Thread #77098980
"NIGGLES could be here" he thought, "I've never been in this distance race before. There could be NIGGLES anywhere." The cool wind felt good against his bare chest. "I HATE NIGGLES" he thought. Sweet Dreams are Made of These reverberated his entire car, making it pulsate even as the $30 baking soda circulated through his powerful thick capillaries and washed away his (merited) fear of zone 3. "With a car, you can go to any race you want" he said to himself, out loud.
Advice for new runners:
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week);
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months;
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest;
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural; and
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans).

Looking at run commuting when the weather breaks. It'd be five miles each way. I've been running about 6 months, was around 30 miles a week but the winter has really set in for about a month. I'm down to like ~10 miles a week. How hard do I have to build back up? Is this a stupid idea this early in running? I went for a run today and am noticeably worse than a few weeks ago. Is it over?

It's a great idea. Just start doing it once or twice per week and take it from there. If you have the option to cycle on the other days I'd do that. I got so fit from doing easy short cycles to work every day. You don't think it's much but it's building a massive base fitness when you are doing it for months and months.

>groin injury cost me a month of running
>put 20 pounds on
>slower and less fit than six months ago despite running 20-30 miles a week
>rained every day for two months
>been running for over a year and actually slower than when I started
>hate going outside because it's so grey and miserable
>never lose any weight
how do I start enjoying running again?
>>
>>

I've lost most of the weight, but pace still way down. My garmin doesn't give me the fast runs anymore (threshold, tempo etc. just shitty base runs), and running fast hurts my groin anyway.
My legs feel stiffer and heavier to lift. Maybe age is catching up with me, I'm in my 40s now.

Would it be possible to finish a 6 hour kind of event which is 3 months from now if I currently run 5 k 3 times a week? How should I prepare? Any experiences? My longest run is a half marathon from a few years ago.

Where I live there's a running track, so that's my usual go to place, however it's rather flat, so sometimes I run on asphalt to get some elevation from the hills in town. If the weather is super shitty I run on a treadmill.

European countryside with 50 years old asphalt roads, 200 years old stone paths, some dirt, some gravel, some trail, some of it inside towns and villages where the sidewalk is sometimes as bad as out of them.
Barely see anyone since I don't run on Sundays. It's nice.

I got a HRM 600 to have an accurate reading of my heartbeat for training, I’m 35 so substracting that from 220 and leaving it at 70% means the upper limit for zone 2 training should be 129 bpm, but after actually doing it this feels extremely slow, I was just slightly above the maximum and still doing a 9:40m/km pace.
Is it just me or do you guys go similarly slow? if I just keep going will I go faster at the same bpm? Sorry for the dumb questions I just got surprised by the results.

220-age is a population average but has so much individual variation it's useless. You need to do an actual max heart rate test and resting heart rate test and use the Karvonen heart rate reserve method, where zone 2 is 60-70% of the difference between max and resting.
I'm also 35 and have 189 max HR, 52 resting HR, so zone 2 by that calculation is 134-148, which feels pretty accurate.
But it's just as good or better to run by feel or the talk test.

Update on my running everyday challenge to motivate everyone, we are not giving up. It's slowly turning into running every other day, but looks like the pros here aren't running that much either so it's ok. I'm on something like 12 runs so far. Will try to keep it up for the next month too.
Legs were hurting, mostly the inside of my shins, tried other shoes, my legs were completely numb. One memorably shit day, I arrive to the park, already see a lot of idiots with their stupid fucking dogs. I run one lap, then one of the dogs runs to me and starts jumping on me and biting me. Still it didn't break me and I finished the run. Next day took a rest day, went to a Scitec shop I've been wanting to, bought an ALA expired in 2024 (that counts as a success for me).
My times have been improving, last week I broke the 30 minute barrier for my usual 4 km. Saturday was my first day I actually wouldn't have the time to run, but then I messed up and missed the next two days too. Then close to 28 minutes, and a colossal PB of 27:36, time to add more laps.
Took another Scitec shop adventure, this time the guy wouldn't give me the expired items even though there were a lot. Then later the cashier in Lidl messed up, had to call the manager and stuff. Troublesome day.
Main thing is, if anyone made it here. Today I ran 5k for the first time in my life. Perfect 28 min split at the usual 4 km, finished 34:50. Almost no pain in my legs anymore. Was in a rush and ate just before, thought I would vomit but I didn't, even took the bus back instead of walking and still didn't vomit. Epic win!

