I agree, it seems out of character for Clint to be into it. But Tarantino stole all of Sergio Leone's moves, so maybe it's not that unprecedented.
>>218196201
Allegedly, some people (maybe Asia Argento? maybe Shu Qi?) wanted to give it to Inglourious Basterds. The White Ribbon was more of a compromise choice.

Holy shit i'm retarded, meant to say Eastwood of course, not Tarantino. I think i'm actually losing my mind, bros, things like opening the cupboard and immediately forgetting what i was gonna get from it, or putting something in the cupboard that was supposed to go in the fridge and only realising it several minutes later have been happening to me more frequently lately.

Absolutely based edition. Regarding the QotD, I will ramble a bit:
Nick Ray's Bigger Than Life is also my answer. But there are also Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest and Griffith's The Country Doctor.
In Bigger Than Life and Diary of a Country Priest you have a very Romantic portrayal of illness. This dualism of body and soul but interconnected by the ailment. Specially in the later title, the illness gives a tragic destiny to the body but also it signals sacrifice and redemption, and as a symbol for his inner turmoil, of his faith. You could saythe suffering conveys a spiritual aura. In the former title there's also the sickness as a consequence of not only an inner, personal, turmoil but the external malaise of modern consumption society... And the climax has an incredible pathos, it's masterful, it's so painful..
About The Country Doctor, the last shot is transcendental as fvck. Now I shall free you of my ramblings.

Pulp Fiction is good and only dumb contrarians seething about Uno Farto being a cringelord IRL shit on it. The gimmick of taking a script of what is really a mainstream crime-comedy and reassembling it into a non-linear narrative that still flows well and makes sense was and is cool. Also, at the time Palm d'Or had a reputation of only being given to old fart movies that smell of stale book covers and naphthalene. Exceptions were Barton Fink (which was still Coens throwing a bone to old farts by making a 40s theowback about muh looming Red Scare and blacklisting, and yes, I do believe that was the thematic intention), Wild at Heart (which admittedly Uno Farto stole shit from) and Sex, Lies and Videotape, which really is Soderberg injecting Rohmer (old fart shit) into Hal Hartley. So giving it to a recent, young genre-movie Sundance revelation was kinda transgressive. "Fuck you I'm gonna give it to something the older french faggots will think is not pretentious enough". Especially it's funny because of how shamelessly Farto wore the french faggot influence on his sleeve. "I'm gonna take your formal reassembly crap and reassemble it again but in a McDonald's". That's quite funny.

The White Ribbon is indeed mediocre, total fucking bore where Haneke basically makes up a strawman that Germans were literally evil Satan of hypocrisy and that's why they became nazi chuds and that wypipo are ontologically evil and shiet.
>>
>>218196039
Mike Leigh is a hack fraud who makes Santa Barbara soap operas but the cinematography is somehow even more dull. More inventiveness in that Hollyoaks incel blackpill scene than in any shite Leigh put out. Adjani is based for being willing to say fuck you to muh competitive conventions and highlight two great films. Although I do personally believe Taste of Cherry is better than The Eel, I probably wouldn't have trouble choosing.

glad you liked it. I just checked out Arnold's other Jeff Chandler collaboration from the same year, The Tattered Dress, and it's a solid counterpart to that film. it preceded Man in the Shadow but actually feels like a more ambiguous development upon it: Chandler's character is once again confronted with a corrupt local authority in a desert town but this time the sequence of events is set in motion by his own moral shortcomings. I would say it lacks any visual bravura moments on par with the barbershop or murder scenes from Man but maintains the same sort of assurance and elegance. This stuff has really piqued my curiosity for Arnold who I had previously only known as the Creature from the Black Lagoon guy
I still need to get on The Lawless myself

>In some ways Boss Nigger is an amazing film. It was shot in the western town of J. W. Eve's Movie Ranch in New Mexico on a budget of $200,000. The full-scope Todd-AO 35 photography is good, and the camera movement and staging are excellent. No corners appear to be cut. Jack Arnold's major contribution to this film is that it was made at all; only a director with his experience and efficient technique could have made so much out of so little.[4]
> Vincent Canby of The New York Times described Boss Nigger as "a pleasant surprise if you stumble upon it without warning"
>Jack Arnold seems to have been artiste exécutant on this picture; content-wise, we must regard Fred Williamson as the film's auteur. He is like a black Clint Eastwood in a Cottafavi western.
damn, tempted to put it in the watchlist. It surely must be better than Life of Emile Zola, which is EXACTLY the same movie than Story of Louis Pasteur (same director, same producer, same Paul Muni, same historical setting, same cinematographer, slightly bigger budget).
It almost has the same story beats once the writer reaches the Dreyfuss affair. In fact the movie is clearly ten times more about Dreyfuss than the rest of Zola's life, but I guess the jews at Warner bros thought it was gonna be too much of a jewish movie if not (att: Josh Safdie).

