Since nobody replied in the last thread, what does /frag/ think of Mancera? I haven't tested any of their perfumes yet, but reviews seem all over the place. Some people love them, others say they smell synthetic. I really don't want to spend €70 (5x 8 mL samples) on a bunch of overly sweet, synthetic scents.
>>18658342
No need to hoard full bottles like a nigger. A handful of solid go-to bottles is plenty. For the rest, you’re better off buying decants.

I think everyone would agree 10 bottles is a collection but I believe more than 3 is a collection. My logic is that the average person could easily end up with 3 fragrances through the years but after that it would require some intention. They could have a regular fragrance they wear all the time, their "elegant" going out fragrance, and their "expensive" special occasion fragrance. After that they wouldn't need more so it becomes a collection, it's not about utility anymore but about collecting.

>>18658453 Is accurate, with emphasis on the 10+ as opposed to the more than three. I say that only because I agree if you have more than 3 it means you’ve probably put in effort to get more than what you’ve been gifted, but I don’t think it’s enough to qualify yet. Splitting hairs, but if you haven’t hit double digits yet you’re still working on a collection - you’re not there yet. My two cents, but overall >>18658453 is very well put.

Am I retarded or do all the sites like Frag arica/Basenotes users have an extreme bias towards colognes being meant for winter? It's all Fall/Winter with Winter being the main season that is listed. Do most of these people just take anything warm or heavy and immediately slot it into that category? I understand how some colognes absolutely give off those vibes but it seems more a preconceived affectation as to what to expect from something in Spring or Summer. Even things I'd say are "neutral" in terms of season get pushed right into Winter.
I'll say it until I am blue in the face: I don't want to smell like a fucking orange all the time.
>>
>>18658192
>How do they make these
It's a composite. The bottle is a 3D scan, or light box image. The wood is real but then they textured on the burning bits. The lime is wax. The flowers are real. Then they composite all the images together with the model, and add a bunch of bokeh and the appropriate light source. A lot of car commercials you see where you're just looking at the car are 3D these days. Since you can perfect scans, and control the conditions and lighting exactly the way you want, there is always a 3D element. 3D scanning the bottle would be super easy. Hell, you can do it. Go on Temu and buy a hand scanner. They're expensive but not "expensive". A lot of people do this with 3D printing. They scan the original item, and then print out copies. It's very handy.

The only one worth your attention imo is the original edt. It is salty fresh, youthful but fairly fem leaning unisex iris.
Every other flanker and actually the original Uomo too are gourmand so meh, makes the edt the most unique in the line

Yes, but to answer your other question it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere, probably skewing the perception maybe?
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>18658622
>probably skewing the perception maybe?
I'd agree to some extent if it wasn't for these reviews being aggregated. That's the sticking point for me. Could it be that people buy a cologne because a smaller base has already established it as a Fall/Winter frag and then it snowballs? I'd buy that, and I can ignore it but it's nonetheless frustrating when so many colognes are are pigeonholed into 3 months out of the year. There's a singular cologne in my (albeit small) collection that doesn't fall into Winter, and I imagine the ratio might be similar for most people in this thread (10-15% aren't classified as Winter colognes).
>>
>>18658611
>>18658682
Are you asking why frags get rated as winter frags more than summer frags? or are you asking why winter frags are more popular than summer frags?
>>
>>18658708
The former. Look through your own collection, and I am willing to bet you have an extremely uneven seasonal distribution if you go by any of the sites that curate them. A lot of people here even admit to having 7-10 colognes and wearing a different one every day, but we also know there's effectively 0 chance if you were to put those against how they are curated by people that they'd all (or even mostly) be seasonally appropriate.

I did try Allure Homme when I was at the airport a couple weeks ago. It’s really not even remotely similar to the Sport. It reminded me very loosely of a crisper and more luxurious Lalique Pour Homme. If you like that style of fragrance I definitely recommend it, but I personally found it to be very tame overall. Didn’t try the Edition Blanche.

