likewise The D.I.'s central intelligence is in the shape of a very humanoid girl, she just fleshwarps everything around her into meat moss, but defeating her just has her spawn copies of that body since that's how she looks. Kanon is no different; there's just not even the faint vestigial trace of "cute monster girl" left in her powerup, it's just a psychotic unhinged demon plant that's driven completely insane.
The reason Kanon hates it is because it both makes her extremely ugly and drives her insane and she starts killing everything indiscriminately; even the places and things she does actually care about are vaporized or crushed by it. I wouldn't say it's rooted in vanity, so much as it's just a very taxing transformation to use and she prefers how she is.

The MW!Plants loved her until it made them look bad and then they threw her under the bus to try and salvage their own reputations. But a lot of them were still the reason she was throwing those lavish garden parties in the first place, because Kanon thought that they would love her and be her friend if she kept doing them and ignored the minority who wanted her to stop, unable to realize those plants were just taking advantage of her for their own personal benefit until all of them abandoned her. Even the majority of them who did know about it refused to help anyone else or do anything about it, nor did they try to aid any of the humans, because even if they weren't personally involved they did still partake in it.
It's why when you bring Kanon to her subordinates in the pocket castle she's immediately cheerful and tries to hang out with them until all of them start trying to run away from her or make excuses to not be around her. The only exception is the Malboro Girl, who does genuinely still like Kanon, but Kanon has to scatter pheromones to be around her due to the stench. MW!Plants pretty much crashed their species reputation overnight.

The humans were the ones who ran them out of town, iirc, not Sariela herself. Several humans even vandalized the other plant girl homes; one of them also salts all the flowers at the Aralune's inn out of spite even though she's innocent. In all fairness as well, it's worth remembering no real human citizens lived in Sariela's jail city and Sariela herself points out she and her angel's have also done a lot of horrendously cruel things.

The point is that by the time of the union, as someone else mentioned prior, characters start getting judged by what they do AFTER it, not what they did before. The plants are not judged for their actions in the MW, it's specifically what they were trying to do after they took over the city post-merge that got them kicked out. By comparison, Sariela and her angels never once even tried to repeat the death camp, nor did any of them justify it either, and Sariela also tried to save the city from Kanon and was backstabbed by Gabriella (who also abandoned her entire kingdom to fucking Hiruko when she did so and it's made extremely clear it's her actions post-merge when there's no excuse or justification for her stupidity anymore that are why everyone hates her so much).

It's not favoritism if the plants were the only repeating offenders.
