Hooking the controller inputs to the rpi will require reverse engineering and electronics work. The rest may be easy if you use off-the-shelf stuff built to use rpi's gpio. But then you'll have daughterboards or bulky connectors that won't fit in the enclosure.

Anbernic has gone down hill recently. The 477M is really niche, you have to want a powerful 4:3 horizontal over anything else. Otherwise, their own 476H is better. It's cheaper, lighter, and has analog triggers. But even the 476H is just okay, mostly because the ergonomics are awful. The flat bar design makes no sense for handhelds with screens bigger than ~4 inches.

Verticals have two things going for them. One, they're nostalgic. And two, they can be more compact. But they always have the downsides of poor ergonomics (top-heavy, narrow grip) and display limitations (generally no wider than 3:2).

Cheap verts make sense because they're portable and give you that retro feeling. Mid-tier verts can make sense if you value the form-factor. But expensive verts are a waste of money. The ergonomics of a powerful vert with sticks will always be worse than a horizontal. And on top of that, you're stuck with a 4:3 display on a device than can handle 16:9 content.

You can justify something like the Retroid Pocket Classic if you really want a fancy vert experience, but the RG-477V at twice the price is a stupid waste of money.

Just buy a thor.

How well does game native support steam achievements? It's not a huge worry of mine, but I played a game for two hours at work and when I got home and logged into the game through steam one of the achievements I should have gotten didn't pop. Like I said it's not a major deal for me, but it got me wondering about Gamehub and Game Native lite.