Oh on the contraire, I insist you buy it. Been eyeing a tester of Light Blue Intense that was $60 but it sold out :(, now I gotta get the new Light Blue 2025 instead which is currently the same price. Both excellent frags, tested them twice and I already know it's the citric love of my life, intense projects better.
>>
>>18658717
You mean the latter? You're right. First I'll say the best selling, mainstream frags are usually all-weather since they are for people with one or few fragrances. Weather specific fragrances are more common for hobbyists who have larger collections. Hobbyist on fragrance sites prefer complex, long lasting frags. Making unique and interesting fragrances that lasts for summer is much harder than making a long lasting complex winter fragrance. Fragrance hobbyists prioritize longevity and projection above all else, and that's less common in summer fragrances.
My collection is fall heavy, summer light, with spring and winter in the middle. There is a lot of overlap, some of my spring fragrances could be worn in summer and some of my fall fragrances could be used in winter.
How fragrances get rated on review sites they are either summer or winter on the extremes but some get both spring/fall for
moderate temperatures.

I am going to say or make a retarded observation:
>Making unique and interesting fragrances that lasts for summer is much harder than making a long lasting complex winter fragrance.
Would it not merely be as "simple" as creating a high concentration parfum and then applying it to your clothes? Or is there an industry dislike of the "just put it on your clothes, bro" solution.

Sorry, to clarify why you'd potentially want to do this (again, I freely admit to being wrong) is that the fragrances that are supposed to be for warmer weather don't tend to last as long. So the naturally obvious thing to do would be to put it on your clothes, and while I am certain that would increase the life of it, it'd still be worse than a similar frag designed for colder weather. To give it an even longer lifespan, you'd increase the concentration. Then, ultimately, the projection being decreased might not be such a terrible thing as we all agree being an overperfumed obnoxious ass is the opposite of what we should want.
Frankly, I'd take longer lasting colognes that don't fill the room over ones that fill the room but only stick around for an hour or two. Then again, I am speaking from personal taste: I've always, always, always hated colognes I can smell from half a block away. It's one of the reasons why I had a personal bias against them for an incredibly long time. I've got a very sensitive nose, and when a lot of people are wearing dogshit (or Axe bodyspray, but I repeat myself) it will dim your view of wearing cologne. I've only recently got myself out of that mindset, so I freely admit to being over here (pic related) in the graph, but I only bring this up because I think it's interesting to me, a novice. I clearly don't know a lot, and I'll only figure them out by testing different fragrances over time or doing more reading, but there is this observation that doesn't seem to have an obvious answer.
I appreciate this conversation because it's been quite enlightening to see how a particular set of biases among hobbyists versus casual people splits the crowd. I think what I really should try and look into it are fragrances that are classified as being for warm weather that aren't fruit.
>>
>>
>>
>>18658865
>we all agree being an overperfumed obnoxious ass is the opposite of what we should want
It's not binary, while it can be annoying to smell someone who put on too much cologne, some people just want to easily smell themselves through the day without having to sniff their arms or clothes. When you think of summer fragrances like the traditional cologne, they have lower concentration and that allows them to give you that nice projection. A high concentration summer cologne might be very muted and even on clothes that wouldn't be very popular with consumers.
I don't associate fruit as the main summer note, I think most people would say citrus. A popular fruit note for summer is fig. Looking through my collection I take back half the statement when I said it's hard to make unique and long lasting summer scents. Sure it's hard to make long lasting summer scents but there are so many unique and interesting summer notes. You can find notes like hay, tea, basil, bamboo, tagetes, etc.. There are also common winter notes that I would say are more interesting in summer fragrances like cedar, saffron, rose, and tobacco for example.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever be able to detach myself from "fill the room with my cologne" types from a boorish crowd. It's the more expensive version of spraying yourself down with Axe or the other 72 hour cans out there. Just gag inducing.
As for fruit, I should have been a bit more specific. A lot of the summer/warm colognes I've seen suggested here are citrus, and it's that association I despise. The best way I can describe it is "tourist". Someone in a past thread asked what to wear while in Florida, and it was just citrus. To me, that immediately made me pull away because that's very "tourist" in the sense that wearing an aloha shirt while in Hawaii. I live in Florida, and if I smelled someone wearing something citrus-y, I'd immediately assume they are from up north. That's also why I would never wear it. I also found that a lot of fruit (getting away from citrus for a minute) I smelled is too sweet or too mild. At least for me. I am probably off on this, but teas seem to be a decent pairing with warm weather since teas are very inoffensive, on the other hand the tea samples I smelled were far too neutral or mild; which I felt was a shame.
Your examples of saffron and rose are things I don't own (I haven't tried anything where the strongest note is rose), but are interesting ideas.