There really isn't much "planning" to be done on 3 days a week. You can bang it in pretty hard every session since you have plenty of recovery time.
Back when I was starting out and only did 3 runs a week I just banged in intervals every day.
>>
>>
>>77101592
Learn what the word empirically means pls
>>77101578
Yeah but what kind of intervals should I bang, like would doing the 3 keys runs from the Norwegian meme in the sticky work? And then when I manage to squeeze in more runs I just run easy
>>
>>77101634
Another anon.
What is your training like now? If you can't do lots then what you do needs to count a bit more if you want to go fast. I have done in the past:
Rolling 2 week cycle: Long run, easy run, easy run, faster run (threshold/3miler fairly quick) easy run, easy run.
Also, alternating:
Long run, short run, not quite so long run, short run, long run (etc.)
Shorter runs are recovery /steady but not quick. Long run is steady, not too easy or too quick (comfy). Shorter long run, bung in 10-15 mins increased pace at the end- 5 mins ease off at end.
Threshold running is magic sauce, helping you tolerate faster paces. Regular but not long distance. Really helps 5 and 10k.
Don't worry about distance covered, look at duration, so 60 mins, 30, 45, 30 etc. Distance will increase as you get fitter. Do a block of harder weeks then have an easy cycle. Rinse, repeat. Finally, listen to how you feel. If you feel crap, ease off temporarily.
Excuse reddit spacing.

Not sure if this is the place to ask, but does anyone know a good walking pad for a fat guy(260 pounds/120kg)? I'm the usual office slob that keeps dropping running whenever the weather gets bad.
Now my work dictated that we all just figure out this whole AI stuff on our own time, so I won't be seeing the sun for a while. Quitting is not an option so I want to get some exercise in while I'm stuck on the computer. All the stuff I find recommended online cuts off at my weight or only allow a few hours running per week.
>>
>>
>>77101882
That's what I've been doing the last few years and I know myself well enough to know that won't work. Takes only another burst of long hours or some bad of bad weather and I'm out of it again for a few months until I get my shit together. My hope is that the lower barrier of a home device and sunk cost will get me to power through this.
>>
>>77101822
I think in general alternating hard easy is the way to go so might be tempted to do long, easy, intervals, easy etc if you can manage four days. If not, I used to find i recovered from intervals better than long runs , so long, easy, intervals (repeat). Also depends if they are evenly spaced throughout the week or clumped together.
YMMV as ever...

How the FUCK do people enjoy being a cyclist??????
>can jog for hours just fine and enjoy doing it
>weather is getting shitty so no fun jogs
>remember I have one of those old inhouse exercise bikes
>start biking
>legs fucking BURNNNNN despite me being slow and using it for 15 minutes and me only burning like 100 kcal
>sweating like a pig (there is no airflow inside that room)
>can already feel a bit of chafing on my asscheeks
Like holy shit this is actual torture, what is the appeal??????
>>
>>77102392
what's not to enjoy?
>sunshine
>fresh air
>natural heat regulation due to wind speed in summer
>variable terrain
>better pacing due to gear (literal gears) training
It also taught me how to better stretch my groin due to hip tightness, which pumps a huge amount of fresh blood to your testicles and dick for insane dick pump.
Only issue i've ever come across
>stop trying to cycle on actual roads
that shit is autistic, find a trail
>people
the amount of women standing in the middle of parks and trails is absurd, they naturally do this same way they do in fucking stores. it's so fucking annoying
>if you're overweight it's worst than jogging
you think it would be easier cardio, but the amount of weight directly on your sitbones is insufferable at first. it's pretty common for fat people to actually bruise their deep buttocks muscles at first.
>>
>>
>>77102421
no that's another autistic thing city faggots do.
i have been cycling for like 30 years and just wear gym shorts, regular shorts, sweat pants. I just wear whatever I want.
granted you're going to have absurd swamp ass and you need to change your pants and air out your groin. like almost to the point of looking like you pissed yourself. so expect to go back home or change asap. underwear actually makes this worse.

