I don't mind how things ended up going here but I often think about how the manga really could've set itself apart from other romcom's, if after making the promise and establishing this obstacle that they need to get past before they can commit to a relationship due to their lack of confidence, they got caught up in their carnal desires and kissed, had sex (optional) and established their relationship right here.

Their characters have developed so much, both of them, especially Naoto should have enough confidence to not need to rely on something silly such as getting to the top of the mock exam.

Would've been subversive and surprising in a good way I think.

I think this is very fair criticism. It would have caused some backlash for sure, but all bold moves in storytelling do. However I can't blame 774 choosing not to go there in his first ever serialization.
