I think the academy stage can have some potential for interesting stuff, so rushing it would be a bit of a waste. It also gives the kids some time to get to know eachother and make the teams later have some meaning to them instead of being rolled. I think the festival is a neat idea, as is the teacher competition. General learning stuff and SoL is also cool to see, this is a setup phase for relationships as far as I can see.
I have some ideas for stuff with Leigan, and some of that is technically close to Borochimaru showing up I guess. The researchers would have some form of mad science like him. But maybe it's better if someone makes actual villain builds instead of resorting to NPCs, and my idea is a bit far away, it kinda needs a setup. For now it's a training/SoL piece, after the backstory.

Nana probably wouldn't be too jealous as long as she can reasonably believe that Momika is acting in the long con. Their whole student teacher connection was built on seeing Momika be charming and friendly with people in a way that got her money/favors/connections. It would take something different for Nana to get the idea of "does Sensei actually like this person?" and get the spark of jealousy she's never felt before. But Nana is very clingy in general, sticking by Momika's side whenever she can and being a little lackey to her.

Stuff came up, so I wasn't able to complete the build update with more details, so I'll just type out some points here.
She's tomboyish due to her strong Yang chakra, and a bit envious at times of more feminine women, but she's protest embarrassed if you tried to put her in a dress, and she won't give up martial training.
She spent most of her career as a mercenary. When she was younger, she aspired to rise up out of the ronin status into becoming a proper samurai, but it was not to be. She travelled a lot and is a well of knowledge about plenty of topics, but history and geography are her favourites because at their fire they describe different peoples and cultures.
A streak of bad luck and even worse decisions set her on a route of witnessing and committing some war crimes, and seeing friends die and betray each other. She was even forced to kill some of them herself. She drinks to forget about those times and her loneliness. She feels like she wasted her life, having nothing to show for it except her combat skills. The chance to teach is her chance to finally do something she could be proud of. In fact there are deeds she could be proud of in the past. Many innocent people owe their lives to her, but the pretender syndrome and other wrongdoings she's done cover that.
However, she will not show that inner turmoil to the kids, and will even try to hide it from other teachers. At the academy, she puts on the mask of a caring teacher, who's usually a bit aloof, but serious during combat instructions. TBF, the mask isn't even the right word. She is those things, but she uses the focus on them to hide that depressed side. She really enjoys working with children, and it helps soothe her maternal instincts.

I'm not really sure for Sumio. I don't think I've spent enough time with the characters to know what would make for the most interesting dynamics. There's potential for conflict with Aisuke, so that might work well. Just from my impression of Leigan, I feel like he and Sumio would interact basically like work colleagues. Like neither of them would go out of their way to become friends, but they wouldn't have any reason to take issue with one another either. I could be way off though.

I feel like a lot of these pairings are a bit "safe," in a way. For example, I'd probably make Nana room with someone other than Momika, so that she's forced to put herself out there on her own. Similarly, it seems more interesting to me if Ayane rooms with someone younger, so she's forced to face her feelings of inadequacy.

But it's possible the room situation isn't an interesting enough vehicle for exploring those concepts to warrant spending any more time on. Maybe we should just decide and move on with it kek

Working on Dogen's introduction via a class at the moment, a lot of student introductions were covered in Momika/Myorin's writeups so I'll try and focus on the students that haven't had as much exposure yet, but it'll mostly be about introducing Dogen's lessons and how he teaches.

It may end up being a Part 2/3 business but he'll be doing a few basic tests; seeing how well the students can mould chakra, disperse it, change its nature, sense it, use paper to test their affinities, etc. He'll also be asking each of the students what their best ninjutsu is. Other than that there's going to be a lot of academic exams since he's speedrunning through the 6 years of the lower Academy years to make sure everyone is caught up. Expect a paper exam or three every month from him of increasing difficulty.

There'll eventually be 1 on 1 personalized tests with him pushing their best jutsu to their breaking point as just about his only interesting curriculum piece. So my questions for the thread are simple;

If asked, Nana would choose Earth Weapon. In her opinion, her summons don't feel enough like her own power for her to consider summoning them as her own ninjutsu.

Nana has only ever used the jutsu on her own katanas, which she didn't bring with her to school (I imagine that Myorin had them using practice swords for their taijutsu test, and that made her think that she could keep her katanas in her dorm room). But she isn't the kind of girl to ask the teacher for help, so she'd attempt to form swords from earth to poor results because she'd be basically winging it. Crumbly, blunt things that look closer to clubs than swords. She'd be struggling to keep them solid and would be incredibly embarrassed at struggling so much at what she just called her "best ninjutsu". Dogen's unimpressed look would only make it worse for her, and the jutsu would fall apart, then she would to make an escape back to her or Momika's seat without being told she's dismissed.

