Thread #7889698

H
The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/pages/submissions is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

Iconic Comics (https://www.iconiccomics.com/)
>A bit like Oni Press and Antarctic Press
>A small publisher with a focus on indie works with manga inspiration
>>

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

I think you have to go aliased for print, since the blur is technically greyscale

Ha ha well of course I did.

Question: is this digital clock font for someone speaking through a mic difficult to read at a glance?
>>
>>7890232
It's hard to read this font, but only because it's white with black outlines. I think it would be better if it was just black.

It's not too terrible, but imo something like pic related works just fine
>>
>>7890232
it's not great. if you like it, use it for something with big font like chapter titles
>>
How do you guys approach pages? I keep formatting almost every page as having its own beginning and ending even though they're all part of the same chapter. Been kind of moving away from that but pretty much only during action scenes or other cutscene moments so far.
>>
>>7890232
yeah it's hard to read but if you made it solid black it should work
>>
>>7890328
I used to do that. its weirdly intuitive but if you study manga you will notice there is no structure like that

Nah, I use a mini PC at it doesnt fry or even overheat. The most that happens with my pages is that if I try to apply an effect, like lets say a screentone, to the entirety of the page, CSP buffers a little bit before it loads, but when working section by section it works just fine.I save them as TIFF images though so Im not sure if that plays a part in that, they dont take up as much memory as the PNG's
>>
>>7890572
(cont.) I do end up saving them as PNG's after I finish editing and everything though

To be fair it's a 6GB tablet and I have the music player going and the gallery app handy for reference images, I doubt my RAM economy could support a feature like that. I don't need a timelapse though, I can just tell everyone my process:
>draw for 3 minutes
>suddenly think of a post to make
>spend 15 minutes on my phone
>draw for 3 minutes

why tf did you shorten the body? it was already too short as it was
>>
>>7890520
It's worked for some moments but I'm feeling its limitations as the story becomes more involved so I'm hoping necessity will push me out of the habit.

u boarding for a film or making a comic? either way you dont need nearly that many panels
>>
>>7890631
I had absolutely NO intention of actually inking the body, is why. I just wanted to figure out what this guy's face would look like.
I really hate this hair.
>>
>>7890646
I actually kind of like the slow, plodding nature of it. Very A New Hope esque. Just don't overdo it - you can probably afford exactly one page like this before the magic wears off.
>>
>>7890647
Make it a bit longer and have it sag a bit on his shoulder so it looks more natural and not like it's being blown by a light breeze from behind, that might do it.
>>
>>7890646
Nta but it's atmospheric. It wouldn't do for every establishing shot, but it works for a story's beginning. The title autism, thoughever...

I was debating whether that was a good idea or nah. I'm going to move on in either case or the comic never gets finished
>>7890646
It's called ''moment-to-moment'' and is seen in a lot of comics. I agree that I can't overuse the method tho. I just wanted the cinematic feel.
>>7890650
Thanks!
>>
>>7890654
I think you consistently use way too many panels, OR would benefit from arranging your page to be very tall rather than about square shaped, so the reader scrolls down the panels as they come rather than seeing them all at once and heaving to methodically read through them. That latter approach is fine when there's like five panels on a page, but when there's this many, you're doing your own work a disservice.
>>
>>7890654
>I'm going to move on in either case or the comic never gets finished
Never forget: "make it first, then make it good." In the wrong hands this means "never improve," in the right hands it means "don't waste all your time redoing everything."

Also interesting to see that witches are trending right now (ichi the witch, witchriv and some others) .
>>
>>7890740
ok. so I'll break down this onions ideology. It seems reactionary at best. like a childs understanding of causation.
I'm tall, not ripped but still got some beef on me, yet I'm both into making art and music. I dont fuck around with women. again, a chudcels understanding of men who are 1 inch taller than them.

none of my parents were in wars, yet I still know about the global banking cartels and their era of total war. you ought to be athe dumbest fucking turbo normie not to know even a little bit of this by now.

I was bullied and then did the bullying. empathy is not reliant on a system of duality, it is a matter of maturity and willingness. even with no proper father figure in your life to teach you, you are still responsible for that.

I am strong, in every way. and the strong must lead and protect the weak. Of course there has been discourse about how the strong respect the strong, which is true. this does not preclude the importance and duty of the strong. the keyword being "duty"

I genuinely dont get the "happy family, company employee, married" thing. thats one of the stranger assertions on this tirade. I didnt have much of a happy family childhood and i'm self employed. not married, but thats not due to unwillingness, just current logistics.

If you werent a sickly cunt, all your characters would be healthy? ok. well creation isnt strictly a therapy session for the creator. I happen to greatly respect artists who make things optimistically in spite of their condition. those people inspire me to do the same. and I hope to do the same for others.

your shame as a subject. well that depends on what your shame is. my shame is not being strong enough or wise enough. if yours is anything like most basket cases, I dont wanna hear it. statistically most artsy fags these days are weirdo perverts.

i dont know who that jap guy is, but having Marx as your primary influence? I can think of a few better ones
>>
>>7890959
I'm a little afraid my stuff is becoming face-only manga. But facial expression and detail are als important to convey how characters react to events/information conveyed. How to deal with this dilemma?
>>
>>7891043
Drawing the characters in their scene helps so you don't have to go nuts drawing a bg or setting the scene once per page, but you can make a little effort to show their surroundings a little bit. If they're sitting in a chair then show them in the chair, or you can toss in a pillow shot. It helps gives dialogues a sense of space and makes things lively. Tbh this looks just fine so if you're worried about it idk... take some notes and sticky it somewhere in your periph so you're always looking at it.

Not familiar with Billy Bat, but thanks I think.

As for witches trending, I feel like they have been since Harry Potter.
Only taking a short break for to be subbed with vampires for the Twilight phase.
>>
>>7891043
It depends on the scene your writing but honestly if you have at least one panel with bodies in it like you do in your pic thats good enough. Not every page can be full of body shots despite how hard you try
>>
>>7891043
You have to remember that you can convey emotion/mental state with any part of the body or even how someone uses something because everything a person does expresses their personality in some way and through art, you can focus on whichever part in any way you want in order to get that across. I use hands or a shot of the character's posture from behind to depict stuff like this sometimes, I dislike feet but Bokurano showed me that even feet and legs can convey a person's apprehension and awkwardness towards something. The whole body is a vehicle of feeling, utilize it better. Nice art, but if you only focus on the face then that really is just about all your visuals will be and you'll feel lost when you're not able to use it.

making a couple short comedic webcomics, what do you guys think I gotta work on with my art?
>>

>>
>>7891179
I think you know where to position things but less about how to swivel and turn them to make them better fit. It's hard to desceibe so think of old gen 6 games where the movements were kind of stiff even though you implicitly understood what they were going for even if it couldn't be animated as gracefully in-engine as it was in CG cutscenes. Also if it's just comedic stuff I'd say don't worry about making the art too detailed as that could actually break the pace of whatever the jokes are, you look at most gag spinoffs/manga and they use a simpler style even if you see them do way better art in their main stuff.

I stayed up all night drawing a background for a single panel. A panel most wont even look at for more than a couple seconds. For a comic no one reads. Had to erase half of it because the scale was fucked. Woke up to see the Act-Age writer is still getting industry work after molesting a middle schooler. What the fuck am I doing with my life?
