For Ian in PoPT, it was a bit of a weird process. I needed him to be able to ride something and I wanted something that could use Grass moves that wasn’t Gengar (cuz Gengar’s too strong desu). The Bulu blessing idea came not long after and it really helped the whole story grow (pun slightly intended). The Fire Type was originally gonna be a Magmortar but it just didn’t fit right with what I was doing. Pyroar ended up taking the spot after the title came in (gives the right regal flare). Although Pyroar will get replaced eventually I seriously needed Blastoise for “The Plunge” chapter, everything else came after. Also gave “rival” vibes to Ian that I wanted even though the Squirtle line is fucking based.

Tyrunt was legitimately too fun to brainstorm, and once I got the whole Alpha thing down I started having too much fun with it. Alolan Sandshrew/Sandslash was just a placeholder for half the story but now it’s a permanent staple cuz it’s just too much fun to write battles of. Morgrem is probably what I got the biggest plans for long term and could be my most controversial choice all things considered.

Sneasel because I like Sneasel and the MC having a Sneasel was originally a core concept of a fic alongside pokemon ecology and genetics. While the other Pokemon I've thought of giving the MC are a combination of ones that'd cause conflict or are also related to pokemon science.
Clair has a Growlithe because I wanted to give her a pokemon that seemed reasonable for a rich girl to have, but isn't hampered by having a weak first stage like Horsea and can be evolved easily. She also has an Arcanine in Stadium an Ampharaos and a bunch of other pokemon. Ampharos will probably appear later.

Rayquaza is so pathetic lmao, kinda hard to see it as this super boss now, foxfucker will just beat it down then rape it now

When I was making Kuzey I wanted a partner for him that would fill a little brother role, who could contrast his more timid personality and be all the ego and bluster of the pair. And since I was setting as being from Paldea, out of all the new Pokemon there Charcadet felt like the best fit for that. It also helps being a more vaguely humanoid Pokemon that can emote, communicate, and act in roughly the same manners as Kuzey, so they can roughhouse and mirror movements with one another and it feels closer to siblings than, like, a pet.

His other Pokemon, though most aren't revealed yet, were also to highlight other aspects of his personality. Phylla the Bulbasaur is a bit of a spoiled child, and is there to showcase his ability as a caretaker of Pokemon.

Herri and Mia had a lot of thought put into theirs too but I basically can't comment on anything about them without it being a massive spoiler, excluding Yayamaskaa, who is 100% a thing because I imagined Herri posing with a Runerigus and it looked really cool.

This leads into a question of mine actually, something I was told when I was younger writing fanfic, and got brought up now writing my current stuff, is people have said I have a tendency to write official characters "as if they're still in their show."

I have a little trouble explaining it because I'm not sure I understand what they're saying myself, but to summarize the thought seems to be even though I'm writing the characters in more serious and mature situations I still write them with the same spirit, or whimsy I guess, as if they were the actual characters from the source material placed in new scenarios.

And what confuses me is, is that not what everyone does? I know reinterpretations are fun of course, but to me the fun of an official character appearing in a fanfic is to see how this familiar character would behave in an unfamiliar situation. You'd want it to be ABOUT these characters you grew up with and love, and not a different person with the same name, right?

Yeah, As someone who has a dislike of shallow and poorly written Isekai/SI stories in the Pokemon world, the idea of a Pokemon Isekai story but done in a Konosuba style teases me when I'm having writer's block with my current WIP. Here are some of the ideas I've toyed around with:

>The protagonist has meta-knowledge, but whenever it comes to actual locations from the games and where valuable items were, they're not there. Maybe even there's a trap instead.

For Crystal Light:
-Blastoise = Fighter
-Hitmonchan = Black Belt
-Chansey = White Mage

-Wol, Garland, and Sarah are this world's Blue, Red, and Green so they each get one of the Kanto starters. Jane gets Pikachu for Yellow to complete the gen 1 starters.
The wild mons they encounter are based on the actual random encounters of the area they are currently in from FF1. The Impidimps were Goblins, the Rapidash was a Crazy Horse, the Marowaks are Skeletons, the Onix is a Giant Worm, etc...
Each of Astos's pokemon correlates somehow to his story, and several are from the Hoenn region because Elfland's pokemon population is mostly Hoenn pokemon. Most are also dark types since he is a dark elf. Absol being his ace is foreshadowing disaster, Spiritomb represents the loss of his people, and Hypno is the odd one out of his team because he specializes in sleep curses.