You spend too much mental energy on what others are doing and wearing. Every second you spend letting someone occupy your mind is time you lose focusing on yourself and your betterment. Citrus is in almost every fragrance, even the heaviest winter fragrances sometimes have them. It's usually a top note that dissipates quickly, the longer lasting citrus are usually synthetic modern compositions with other notes to bolster them. You're probably just have a distaste for modern fresh fragrances, not citrus itself. You should stop being so rigid and close minded. The only thing that matters in fragrance is if you like the scent or not. All our preconceived notions and personal rules do nothing but hold us back, believe me, we've all been there. The fragrances I enjoy today were not the fragrances I thought I would enjoy when I started, and some of the ones I don't enjoy are what I was exactly what I was looking for.

I got a bottle of Dior Cuir Cannage, I really like it but it's hard to recommend because it's not mass appealing, it's dated, and it's very "grandma's cosmetics". It starts very briefly with a bit of citrus and freshness, it's so brief that this is the first time I notice it and it's my third time wearing it. After that is a strong powdery iris with rose and jasmine, it would be impossible for me not to associate this with grandma's skin lotion. This is a leather frag but my nose is really weird with leather. I can get it in Fahrenheit and I find Ted Lapidus PH to be a hyper realistic leather but a lot of times it's just in the background, adding to the fragrance but not very noticeable. Even in fragrances that are really leather heavy, it can be less prominent to my nose. For me Cuir Cannage is mainly a powdery floral fragrance because the florals are way more prominent than the leather. The jasmine/rose combo made me recall Tauer's Le Maroc pour Elle but Cuir Cannage is much lighter and airy with the powderiness and a lower dose of jasmine and rose. Cuir Cannage has a lot of other facets as it develops. It has some animalics but not stinky or indolic, more like soft and warm that combine with the leather. You get a bit of smokiness, there is also some mild sweet florals that come and go, I also get a lot of birch after it settles down. I even get some booziness and herbal notes. The fragrance is intended to have both masculine and feminine aspects but it's not a sexy young couple, it's grandma and grandpa bickering on their way to church. The floral powderiness is loud and strong at first but the smoky soft birch wins in the end. I like it because it's so interesting with so many facets but for a lot of people it will smell dated. It lasts a respectable amount and the projection is very strong, almost shocking at first, for up to an hour, but you can still smell it for hours after it settles.
>>
>>18659144
Consistency of application. When I am testing fragrances I want (roughly) the same amount each time I apply it so I can compare accordingly. That’s much, much more difficult to do with a dabber. It’s also just fucking chintzy on LuckyScents part considering they’re probably the largest decant website out there.

I mean I guess. I don't notice a whole lot of variation in my own applications personally. I apply it in the same place, in the same way, every time. The only problem I've had is when I get all butterfingers and accidentally spill the whole thing on my hand and/or desktop mat.
Really if I get something from Luckyscent anyway it's something I only want to try once or twice at most anyway just to satiate the curiosity. So I'm not too worried if one wear is a little different from the next, that's part of the fun for me.

