hat set is hat set when they wear hats
capenna hats and suits on everyone for no reason
thunder junction cowboy hat on characters that don't normally wear that shit
murders of fedora manor again
and that's it unless you count aetherdrift where the cars are the hats but at least they had a story reason there
eoe or sos had no single repeating object on a character for 0 reason. tezzeret looked normal in space and so did the walkers on strixhaven

The time/era is not the defining factors if you take that there has to be magic built into your setting; DSK is fine. Hat sets are narrow focused, or at least they overdo a thing (aesthetic, mechanic, tribe) that shouldn't be so prominent in a good setting. MKM and OTJ are the best examples, but DFT and STX can be considered hat sets too.

Holy shit I feel like a total tard. I think maybe because I was previously running Quirion Beastcaller I thought Yannik worked the same way where it only redistributed the counters that were on the creature. Didn't realize it was its power regardless of counters. I have a fucking Kalakscion which is a 7/2 and I should absolutely be running it. The textures on the lace and belt vs the skin give me an inconsistent feeling. I remember Wizards sharing original sketches which looked 1000x better than the printed version. The belt and bracelet feel very digital tacked-on. By comparison the skin reminds me of early CG like Reboot or the Cover of Dance of Death, it's that type of tone imo. Something is wrong here.

Garbage, but at least it isn't as blatantly traced from a photo like a lot of Magic art. Pic related among one of the absolute worst culprits
Things to look out for
>highly detailed person with very realistic lighting
>against a background they are not interacting with in any way at all
>recognizable real world objects (here it's steampunk goggles)
>aspects not in the original photo are noticeably drawn worse (here the hair looks very flat and unrealistic compared to the crazy realistic eyes and hands etc)

It's funny, now that you say that I can see that his model likely had a head band of some kind to compress the hair/head, but the goggle part in the front was added on top. Steampunk goggles weren't exactly commonplace when the art was commissioned in like 2000, so I find it unlikely that they were drawn from life. (also they feel tacked on when looking closely)
I almost think it works for Braids, in part due to nostalgia and in part because she's meant to be an uncanny and disturbing character.

There's a lot that catch my eye every now and then.
As much as people crow about Rebecca Guay I think her best work was in the late 00s.
Sam Guay has done some good work on Deadly Cover Up and Change of Fortune
Iain McCaig's All That Glitters and Claim the Firstborn are good
Olena Richards did the Bitterblossom Secret Lair which is beautiful, as well as the framebreak Pearl Medallion which is also exceptional.
Probably my favorite piece at the minute is still Demonic Counsel by Babs Webb but to date she's hardly done any MtG art at all

God I fucking hate talking to artlets about art. You don't even know what the fuck you're looking at
>>real world objetcs, like steam punk googles
>Whats the problem with this? Also, since when “steampunk googles” are something common in the “real world”?
See you don't even get what the fucking point of the post was.
The point was that the art is traced from the photo. One of the things that hints at it being traced is that the googles in the image are recognizably what would now be called steampunk cosplay goggles. They don't have to be "common in the 'real world' " for that to be what they fucking are
You can google "fantasy art photo reference" and find entire sites dedicated to nothing but a database of photos taken in studios with fantasy props.
>Such an iconic and powerful face expression on her
I don't care if you like it anon, it is traced.
Tracing from a photo instead of using photos for reference is the difference between copying someone else's essay and changing the name or writing your own essay referencing other works on the subject. I really don't care if you liked the plagiarised essay.

There's tons wrong with it, some I didn't even notice last time I explained it. For instance I've just now noticed that the AI inexplicably put a plate of bone connected to the sternum and collar bones which doesn't exist on a humanoid skeleton, and on the finger the ring is on, the hand apparently has an unfortunate bone tumor jutting out just before the knuckle
>Do you have any thoughts on Platinum Angel though?
The original I presume? It's fine. Might have been using a figurine or a miniature as a reference with a desklamp above it, but the textural complexity doesn't look like any sort of character or model I can think of so they would have changed a lot about their reference if they used one.
I guess it looks like it's made of stone more than platinum, but as an art piece it's fine.

>it all ultimately started in Theros.
It didn’t. Historical mythology is fine. Encouraged in fact.
Old Magic was just ripping of Lord of the Rings like ever other fantasy game, and JRRT was ripping off North Western European myth and folklore.
You don’t shit your pants when you see winged angels even though that’s just Christian mythology.
You’re shitposting, you’re this close to saying “Arabian Nights was the first UB”

Just view this as a nice summer break. The heat is not kind to the air quality of the average LGS anyway. Personally, I'm keeping busy trying to build him as a "b2" silver bullet to play exclusively against cringe commanders. I think defence grid is a good fit for it as it cancels the tax with just one more creature in play

Fuck off.
The thing is I actually like a lot of the card design in the set and there are some sleeper hits in the Commander product, but in terms of theme it's almost as bad as all the 80s shit in Duskmourn.
I hope to god we're almost out of WotC's film era.
>noir!
>cowboys!

It's not like the sets are even bad, it's just so creatively bankrupt and inappropriate for Magic.

I saw someone make the point that Magic has become fast food, and while I think that comparison is a bit tired its not wrong. Just all about firing neurons, making as much money as possible, then moving to the next thing. There is no thought given to something that will last or be enjoyed. The health and quality the game is far down on their list of concerns, line must go up because Magic is pretty much the only thing keeping Hasbro afloat.
And it's proven when they claim a fake-Magic set is top 10 selling of all time while it rots on shelves to this day. They have the data on how things sell at retail, they know it's not getting to players, but they're still going to quote sales from distributors to shareholders to deceive them into thinking it was successful