An idea I got from reading Hyphen wanted me to see something with self aware pokemon that has a negative opinion of humans being brainwashed or indoctrinated using friendship raising items like the Friendship or Luxury ball creating an environment inside that indoctrinates the pokemon. The sound of a soothe bell alters their mental state, vitamins, rare candies or other drugs to increase their compliance. Pokemon 'salons' which are actually brainwashing parlors. Pokemon not being able to control their positive reaction to certain stimuli like flavors of berries or smells and being conditioned to like their trainer. Super training made to increase compliance in unruly pokemon. Add onto that some intelligence drain.
They can't be animal-like pokemon, part of the fetish here is the pokemon in question, maybe Astra from Hyphen, being comparable to humans but not being able to overcome the circumstances of their birth as a pokemon. If they have a pokemon village like from Hyphen, they're 100% betraying it.

I think Crystal Light fits your original description. It's the world of Final Fantasy 1, which is pretty much just legally distinct classic Dungeons and Dragons, but with pokemon instead of monsters. So you got sword and board knights, damsels in distress, potion merchants, hedge witches, dark wizards, and ancient evils all tightly incorporated with living alongside pokemon. Yes, the majority of battles are an everybody participates affair. The pokemon are party members equal to the human cast, and battles tend to become chaotic brawls with every pokemon and human character fighting. The pokemon are the power houses of course so the humans tend to be more supportive like the MC being a tanky knight who uses his shield to block blows when he can. I'm contemplating continuing my work about Pokemon Shifters. I've framed it as a Fantasy Setting written by someone who lives in the Pokemon World as an excuse to do whatever the fuck I want. Within limitations.

What should the explanation for Pokemon Shifters be?

If I go this path, powerful Shifters will have advanced forms based on Past Paradox Pokemon, with a Shifter who can assume the shape of Koraidon being their one true leader (with three tribes based on the Paradox Johto Beasts), and the civilized, advanced humanity will steal their powers and integrate it into their tech to create Past Paradox mons in the form of mech suits and drones. Terastalization is a thing that plays a part too.

Shifters can do either full or partial transformations, the latter normally being a result of their transformations influencing their "default" forms to some degree so they may manifest tails or animalistic ears or whatnot because their control of the energies that allow transformation aren't too perfect.

Shifters can indeed transform into multiple Pokemon species, with some restrictions such as how new transformations they acquire must have certain similarities with existing ones, such as sharing a type, or being a regional variant of. In their human/humanoid forms, Shifters can use weakened versions of moves of all their transformations, though they can be made to be stronger if more transformations have the same moves, but are locked into specific moves/movepools as certain transformations.

In the current version, when an existing transformation evolves, it stays as is until the next evolution with no devolution. Some of my main cast members were exceptions to this rule due to the nature of how their transformations worked. I am contemplating changing things and allowing all Shifters to potentially evolve and devolve at will by controlling their energies. (Where if a Shifter has access to a Stage 3, assuming the form of a Stage 1 is "holding back" or it might be possible that they have been weakened and cannot unleash their full power)

So, it's all comes down to which gimmicks to use; Terasilization or Mega Evolution. I go with Mega Evolution as it applies to life itself, with the guardians being the Aura Trio of Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde. The problem with guns in Pokémon is that most use real life models instead of something closer to their world/technology, why waste resources with lead bullets when they can just use energy weapons with various effects?

Lead is so common and easy to work with that even prehistoric people knew about it.
It takes very little resources to work with lead. It's as easy as milking a cow because all it takes to extract lead are some ore, commonly silver, and a campfire. And what you're left with is a heavy soft metal that you can shape into any form and will never rust or tarnish.
I can't imagine that type energy would be even easier to extract and contain for usage.

The only depiction that truly captures the heroism only a midget can achieve.

But for real, that is tight as hell. Admittedly in my head I imagine all the characters pretty anime style, though I have considered drawing the cast in Sugimori style for fun I also don't want to have any official depiction of Wol because I love seeing different interpretations of the same character that people come to. He has very All Might energy here. Honestly, this expression works really well for a scene in the latest chapter. Really captures a 'exhausted but satisfied' look on his face. Very radical. I've been considering linking the Hitmonchan art to the chapter it's associated with, and I might do the same with this if you're cool with that. Someday, when I stop being so lazy.

