I have zero knowledge on lifting, very new to fitness. Should I get a barbell or kettlebells? I just want bigger shoulders and biceps, that's it. Can I do deadlifts with kettlebells? I need crash pads though if I'm getting barbells because I'm in an apartment 2nd floor.

A barbell is a lot more efficient and will give you gains a lot faster. The trade off is you need 9-10 feet of space just for the bar, another 4’ by 4’ by 8’ space for the rack, more space for the weights and weight tree, and in your case being on the second floor of a residential building it’s probably not advised for any heavy dynamic loads to be repeatedly dropped like deadlifts or OLY lifts. The setup will also cost you $1500 if you don’t buy total chinesium from amazon and go with quality gear - and that’s if you buy used.

On the other hand a kettlebell is much more primitive, you can really only do clean and press + front squats with it (snatches are good too), but that’s much less muscle recruited overall than the big 4 compound exercises performed with the barbell. But a kettlebell takes up 1x1 feet. A pair takes up… 2x1 feet. If you do ladders or pyramids of double clean and press + double front squat you can get big if you use kettlebells in your 5-10 rep max range (so buy heavier kettlebells than most of the ones you find at the gym).

I was kettlebell only for 7 years and my overhead press got strong. My deadlift didn’t get much higher but surprisingly did go up. My front squat got strong. My back squat and bench withered like the fruits of a poisoned tree.

Now that I have the space for a barbell and rack and am back under the bar, I am getting gains that feel insane to me because I’m used to using a far less efficient tool and doing everything the hard way - including programming.

You don’t need a rack. You can do a ton of exercises with just the barbell. You’ll have to learn them, but it’s doable with just a barbell and some plates
>deadlift
You can do zercher deadlifts if you’re worried about repeatedly dropping the deadlift bar, or just do normal deadlifts. Snatch grip also works if you don’t have a lot of weight.
>squats
You can do a deadlift to zercher squat, clean to front squat or steinborn squat.
>ohp
You can do a clean and Ohp.
>bench
You can floor press, which is also safer as the bar will never slam into your face/throat/chest unless you’re morbidly obese.
>curls
You can do barbell curls
>triceps
You can do tricep over head extensions with the barbell
>shoulders
Other than the Ohp you can do front raises with the barbell, or upright rows
>back
Other than deadlifts you can do rows. Might be helpful if you got a pullup stand/something for a door frame
Pretty much every muscle you can hit with just a barbell and weight, and basically do the same lifts as without a rack. So you’ll save like $1000, and just need money for a decent barbell and some plates. You probably need 315 if your just starting out with a pair of 25s,10s, 5s, 2.5s, 1.25s, 0.75s etc… depending on how low you want to micro load
