Sonic is a "Cartoon Mascot", he is the cooler Mickey Mouse.

The core appeal of Sonic is his visual design which is geared for action & adventure, and this is further emphasized by the vast of characters & the world itself. It's basically made to be a really cool heavily-anime influenced cartoon, like the Sonic CD opening/ending, the Sonic OVA or even the Sonic Unleashed opening.

Honestly, this -should- be the case for most Mascot Platformers, because they are -Mascot- platformers. Because the other side of this truth is that a "cartoon mascot" series with such vibrant and iconic characters is the perfect action-adventure platformer video game as well. Hence why Mickey Mouse & SpongeBob have both stepped into the medium as well.

So, to say that Sonic is "fundamentally better as a cartoon than as a "game" is only half-true. What I'd say is that the cartoon side of Sonic is the strongest CONCEPT, but the weakest EXECUTED. What should make Sonic work as a cartoon should ALREADY be visible in the games themselves. If they aren't, that just signifies a deeper issue with how this franchise is handled.