Too many? In Hyphen's case the amount we currently have. I didn't mind training in Spice and Fox since I was invested in the characters. But aside from some stuff relatively early on or when she captures them, Astra's pokemon are generally not important.
As I said, the Granite Cave arc removed all of them from play and it was the better for it. I'm just not invested in Astra's because they aren't characters and the narrative has done it's best to make it clear that Astra doesn't *NEED* to become champion to make sure her village is safe. It's both too much effort and too little simultaneously, especially since she's still pretty young and even if she evolves into a Gardevoir, Steven still has a lot more experience at being champion and unkown to Astra, is completely willing to help. Sure Astra *should* train, but in the long term her emotional growth and connection to Brendon, May, and Steven is way more important than giving names to her pokemon which as I've said, aren't even really characters. Ironically enough the fic with a pokemon protag, hasn't made me invested in the pokemon she keeps.
Aside from that, this doesn't meaningfully contribute to dealing with any of the threats. Human mad scientists, the evil granny, or whatever Aqua and Magama are getting up to.
Honestly, I'd prefer a montage instead, and maybe some more politics.
In short, make me care about your pokemon journey and pokemon. Then I won't mind training chapters.

I think that Hyphen's situation is funnier from a story perspective, Silver is a jerk, but Astra is literally a pokemon and Hyphen is ostensibly about the relationship between humans and pokemon. In fact, Brendan's Whismur or May's Lombre is probably more important to the relationship between humans and pokemon than Grovyle, Nincada, Maril, or Swablu. Maybe Aron is important but he's also the newest gotten just at the end of Granite Cave, and is subsequently only a little more of a non non-character than Astra's shiny Swablu.
This is sort of if like Ash was in Silver Eyes, had the same Mewtwo Genes powers and was involved in the plot. But never did anything important and his trauma with the experiments are never addressed.

On that note, I only thought about it once I started reading the Giovanni/Matori PoV, but the narrative voice is very samey, not only that but despite Red being the default narrative voice it's kind of a weird choice to make him so wordy and so keen on exposition when Red's one defining character throat is that he doesn't talk a lot. Matori is similar in that she's quiet but she yaps the narration inner scene, which is third person limited to her perspective, is so loquacious and talks so much about how cool she is and how she could totally kill Giovanni, it makes her really seem like a Chuuni dork.
On the other hand Gary's narration was actually a bit stand out, but that was more so because of how totally straight he is and his tendency to break out into freestyle rap about how much he loves his Pokemon.
Also, making the Ainu freeman and having them talk in broken English is a very weird choice. Especially since Brock talks normally when he's in character and the first mention we have of the Ainu when we see their section of town is that they're no different from anyone else.
Also this is another fic that has Mr Fuji slander, not only that but it has Mr and Dr Fuji as separate people as well!
Kind of makes me want to see a recursive fanfic where another, more subdued set of protagonists sees Red and Blue from an outside angle, or gets Matori talking, and the more subdued cast is just flabbergasted by how these people think and act. You can really tell this was written by a 14 year old, especially with the author's conception of 16 year olds and also the insecure heterosexuality.

Thanks, I just finished Pride chapter and will move onto the chapter Character Assassination next. Game of Champions is so off and interesting that even when I find something cringy I only find myself putting it down for a couple of days.
Still it's inspiring and I like some of the ideas it has.
Somtimes it can be pretty funny, like Matori going

For PoPT it’s a combo of both. Plumeria’s squad definitely is the main group of principle characters I focus on since the scale is really large and it’s a miracle that readers can keep of track of just the squad honestly.

Certain characters jumped up in importance early on like Sophocles/Slugg and Mina. I figure they’re easier for readers to remember. Guzma, Rook, Tom, and Stompz are really the only others I bumped up in prominence. During the chaos happening in the past few chapters in the story I could’ve had four or five different POVs of things going on but I just stuck to two POVs because then it would’ve been 4-5 chapters long instead of 2. The story could go crazy in scale if I let it so I really try to cut where I can. Prolly cut too much stuff fleshing out Guzma in the lead up to these chapters but that’s probably the biggest flaw of mine I’ve run into.

Well you don't want to bloat your story too much. Besides adding a PoV doesn't have to be a big thing, if you *really* need Guzma's PoV for something in particular but not the story as a whole, you can just make him a one-off.
Like in seeing how other people butter him up and manipulate his ego.
