This is 2009, about four years before that happens. I don't think many of these stories are direct responses to events in his life, but a more general "his mood had darkened due to many things going on irl and therefore so did the tone of the stories"

IIRC we haven't seen him waste a kid yet, and the dark gods have been generally easygoing towards actual innocents in their depictions. Healing the one in the Jizonobu story (gods, not Jei that is), then him taking Keiko in, even treatingYukichi"normally" rather than cutting him down. IMO you can interpret either way. Killing the whole family is more impactful but there's enough wiggle room to take it the orphan route.

I post it later because it comes bundled with the Legends Saga book, and that's what Dharma did in the before-times. I also like having a dedicated thread to it because yokai are fun, but you're right it would fit here just fine. I'm really thinking of doing a proper chronological order next year.

Yeah, I understand the logic- it's a standalone story, etc. I guess the way it just makes most sense to me is to keep stuff like Space Usagi separate, but for stuff like this, might as well have it in in the correct place both publishing-wise and story-wise- since I now assume Stan intended for us to knowSasuke's backstorywhen we next see him
>>
>>
>>153218553
I always thought it was stupid that Usagi didn't just say "we're here because he cheated us out of TWO hundred ryo, you know" here. It would have made a lot more sense as a reason for them to just tap out.

The entire thing is less like a monster encounter and more like a gag fight out of Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness. It's actually pretty great and the fact that we have a peaceful ending with one of the yokai is pretty unique given how these usually go.

I've personally been holding onto the theory that he's not always been a good person, and this whole thing is a punishment because it was either quelling spirits or right into the deep boiler room of jigoku for all time.
It would explain why Shoki seems to be riding him with no breaks but it would also make an interesting mirror of Jei

Certainly Usagi's descendant, whether the others are also descendants or just coincidence or sort of reincarnations is ambiguous. Space Usagi established it first, that there's just "here's X character but the space version", and it's always never explained if, say, a Space Usagi version of Ishida (which IIRC is not a thing that happens, I'm using it as a random possible example) would be an actual Ishida descendant or if by sheer cosmic coincidence a similar guy with a similar look and name and personality just happened to develop by the time of Space Usagi

I still can never get over Keiko expression in that last panel. I like to think she is at the stage where she has started to be able to see Jei's good and evil herself and some serious shit just opened the door.
>>
>>153221835
I think she's permanently 'weird' at this point. Remember she was eating grubs and rotten food like it was fine cuisine while on the road and keeps going to where her Uncle is.
I think that's just her default expression now. She has a shamans eyes. Eyes that have seen too much.

>when the gods should be capable of making a new champion for every century.
To riff on this idea, maybe there is also alongside the guilt and atonement also an innate stubbornness in Sasuke's mortal character that draws him to Lord Shoki as well. Lord Shoki who in his mortal life as the failed scholar Zhong Kui beat himself to death out of sheer frustration and then resurrected himself out of a personal sense of obligation to his emperor to quell demons on his behalf. I like to believe that something similar to mantling from the Elder Scrolls is going on with Sasuke and Shoki, and eventually Sasuke himself will ascend and become a new incarnation of Shoki.

>There's got to be a reason Sasuke is doing this alone for centuries and maybe millennia when the gods should be capable of making a new champion for every century.
There's also the theory that Sasuke is grooming Usagi to be his replacement and/or partner. Usagi doesn't seem to be interested but if anyone could play the long game, it'd be Sasuke.

>it's got to be more than just that.
Does it, though? Japanese media is highly referential and I feel like people too often give it a pass for how unoriginal and derivative it can be. Just like how every 'geyser of blood' from anime can ultimately trace its origin back to that one scene from Sanjuro, or the famous 'Akira slide,' the stock 'samurai rubbing his chin with his arms inside his sleeves' might just literally be everyone thinking how cool Toshiro Mifune is and wanting to put that in their work.
>>
>>
>>
>>153217650
Yeah, I noticed it too. But it couldn't be Lord Araki's clan mon, the story itself makes it very obvious. Of course, very similar clan mons are not without precedent in real life, but I believe Stan just made a rare goof and reused the same mon. In the big poster I made the bottom line a little thicker to differentiate it from the Araki clan mon.

yeah I understand, especially with anons already blabering about the reveal at the end... one thing to consider is, yokai is some 70 pages and most storytimes are between 160 - 200. To continue the Miyamoto line, ghost Usagi is probably willing to point you towards some important historical sites or ninja bunkers.