Finally am doing differentiated days for sprint training. Did my first proper max velocity day: 30m acceleration and then 50m fly-ins.
Max velocity day is super super fun. Get to go fast but it’s not far enough to get tired. A lot like lifting (ez+fun)
>>
>>77102456
Yes satisfying. I find it takes a few days to get max speed back after an intense speed session. Legs don't feel particularly tired but they just won't turn over as quickly so 210 steps/min vs 240-50 (according to watch). Maybe keep an eye on that - don't need a watch, should be able to feel it - and be careful pushing a speed session if you aren't moving quickly.

So I started using a new mental cue when running, pull the leg up with the groin, lean forward and push off with the glute. Kindof like pulling strings attached to my hips. My ITBS went away 100%.

Didn't see any critters, but I did see a heron flying overhead. It was dark, but I it went in front of some clouds, just a black shadow flapping its wings really slowly. At first, since I was like holy fuck it's a dragon, or mothman, or the jersey devil.
Also saw a cute girl running with some dogs.

Started in August at 100kg and could only run 20 secs before gassing, now I'm 89kg and can finally run 10km but my top speed average is 8:49.
I just can't get any faster, it's too tiring and my legs give up after 2km of sustained 7:00 avg. Is it because of the 15kg overweight?
>>
>>
>>77103677
it's mental tricks, you've gotten to a point where you need to differentiate your running a little bit - do some days faster but less distance and some days just go for max distance and some days try to stay at the thing you're doing. I find the 10km distance is when you need to start having different goals for your runs to see progress.

I think the trick is getting it tight at the right spot... but whether that's nearer to the toes, somewhere in the middle, or nearer to the ankle... I don't know, and never do, and find out afterward how wrong I was.

Much less than that if it's a flat smooth road and mostly straight course, look at the results for a few of the big meets/races, the top times are basically identical between track and road 10k. And if you look at track vs road PBs for elites they're often within a couple seconds of each other for 10k. I don't think it's even 1s/km difference. Road has its own advantages, fewer turns and faster legal shoes.

Do you plan your whole week of training in advance? Maybe Is should. I always have a rough plan but only decide on the specifics on the day. Like tomorrow I have a tempo run but it could be a straight tempo or a fartlek or a progression or maybe even intervals.
>>
>>
>>77111656
I have a structure I stick to and adjust things when necessary, but in general I have 4 easy runs, an interval run, a progression run, and a long run. I inch up the volume slowly. If I’m out of town and intervals on the track are impossible I replace it with some other kind of intervals like hills. The key is to be structured but flexible

Thanks.
Looks like my challenge/experiment is finished, I won't be able to run the next two days. Result: I've gone from couch to 5k or something.
My 5k times didn't improve that fast, stuck around 34-35 minutes. Even did a day where I tried, keeping the usual pace for the first 8 laps then proper run for the last two, still not below 34. Now my legs finally started hurting again, so took it easy and did only 4 km today. 26 minutes so 5k would have definitely been under 34.
Thinking about doing some HIIT kind of sprinting next. We'll see how much i rekt my achillies.

Good weather today and tomorrow. Gonna do a nice back to back. Had a nice tempo push at mile 8

Horrible cramp in my calf at mile 12 today. I was only supposed to run 12, but I was feeling good and figured I'd just go for 13.1. One step into mile 12 it felt like I got stabbed in the leg. Still trying to massage it out, but I have a race this weekend.

I know yeah but that's still a lot and with a very long run on top of it.
Not saying it's too much just way too much for someone like me. I know I would never be able to build up to that without getting injured.

>He was inspired to start running in 1995 at 31 years old, when he read a newspaper profile of a local 62-year-old runner named Pierre Bernard who had run every edition of the Paris 20K race since 1979. Three days later, El Yamani signed up for his first half marathon and finished in 1:19. Within a year, he was signed up for the Berlin Marathon and ran his debut in 2:35, an auspicious start for the later-in-life runner.
He must have been running since childhood. 2:35 debut after one year. Yeah right. NEXT

Felt alright today, still kind of tired. Had some chest pain about 1.5 mi in... Not sure if it was my heart or my lungs. It went away though.
Saw two buns. Also saw a chick with a nice butt, so I guess one could say that I saw four cute buns today. Also saw a whole bunch of ducks trying to cross the trail, but there were too many runners/walkers/bikers.

