I'm kinda worried that he doesn't. Not because the quality isn't there cuz I think it is. I think his problem now is that there's way more quality at the top now and it's gonna be that much harder to rack up the wins he needs.

I don't get all the hemming and hawing over this nonsense I've barely been following for 5 months and it was immediately obvious that anything occurring outside of basho is just half-assed because even when they half-ass is for 0 stakes people still end up getting hurt.
and it's night and day, you can tell when these guys are trying and when they're not at a glance.
what we see outside basho just simply doesn't matter at all whether it's jungyo or foreign exhibition or the practice sessions, it's all just excuses to sell some off season tickets and make JSA some revenue. Maybe at most you'll see someone injured might still seem very injured or something but as far as the "results" go they don't matter because they aren't on the record and the rikishi all know it.

Hmmm I guess since the new zuna would be Y2eYO that would add up, but knocking Zak down to west on a kachikoshi feels like bad voodoo, though when Kakuryu was promoted to the third zuna they straight up unbalanced the banzuke by making him east instead of west so like I dunno I guess so.

>>252581

Sorry I should clarify, I meant an odd number of yokozuna and only one ozeki is when the lone ozeki was O1w. Last time there was odd yokozuna and three ozeki, the first two ozeki were O1e and O1w and the third was O2w.
>>252584
>it would be unthinkable to "demote" a yokozuna simply because there were too many men at ozeki.
They don't actually care that much for sanyaku ranks. All yokozuna are equal, all ozeki are equal, all sekiwake are equal, all komusubi are equal, who get the 1e slot is just who had the better result last basho (excluding recent promotions, so Aonishiki is O1w because he's a new ozeki even though he performed better than Zak). It's only for maegashira that they'll nitpick over a single rank and east vs. west.

And yet he consistently bottles it and fails to win cups. Hoshoryu is a better wrestler than Onosato, but Onosato wins where it counts and doesn't drop as many matches against weak opponents, so Onosato completely overshadowed Hoshoryu in 2025. Hoshoryu is his own worst enemy.

I'd take Hakkaku's advice and commentary with a handful of salt given that his stable is so mediocre. Dude has no idea about coaching or assessing talent.
Horse doing his usual tryharding in practice to inevitably be followed by inability to follow up in competition. Nobody cares if he wins when his is going all out in practice while everyone else is chillaxing giving a 75% effort like you're supposed to do in a practice session.

Between Kotomitsuki's M2e yusho in September 2001 and Kyokutenho's M7w May 2012 yusho, not a single yusho was won by someone below the rank of Ozeki. And of those 69 basho, only 9 would be won by an Ozeki who wouldn't progress to Yokozuna.

I wonder how many good colligate sumo wrestlers decide not to go pro because they don't wanna become fatties and ruin their physique. That and the shit pay until you reach salaried rank must be a deterrent for collegiate wrestlers

I'm moreso talking about the buff looking ones. I saw a YT vid today of some buff dude beating Onosato. According to the comments, apparently he's a teacher now.
An aside, I only realized Mitakeumi was part Filipino until I Google searched him. But looking at him with short hair, it's obvious that he is.
>>

>Hosh has a bad knee and a wrapped up toe
>Onosato has a bum shoulder
It's realistic that both Yokozuna pull out this basho. I'm betting at least one of them actually does. This means Aonishiki can pull off two in a row That wouldn't be enough for Yokozuna right? Since both yuusho need to be as Ozeki? Or would the JSA count the Nov basho as a yuusho equivalent?

It's Onosatover, isn't it. Kisenosato won't let him fight in January. Honestly I didn't realise just how bad the injury was, figured it was just a twinge. Dan is genuinely in with a shot at Yokozuna if he can keep improving since Onosato is the only guy to really give him problems.
>Atamifuji says he has a newfound love of English tea
I believe in the Adamisu picture he had a cup of Starbuck's English breakfast? It's decent, though it's a shame he couldn't make it to a Whittard's to buy something a bit more robust. Maybe I should see if I can send a package of various teas to Isegahama for him.

>>
>>
>>252770
Dan will absolutely not be promoted with a single yusho at Ozeki. It could be the most dominant zensho the JSA has ever seen but it simply wouldn't matter because two yusho at Ozeki is a hard rule. One can be a strong yusho equivalent (see: 13+ wins) if the JSA feels like it, but nothing Dan does could make him Yokozuna for March.