One thing that really chaps my ass about the whole Inazuma subplot is how ultimately she didn't really DO a whole lot as Jei. Like, she was hyped up to be the strongest swordsman in the series, but as Jei she never actually fought Usagi himself iirc, which makes me wonder what was even the point of hyping her up like this. It's not like Jei's backstory hinged on Inazuma existing. At most she just fights Gen/Stray Dog, but even they they only survive though sheer plot armorand the implication that Gen is a Seed of Jei.
I get that Stan planned for her to die from that start, that I accept. But that just makes her feel even more of a waste by the end of it. Again, apologies for dragging this back up when we really should've moved on from this.
>>
>>
>>
>>153225538
I think what stan was going for with Inazuma was showing us this person of great skill and potential to reach greater heights that gets consumed by Jei and rotted away. She dies of a wound in a random building and Jei moves on. Inazuma gets no great final duel as herself or Jeizuma. Jei's a demonic killer but also a corrosive force that can undo even someone like Inazuma leaving behind only a broken husk.

I feel like there's some symbolism here with the point made of Usagi handing Kato his swords. A samurai's swords are his soul, and Kato starts his story serving Hell, having sold his swords to one of its masters. But with Usagi's influence he gradually develops more noble intentions, eventually being willing to sacrifice himself for someone else, and this selfess act is what allows Usagi to help Kato save his swords from Boss Higa, the "lord" of Hell.

Given how Usagi is unlikely to ever face off and personally end Hikiji, I have a theory on how that will be resolved.
Someone mentioned that he's based in part on Date Masamune, so what if Hikiji's ultimate fate is to get almost everything he wants?
Hikiji manages to climb all the way to becoming a respected elder statesman, but is "too important" to actually have much say in administration or policy. This would be enough for most people, but for someone as ambitious as he is, it is a special kind of personal jigoku to be so close to and so far from the true seat of power.

Some very talented female artists draw lots of TMNT fanart because "four buff (nearly) naked dudes with distinct personalities". They draw Usagi fanart because "bunny cute". They draw a lot of TMNT Rise and Samurai Rabbit fanart because "twinks". It just ticks all the boxes for horny girls. It helps that TMNT is not considered as a furry franchise by the general audience, despite absolutely being an anthro franchise.

I remember shilling Mayumi during the first storytimes, when almost nobody else cared. People liking her is one of my greatest achivement in these storytimes.

Jei will go down against old man Sasuke and Usagi's distant descendant
>I couldn't kill...THAT MAN...but I can kill YOU!
>demonic wolf spearman screeching
>Leave the boy alone, Jei!
>Sasuke! You're still alive after all these years!
>There is still one last evil for me to remove from this world!

Hikiji survives to become the dark emperor of space Usagi where Usagi reincarnates into a space opera version of himself to finally bring down Hikiji (let me dream). How dangerous of a combatant is Hikiji? Could Usagi beat him one on one?

To be fair, Feudal Japanese armies did this on the regular and the same fate would have befallen lord Mifune, if Usagi hadn't hidden his cranium in the woods.

Although, considering Mifune was a lord, they would have probably displayed his head more like this.
On an unrelated note, searching for a image of a severed samurai head sent me down a rabbit hole where I discovered a thousand year old samurai rebels head, spooking people around modern Tokyo area for centuries and doing all sorts of mischief, like killing a bulldozer driver during American occupation, for almost bulldozing his burial mound.

What the FUCK. I'm going to be honest, I was not expecting this story to pivot to supernatural stuff at all.
>>153217327
And here I thought Usagi was going to play matchmaker with the old people.

...huh. So I was actually right, in a way. Pretty great story regardless, though.

At first I thought nothing about it, but now, after re-reading the story so many times, whenever they refer to themselves as "human", it becomes more and more Silent Hill-y to me.
>A rabbit? Oh, so he looks like a rabbit TO YOU?

Huh, it's actually been a while since a horse showed up in this comic.

>a thousand year old samurai rebels head, spooking people around modern Tokyo
let me guess, it's Taira Masakado.
>Taira no Masakado was born and raised in eastern Japan. After leading a minor rebellion and assuming control of eight provinces in northern Kanto, Masakado declared himself the new emperor of Japan.
yep. and man did history do my boy dirty, the real story is a lot more complicated. easily recommend pic related if you want to know more:
>Even celebrated “rebels” like Masakado and Taira Tadatsune were more like unruly adolescents testing the limits of state patience than revolutionaries seeking to overthrow the state. Neither was willfully in defiance of central government authority—at least not initially. Their quarrels were local, not national; their insurgencies aimed at specific provincial officials and their subordinates and policies, not the national polity. And even after their actions rendered them state criminals, their first—and most enduring—instincts were to seek reconciliation with the state through the offices of patrons in the capital.

>TMNT is not considered as a furry franchise by the general audience, despite absolutely being an anthro franchise
Reptile focus makes it scalie. There's less overlap between the two groups than you might expect.
