If that's how you want to be, fine. Just ask yourself if, "I don't like drawing cute things" is really where you want to go. I didn't either, but I also want to be true to myself and not just a reactionary to the glut of cute.

what should I even focus on to improve
>>
>>7876215
you did great indicating form in your piece!! very soulful lines
>>7879557
try to be mindful of the spaces between body parts and background. there's a wider gap between her arms, and more of a trapezoid shape between her belly, legs, and arms. don't be afraid to gently include lines to suggest form or light/shadow
>>
>>7879591
Thank you this is a helpful reminder
I also overlayed my lineart on the ref and realized her head and shoulder is too far left/down. I really tried to observe as much as I could in the ref but still made that mistake. Is there a way to prevent that kind of thing in the planning phase?
>>
>>7879592
you could very loosely sketch (using a lower opacity brush) your observation aka "gesture" then adjust by adding darker lines as you make corrections.
don't be afraid to exaggerate a little during the loose sketch. the curve on her back? make it very curved. artists have a tendency to "soften" a pose or "correct" an angle.
otherwise keep practicing your observational skills. think about relations between parts; how long her torso and arms are, the space on her shoulder, etc.
what i like to do is do a pure observation piece - then trace the photo next to that figure, then copy the first piece, plop it next to the traced result and see where my errors are and make corrections on it. it makes me notice where my errors in my observational skills faster. eg: i have a tendency to make the head slightly large or whatever.
but that is for practicing realism. once you find yourself bored or getting a decent grasp on it and you just wanna draw cartoon characters, use references to practice stylization. push and pull, shrink and enlarge, play with lines

>hate fake-positive people like this the most
Whole heatedly agree
>>7875481
>why? does it betray your trust or something?
Because it breeds fake confidence and inept smugness about their work that hinders them in the long run. It's like how mid women feel entitled because they have a bunch of simps showering them in complements in hopes of getting pussy now they want a man with a six figure income while they're a single mom or something. Same with the art, they'll think everyone wants to see their shit drawings and they only have to improve a little bit instead of making things structurally sound. They'll think their way is the best way because they have potential and all they'll need is time (and not consciously analyzing mistakes). You're not giving advice, you're not really saying anything but keeping them in the fog. You might as well say nothing, and those privy to the term like us know it as an insult and know you as a disingenuous person.
>>
>>7887791
Look if you don't have the capacity to tell that your work is shit and believe that somebody being positive while giving criticism is "being fake" then you have bigger mental issues to address. There's a good chunk of people on this board that seem to think the only way to receive "real criticism" is if you're being needlessly torn apart. Like I get some of you respond better to that, but that's a you problem, not the criticism itself.
>>
>>7887802
That's why the best way to give crits is to show not tell. None of the dick waving with the pyw or contentious bullshit of people thinking crits aren't valid. Demonstrate your knowledge by redlining, paintovers all that bs. You can't argue against what is clearly shown unless you're deluded. Fact of the matter is, most people on here don't even know what they want, just a vague idea of what they think they want.

>Look if you don't have the capacity to tell that your work is shit and believe that somebody being positive while giving criticism is "being fake" then you have bigger mental issues to address
No it's that people would take it at face value, long time ago I was socially inept and didn't know people were using euphemisms for things (because I was very honest) I thought I was the shit and it did hinder me... I was in high school at the time, looking back at it if they were to tell me what was wrong with it I would've actually fixed it instead of being a smug teenager.
>There's a good chunk of people on this board that seem to think the only way to receive "real criticism" is if you're being needlessly torn apart
Please stop this false dichotomy shit. I said there's no need to say anything, at least in my above example I was expecting something to be said by peers but posting on an anonymous image board/ social media in general you could just leave the piece of artwork alone and let the silence speak for itself. Saying "There's some potential" does absolutely nothing but dupe people or show you as insincere. You don't need to tear people apart, tell them what's wrong with it in a cordial manner and give a compliment on what they did right to reinforce that habit, simple as. "There's potential" says absolutely nothing.
>>
>>
>>7887823
see there's absolutely nothing being said in there. I am not very concise and have to remind myself that the majority of people on here are phone posters now.
Are you old enough to remember the disdain people had for phone posters on here? Anyway your insult has potential, but seeing how I draw not write your criticism is warranted.
>>
>>7887808
I made that original post. I don't give "very good" posts to retards. I was just trying to give a pat on the back to a guy who seemed like he needed some confidence to try. I think I'm most people know the difference between comments meant to gas someone up and actual advice about technique. I didn't mean to trigger any aitosmos.

Hi anon, I had a hypothesis, but I need someone like you to test it for me.
Can you do the same drawing again, but spend 4x the amount of time on it than you did the first time. And I want to see the results.