Just going to vent here about my recent experience.
Had a 2ml sample of DIA MAN that I really enjoyed so I decided to cop a full bottle. Read reviews how most Amouage's have been reformulated so I figured I would look for an "older" bottle, not exactly vintage, but just different from the newer packaging. I managed to find a UK made version on Facebook with the old box and decide to grab it (2018 bottle).
So I open it up and spray it and it smells kind of flat. The notes don't pop like the sample I had, everything is kind of melded together however in the sample, the vetiver was deeper and the peony and plum would pop, it was amazing.
I then contact the people I got the sample off and turns out its a 2022 batch.
So the older bottle I copped smells worse to the newer one. How the fuck is anyone supposed to figure out what bottle is good or not if there is stark differences between them all?
There are made in Oman versions and made in UK versions. Some people say the UK versions are stronger than Oman, this shit is all over the place. Am i supposed to gamble with every fucking bottle i purchase? Its fucking expensive.
I am fuming and this is such fucking bullshit, fuck Amouage.

My favorite is Penguin, a clean mossy leather scent, quite enjoyable. T-Rex is the most bombastic loud one they have and actually settles into a vanilla leather is the base, not unwearable like some people say. Harvest Mouse is a pleasant sweet hay scent. Rabbit is a sweet gourmand. Macaque Fuji Apple is decent, Orchid Mantis is an enjoyable floral aquatic, Koala is a nice minty, menthol-y tea scent, Musk Deer is a warm creamy musk.
They’ve got a lot of good scents, it’s a matter of whether you think they’re worth the price.

Essentially yes.

Welcome to frags. If buying a bottle of smelly water is a concerningly large purchase for you, perhaps you shouldn’t be buying it?
Also, why did you post with a picture of The Gay Dragon?

Sounds like you got fucked somehow, Anon. Where did you buy the bottle from? A lot of places will let you return them. Even a lot of dudes on eBay will let you return them (but they might not refund the whole purchase).

I don't do bottle purchases that often, its only when i'm 100% certain I will enjoy the scent and not get bored of it. Gay dragon is for attention.

Batch to batch variation, maceration, possible IFRA laws between manufacturer dates, and as minuscule as it may be, minute things like - air quality on the day of testing, skin chemistry, and even more long term olfactory fatigue.
They can all affect the perception of a scent, it’s why this is all so ephemeral and subjective.
>Gay dragon is for attention.
Fair enough.

I got it off Facebook, it had had the plastic still on with the sticker, it is 100% genuine. The seller probably wouldn't take it back since I opened it. The bottle i have is far more peony heavy, while the sample is more plum and vetiver, it also projects more than the sample. Maybe maceration will change it for the better but i'm not expecting it too. I've only had some air in it for two weeks.
Also blind bought pic related, will be back with a review.

I personally do not equate price to value, but if you’re just looking for the most expensive then I believe that would be Rive Gauche pour Homme.
Azzaro pour Homme is also a classic despite being cheap. You could get a vintage bottle of PRPH but the modern version isn’t wildly dissimilar either.
>>
>>18659544
Without a doubt, wildly overpriced.

Day Three is the only interesting niche one I recognize and you can just as easily get their $40 discovery set and test their whole line at your leisure.
Doesn’t mean the others are bad, just not ones I follow / sample. There’s some Anon that pops his head in once a year and comments about Vilhelm, but I also ways associated the brand with the Vilhelm Scream and so I can’t take it seriously.

Barely. Baccarat uses a base of notoriously inexpensive materials in very high amounts. The real deal will be smoother up close and have a bit more nuance as you get more familiar with that style of fragrance, but its one of those rare occasions where the original is so easy to make and copy that the dupe is really not that egregiously bad in comparison. If you like that, give Oud for Glory a try as well. Its the same base but with a darker twist.