No, I personally knew he could be promoted but it would likely take 12 wins and possibly a yusho to do it. Teru's first Ozeki promoted started at M2 and was only 33 wins, and that's when the Sanyaku was larger so M2 was even lower relatively.

>Hoshoryu will likely never have a better career win percentage than Onosato
What a stupid comment. Many active rikishi have a better career win rate than Hakuho. Hakuho's career win rate was 82.7%. Right now Dan's is 91.3%. Kazuma is at 93.9%. Win rates are fleeting and in the moment. A rikishi can be mediocre for a long time then suddenly hit their stride, making their earlier poor win rate completely irrelevant.

When you actually look at it, most Makuuchi guys spent a lot of time grinding their way up. Sato and Dan are huge outliers.

Onosato and Dan are not comparable, Onosato was a tsukedashi, its common for those guys immediately level up to Juryo. Someone climbing from the bottom rung to the top without ever faltering even slightly is unheard of. Dan's early career trajectory is an outstanding feat which will probably never again be matched. Even the most dominant yokozunas were never capable of doing what Dan is doing, but if you want to watch the next guy to have super hot start to his career to see if he can equal Dan, Kaki's makushita debut is worth paying attention to. Going for his 4th consecutive yusho at Ms21e

Onosato was a tsukedashi because of his amateur career, but lets not act like Dan was getting into sumo with zero amateur experience of any sport that translates over to sumo. The fact that he's been getting guy's backs so much goes to show that he didn't start from zero.

heres the storyline, Onosato goes kyujo, Kotozakura goes 14-1 losing only to Aonishiki, then loses in a playoff to him. In March Theres a triple playoff between Zak, Onosato and Dan. Zak wins and theres a double zuna promotion.

How come they always say "my body is moving well" or "my body isn't moving he way I want it to right now" and they never say "my body is working fine but my brain isn't working right" or something to that effect. something must be lost in translation, if not its weird how they consider their brain and their body to be separate entities
>>
>>
>>252923
They do, it's whenever they talk about their technique. The three pillars of sumo are body, technique, and spirit, with technique being mental. If their brain isn't working right then it's their technique that's off and they're not able to do their style of sumo.

they're taught phrases for media. "doing my way of sumo" is another well-known example. They get taught all kind of shit in sumo school, including biology class, how not to impregnate the first fan-girl they meet, to regularly jerk-off etc.. There was a document about this, I think it was during the time when Akiseyama was joining.

Reminder that Tamawashi has kinboshi against Hakuho, Harumafuji, Kakuryu, Kisenosato, Terunofuji, and Onosato. The only yokozuna he hasn't beaten is Hoshoryu, who he's 0-3 against as a yokozuna. There was a window where he could've faced Asashoryu but never went on a yusho run to match that high up the banzuke, and by the time he made it to the joi Uncle had retired.

Kise seems to have had a fairly uneventful pro sumo career as Higonoumi. Ms60TD to Juryo in 3 basho, remained a sekitori for a decade but never touched sanyaku, and retired when he lost sekitori.
I knew the shikona Higonoumi rang a bell so I double checked and yeah, Akebono obliterated him in his final yusho.

You only hate Shishi because he is White. He doesn't actually display any dumb traits, in fact that twerking tachiai he invented or perfected was substantial proof of his creativity and guile and smarts, the JSA had to ban it because it was giving him advantage they considered unfair even though it wasn't against any of the written rules. If it had been in an American sport they'd have had to let him do it or make it into a Wilt Chamberlain situation where one guy is dominating so they write a new rule to prevent overly one-sided competition.
The one who displays what seems to be genuine dumbness is Onosato, inability to control the panic pull-fight or flight instinct seems to be a sign of an immature undeveloped mind, a stage someone in their mid twenties should be long over.