It's not that she's unwilling to show it off, it's that releasing a black hole jn the middle of a classroom is a really bad idea. She's also probably saving it fir a special occasion.
Instead, she would use Gravity Release, levitating everything and everyone in the room, and Teleportation, which while isn't actual teleportation, rapidly transports her target.

Thanks to her eyes, she has excellent control over her chakra (able to see chakra + slow motion + able to see at the microscopic level) so even grandiose displays are not that exhausting.
When she doesn't get adulations for how amazing she is, she'd pout and sulking at her desk.

Hibiki would say its Hypersonic Mind Waves. It's one of his Clan's Hidden Techniques, it's really versatile, and he's got a lot of experience and talent with it.

If she's using Elemental Illusion, then dancing. Makes sure enough windows are open so she can fan out the smell of burning by the end. Since the classroom floor/desks/chairs are wooden, she keeps the flames close to herself during the performance, not leaving a single scorch mark on her surroundings, but ending up dripping with sweat by the end of things. Anyone caught in it will feel like they're suffering from an intense fever, unable to move their aching bodies or breathe properly. At the same time, they'll feel desperately cold and won't registering the flames as deadly hazards, but sources of warmth. The trick is that she can tone their sensitivity up and down from warm hug to burning alive.

If she's using regular Illusory Arts, then a sight-based genjutsu will do. Since Dogen is the main target, she will try to show any of the teaching materials he brought bursting into flames without warning it's an illusion beforehand.

Yeah, I've been trying to keep that in mind as well with Sumio. I made a future version of the build after my first D rank draft, and then worked backwards from that to something that makes sense to me narratively for him at an academy level. I didn't want to give him too much at the jump. He's gonna have to work for certain techniques and jutsus. That said, it's entirely possible that the future build will look different in the end based on how the narrative of the MP as a whole progresses. Hell, he could even die kek.

It kinda depends on the context of the contest, but I think he'd feel the stakes are too low to warrant cheating himself. His water style would probably make it an easy W, but that would defeat the point of fishing to him. It's meant to be an excuse to relax.

Depending on how and why the person cheated, he'd either think they're missing the point, or that they must need the win a lot more than he does. Either way, he'd just shrug it off.

Are there dummies to demonstrate with? She'll do this regardless, but she'll look less crazy/thoughtless if she's not randomly shooting ooze on the floor. She'll start with the basics: sticky glue slime, spraying acidic slime, and sliding around on the floor after spraying slippery slime on it.

You're not that off, but Leigan is trying to understand the whole teamwork thing, and despite himself he will get attached at some point. Also simply seeing Sumio being lazy and still alive will be a very strange experience for him that will make him relax more in the long run. Aisuke would be a strange and complex ordeal, but it wouldn't be aggression, at least it wouldn't be malice, let's put it that way.

I'm not sure what counts as ninjutsu precisely but probably Rupture Slash. He's working on other applications with what the curriculum is, like eventually Element Blade/Spear but for now that's the only combat applicable one. If Dogen tells him that doesn't count then he will fall back to what he calls cantrips, which is Utility Jutsus, a lot of shiny lights and some arcs of lighting with almost no punch. Unless the chains count, that's his most stand out feature in general.

Dogen is a professor, and very similar to the researchers he's used to, so he sees no reason to hide what he can do. He can't get better if he doesn't know what he's doing wrong.

Either a lot of slashes with his chains in quick succession for Rupture Slash, or combining small lights to create a flashbang with utility. He wouldn't be hurt by a mild reaction, or even no reaction at all, the best he could hope for was silent scribbling before so even a single comment would take him by surprise

Water Style: Water Ball Jutsu. It's the first elemental jutsu he taught himself, and therefore the one he has practiced the most.

It's no secret. When keeping it to a small size, he can perform the jutsu almost mindlessly while bored, which is fairly often. He has mastered it to the point that he can cast it without hand signs and freely change its size and shape, alter its density, increase and decrease its spin, etc.

Sumio essentially has a checklist in his head of what he expects a ninjutsu instructor to be looking for, and is mostly correct in these assumptions. He'll basically be putting on a show, displaying his mastery of the technique. He finds the jutsu fun and easy to perform, so he won't be paying too much mind to Dogen's unimpressed expression, assuming that eventually one of the things he tries will change it. Once he gets to the end having checked every box, he'll be confused as to why Dogen still isn't impressed by the kid putting in zero effort to challenge himself.