Marathon tomorrow.
The worst training cycle ever.
>Running in -20C for two months, on slippery roads and in deep snow.
>Longest run just 28 KM.
>Getting cold multiple times.
Unless I get into Boston marathon I'm not doing another winter marathon.

Why do all new running shoes have such thick soles?
I've been using the Asics GT-2000s since high school and recently went to buy a new pair. I found that the current version has a much thicker sole than what I've been used to. Furthermore, it seems every other running shoe I look at also has such a massive thick sole. Is this...bad? I've been using the GT-2000s because they work good for me and I've never had a reason to change but I'm worried that the thick sole will change how they feel.

Good for me anyway as someone who is injury prone. The chunky foam really makes a difference and saves my legs getting beaten up on the roads. Although I think some of them are way too chunky and unstable. These clown shoes from Puma for example. I would take Adidas one over them for sure.

i dunno it's like fashion or something. ten years ago it was basically barefoot shoes even from nike et al, now it's marshmallowmaxing. The new version asics will not necessarily be optimal for you anymore. Funnily enough the latest vaporflys are basically zero drop flats compared to a lot of recent shoes. For me that's the most comfortable actually. There's a moment where total stack height and drop combines into something unholy that I can't run on anymore. I literally bought vomero plus thinking they would be comfy for easy/recovery and they once hurt so bad i had to walk home after 500 meters. I just took my loss and tossed them after 70km. Don't let them gaslight you into thinking this is just technological progress or something. Definitely try multiple brands in store if you can.

Ran a 5k off the bat two days ago, after not having run for about 2 years at all. Surprisingly, my cardio has somehow not really lost a step. Don't know if it's heavy weight, high rep compound lifts or regular vigorous sex (that I was having before the break up) or what, but I went out and smashed it just as fast as I used to. I thought cardio was easy come easy go?
On the other hand, my calves are in full rebellion. Getting up and down the stairs is brutal.

Any advice for knee pain? My left knee's bottom left side feels irritated. I hate it because running is the only thing which absolutely cleans my head and I'd hate to stop doing it...

I only use earbuds when running on a treadmill, but for that I have a Skullcandy Dime 3. I'm not an audiophile, but I'm satisfied. Stays in place, sweat resistant.

>get back to it
>can barely do the first row and when I do it's a struggle
>have done the first run 6 times now with no noticeable improvement
>couldn't even make it to 20 minutes today
What the fuck is happening? Lifestyle, food, etc is more or less the same. Surely I shouldn't be plateauing this hard after such a short break.

Slightly tangential, a lot of us that sprint also hate the direction trainers are going and digging around the few online forums you will see questions asking for relatively low stack, low drop shoes and replies bemoaning the lack of choice. The Pegasus used to be the default choice but no longer. Some like the Adios 7, 8 & 9 (I don't think there's anywhere near enough control in the heel) and Kinvaras are back to lower stack again. Meanwhile there is the slightly odd situation of sprinters training in Nike Waffle xc racers as they sort of meet requirements.
Before anyone comments, I don't think many wear barefoot trainers, at least where any kind of bounding/high impact work is involved (I've seen a handful in the last 4-5 years).
Antepes are an interesting development but they're really a sprint spike (minus spikes) for concrete.

it was something to do with a weird pinching feeling around my arches i think and they had this sort of rocker that made them feel kinda fast but with the way i land i would kind of be in front of the shoe. Like, i don't rocker from a heel landing forward, i try to land on the forefoot. I remember my foot would kind of be trying to grip in the forefoot area and cramp. I think fit was also an issue because i got them in wide and half a size down from my usual upsize for width. Maybe that kinda tipped me over the ideal rocker position?
I left them sitting for a while before I threw them out but after months of not using them i tried them on for a few seconds and I could barely stand in them. Just really offputting. I guess instead of breaking in they just broke and then I couldn't return them lol.

When I put on certain kinds of footwear, particularly some boots, I get pain in my right foot. I think it's here with the toe extensors. I reckon that part bulges out and pinches against the boot.
Anyone have to deal with this?
I usually wear barefoot shoes (not the kind with the toes) so I am wondering if my foot is normal in that respect or maybe "overdeveloped" and that is causing the pinch.
Or maybe those boots/shoes just plain don't fit.