Imagine a different timeline where he wasn't a douche, didn't get ejected from the sport and Hakuho retired with maybe 20 yushos and no swelled head and Asa was the guy with all the big records.
Asa getting canned is the only reason Hakuho became the GOAT, its a huge * on all his records and nobody ever talks about it, like its a taboo subject or something.
>>
>>252961
Uncle won his first 20 yusho in the space of 26 basho while it took Hakuho 28 to achieve the same. Hakuho was the flame which burned for longer, but Asashoryu was the flame which burned brightest. His brute violence and indignation were something else.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>252963
There is no guarantee that Asa would've been content to shirk bashos for Mongolian soccer matches if Hakuho formally usurped his position as top guy, Asa might've gotten competitive and doubled down on training in order to keep Hakuho in check, or he might've intentionally injured Hakuho to keep him down.
Asa getting kicked out made Hakuho's life easy, Kisenosato's injury also helped make Hakuho GOAT, so did Harumafuji's ejection.
Hakuho has such good luck with his major competition dropping out the sport that its a surprise there isn't a popular conspiracy theory in which Hakuho isn't the Tonya Harding of sumo

Asashoryu and Hakuho spent two and a half years together as double yokozuna. It's not like Hakuho got promoted and Asashoryu was immediately kicked out. In that time frame, Hakuho had 9 yusho to Asashoryu's 5, 213(+1) wins to Asashoryu's 145(+1), and was 8-5 over Asashoryu head to head. Hakuho was clearly the dominant of the two.

If Dan makes yokozuna and the two spent two and a half years as yokozuna together where yokozuna Hosh lost every match to yokozuna Dan then I would not expect Hosh to suddenly magically kick into an extra gear and start dominating Dan out of nowhere.

According to the latest weigh in, Ura is down to 134kg now which is a significant downsize compared to his peak. You'd think he'd be getting more acrobatic and tricky to match with his decreasing size, but somehow he's been relying on oshi and doing better than ever. He's always been surprisingly heavy for a little guy, but now he's more in line with the others that are his height.

With this new injury woe, I think it's best to swap out Hosh in my stablemasters picks.
I was already prepared to have Onosato sub for him in the event of a kyujo but now it's looking guaranteed so I won't waste a slot.
The question is who to pick instead. Onosato, the obvious choice, yet also with a kyujo possibility. Could we possibly bet on Kotozakura? Maybe...maybe.
I think I'll take 'Sato and Zak as sub.

zero, teru and hosh were two incredibly weak yokozunas, so their eras were full of a bunch of Mrankers taking home cups, but mægashira yushoes are normally incredibly rare. of course yokozunas as weak and ineffective as teru and hosh are supposed to be very rare as well, but its no mere coincidence that the rarity of mægashira yushoes & weak zunas coincide

Extrapolating things that happened in the past won't help you in when the present is full of unusual circumstances. Right now we're looking at
>Onosato kyujo
>Hoshoryu kyujo
>Dan on yusho/Ozeki hangover
Who else near the top has the consistency to challenge for the yusho? It's literally no one. Asanoyama has gone 12-3 twice in Juryo, and the bottom of Makuuchi isn't much better. I could honestly see a 13-2 out of Asanoyama this basho. If his two losses come early enough that it stops him being put against Sanyaku we could be looking at a repeat of Kotoshoho except from someone who isn't a useless shit. Honestly if the bookie's odds on Asanoyama don't reflect how good he actually is, then he's literally free money. Him or Dan will walk this yusho.

I think glass makes sense. Hard rubber mallet seems too similar in hardness to packed in clay, they probably want something that's harder than clay but also needs to be perfectly smooth and cheap and light. Wood tool would probably need to be highly specialized you'd probably need something with a rounded flat edge like a bottle anyway, so might as well use something already bottle shaped. Metal obviously will just break it.

Sumo is the antithesis of anime.
Sumo is also clearly the superior of the two.
Anime is always trying to force it's way into sumo, on mawashis or in mascots or in any other way they can think up, but it never sticks, never makes sense, everyone always sees the mixing of the two as a stupid joke at the expense of anime.
Sumo never bothers to or even thinks of trying to force an association between itself and anime.
Sumo is confident and proud, anime is desperate, weak and cringe.

You're both wrong. Modern sumo cliches and modern shonen cliches are both modern, one didn't lead to the other. Both of them descend from much older and more generalised traditions. Sumo and anime aren't particularly closely linked, certainly not to enough of a degree that one would be strongly influenced by the other. Sumo in anime generally takes the form of quick, casual references, and anime in sumo is, as Anon said further up, one of many things that occasionally appears on kesho-mawashi. You can assume that a sumo wrestler has seen anime and that an anime character has seen sumo, but that's about it.