Never tried the Klone copy, but I've tried many copies and I've found one by Fragrance World that I couldn't tell apart from the original.
The main thing about this frag imo is how airy and ethereal and odd it smells without becoming unpleasantly synthetic (like Ganymede for example), but the original doesn't have anything about it that smells better, higher end or higher quality than many clones.
>>18659592
Baccarat is the name of a company that produces fine crystal, it has nothing to do with the card game.
I also don't think it's a good bar/gambling frag unless you're a hot girl who's there to find someone to bring home.
>>18659544
Yes, though not as much as the contrarians in this thread would have you believe.
Because of their popularity you can find many copies/reps/dupes, and many of them are as high quality as the originals are.

I regret selling my bottle of Encre Noire. I’m thinking of maybe ordering some more goated cheapies once I finish acquiring a few more high end decants. What are some lesser known cheapies that are more on the modern side? I have tried almost all of the classics (polo green, lalique ph, lapidus, azzaro, versace, aramis, flannel, drakkar, aromatics elixir, youthdew etc). Looking for stuff thats a bit more light and understated and not your typical drugstore 80s powerhouse. I also don’t mind picking up more feminine or unisex leaning scents.

Narcissus is in yellow floral category. Don’t be mistaken by its white appearance. It smells a lot like ylang-ylang, but with fruitier undertones and is slightly metallic. H24 EDT has it. Think summery, dewy, less animalic than both jasmine and ylang

I bought Ultra Male because I tried it at the mall and really enjoyed it, the scent really grew on me otherwise I wouldn't have even considered a JPG. Now, I see everybody that talks about it mentioning "great clubbing frag" and whatnot, but I don't go to clubs so I have no idea what that means. Do you avoid frags because of their association with certain lifestyles? Can you really wear this stuff and not be associated with that vibe? I don't care if it's an "old men" frag or a "clubber", I just want to smell nice. I bought this thing for autumn, can't even really wear this rn because it's summer in the tropics, even thought about returning it to get Light Blue Intense instead but I got it on a great sale....

There is no evidence that it will do anything to you, you'd need a lot of exposure from Benzyl Salicylate in high quantities for it to matter. The other thing is that literally every single perfume house uses it. It can be sourced naturally, so even guys like Hiram Green can say their ingredients are all natural. It's not a synthetic, but it can mess with your hormones. Regulary drinking from heated containers with PVA or whatever is far, far worse.

Are you guys familiar with those Amazon return stores? Basically, they are stores where they sell junk people return at a fixed rate that lowers with each day. Some of them are scummier than others and don't respect the purpose of the store (their owners will have their employees pick out the good shit, and then give that to them, and then they'll sell a trickle of high value items at near MSRP).
I am bringing this up because I went to one about a month ago and they had nearly 100 bottles of Creed Aventus all stacked together for $12 bucks each. I was very tempted to buy some, but I also figured that there was a very specific reason why such a large quantity had been returned (they were counterfeits sold through a 3rd party and returned to Amazon). I sort of regret not buying at least a few, but then again, who knows what was in those bottles. They also had about just as many 1 Million Paco Rabanne bottles for the same price stacked next to them. It's too late to get them now (since it was a month ago), but assuming it was some sort of scam (hence the huge quantity of returns) what do you think was going on there?
>>
Anyone tried this frag? Just purchased it. Pretty excited. Mugler fragrances are sweet, edgy not-quite niche, not-quite designer. Teetering unique and mass appealing. Their funnest frags with the best packaging always get discontinued. Perfume is a luxury and it deserves to be a fun experience every time you put it on. I love their bottles so much.

Basically exactly what you described. Whether it’s a third party seller or some other fake business posing as a reputable retailer, they look legit to the untrained eye, that’s boosted by the fact they have large amounts of stock, shit gets sold, people realize it’s fake and return it / complain about the seller, Amazon pulls stock.

Yeah that's what I'm here for. I think I've tried enough frags to say for sure what my taste is but I also don't want to mismatch the vibe with what people expect of it, maybe I'm overthinking it. You can be the most open-minded person on earth and say that fragrances don't really have gender but if you smell a feminine frag on a guy it's gonna be a little weird, and that's the type of nosetwister that I'm trying to avoid. But maybe I'm paying too much attention to what others will think and should just wear what I like with confidence.
