Pretty great game, got hundreds of hours in the various mods which are great. I don't think I ever even played it vanilla. Fatherland, Kaiserreich, FODD are some of the best.
It's pretty dated though and missing a lot of QoL. The constant tech team assignment and unit stack splitting are two big pains I remember which HoI3 massively improved on. Also the limited province density meant that combat was kinda boring, big space program doom stacks smashing into each other basically, there wasn't much blitzkrieg potential. Again greatly improved by 3 but that one had so many provinces the modding became too difficult. All it needed was better peace mechanics and a few nice mods taking advantage of them. Underrated game really, the UI is possibly the best in all of Paradox I think.

It's either this or 3, depending on who you ask. 3 has too much for the AI to handle and has crashes and save corruptions often, but has the most advanced features of any HoI game. DH is simpler, but runs stable. You may also enjoy Arsenal of Democracy.

I like adding complexity, but research is way too slow, and adding a hundred techs with no additional tech slots makes it functionally useless. The new map colors are shit and the music is broken. It's a shame, I really wanted to like it. The new units were good at least. I wish more work went into continuing to refine this engine instead of the garbage interface of HOI3.
