I believe they traced over a Koikatsu model. You can generally tell a KK model because of the shape of the head and face, as well as the way it renders. Koikatsu is a porn game with a built-in character designer and 3D rendering studio, so a lot of people use it to recreate anime characters. It's made by the same company that made Honey Select 2, which is the core to my game. Granted, I tend to cook at a pretty professional level because I've been at it for nearly a year.

Most sensible people don't mind using references. However, tracing anything is really only accepted on lower-effort effort stuff like edits. Also, it depends on how "complete" the reference material is. A blank 3d model for anatomy/lighting or a ref sheet as a color guide won't cause problems because the artist does stuff on top of that.