I see some guy has a mile long essay in defense of his career but it opens with this retarded nonsense so I'm not particularly inclined to continue
>I don’t know if one can dissect the career of William Dieterle — or more specifically, bemoan the fact that his name doesn’t enjoy wider recognition — without discussing the auteur theory. After World War II, France was in such financial ruin — and film budgets at such a premium — that directors were forced to scrape by on very little; their work became more personal, a consequence of them having few tools at their disposal other than their own imaginations. The French saw fit to praise them as “auteurs” (i.e, authors) because they exerted far more influence over their films than pre-war directors.

I asked Grok to write an epic battle of history between Ozu vs. Bresson
OZU:
Yo, I’m Ozu, low-angle legend, tatami mat throne
Camera sits humble, eye-level, never roamin’ alone
You run around Paris with your models lookin’ blank
I got Chishū Ryū sippin’ tea, droppin’ truth, no prank
Pillow shots droppin’ like haiku between the lines
Vase in the corner knows more than your actors’ signs
You chase grace through suffering, ellipses, and pain
I show mono no aware — life changes, feel the strain
Every frame balanced, symmetrical, ordered precise
Your fragmented hands and feet? Man, that’s just slice
I break the 180, shoot straight into the soul
You got non-actors mumblin’ — sound like they lost control
Tokyo family meals, daughters marry, seasons turn slow
Your pickpockets and donkeys? Grace comes, then they go
I brew green tea patience, you starve the screen for effect
But my quiet cuts deeper — respect.
>>
>>
>>218206575
BRESSON:
Bresson in the booth, cinématographe, not your cinéma show
No theater gestures, no psychology, just the real undertow
You cozy up low, tatami tourist, pillow shots for zen
I strip the image bare till the mystery kicks in
Your static cam polite, polite little Japanese lie
Mine’s a guillotine — chop emotion, let the divine fly
Models repeat till the soul leaks through the crack
Your actors smile gently — that’s just sentimentality smack
No music unless the hand plays it live on set
You lean on nostalgia, red kettle, safe regret
I got Mouchette drownin’, Balthazar bleedin’ grace
Your Late Spring just sighs while the daughter leaves the place
You film the everyday till it’s cozy and warm
I film the everyday till it breaks the norm
Fragment, elide, isolate the hand on the door
Your perfect compositions? Just bourgeois decor
Transcendence ain’t polite tea — it’s raw, it’s severe
You whisper “life goes on” — I scream “God is here”
You arrange the frame like ikebana art
I empty the frame till grace rips it apart
Your family dramas end with a train leavin’ town
Mine end with a gunshot — or a donkey fallin’ down
You comfort the viewer, I make ‘em confront the void
Step back, Ozu-san — your pillow’s too soft, overjoyed.

>theatrical performances, theatrical direction
the actors are non-professional ones (this is one of the key elements of this film) from the working class mileau the film transpires, but they clearly have scripted dialogues, scenes, and a 'theatrical direction' as you say.
>theatrical staging
now let me tell you of another key element of the film, it's all shot on-location, no hollywoodean studio artificiality: the mise-en-scène is naturalistic and not staged, you could even say there's no mise en scène to begin with. And the narrative, the plot, which is a staunch penchant of theatrical films, is loose. Neorealist films like Bicycle Thieves are essentially anti-narrative.
>Is this film good
To me it's a very good film and very worth checking out

Assayas is a chameleon director, which sounds like a compliment but not necessarily, he can't always pull it off. The political thrillers of his are the worst. They're just generic and poorly thought out. Also The Wizard of Kremlin is a stupid book for retards, the "Wizard of Kremlin" character is a made-up composite of several people, for no apparent reason, it simplifies and dumbs down things as opposed to if the book was written without a fictional insert. I assume the movie will simplify shit even more. And not, I'm not a chud / tankie / serb. The sensational approach should be bad to you even if in you're someone who wore blue and yellow nail polish in 2022. It misinforms, and gives people who simp for Russia room for gotchas about muh anglosaxons who don't understand the Russian soul or some shit. Yes, this is all politics, but what else is there two say when you make a Putin movie? It sure isn't interesting formally, just a regular political biopic / thriller in ever aspect from visual to narrative.

I can definitely see that.
There are plenty of good actresses included yet some glaring omissions, like the anon who made it has a visible grudge or something. For example, Huppert is objectively more /film/ than Helen Mirren, Glenda Jackson, or that bitch from The Handmaiden.

I disagree, Mirren is very /film/. Ken Russell, Peter Greenaway, John Boorman, Paul Schrader, Robert Altman, (almost) David Lynch, Tinto Brass, Fast & Furious... She's got range.
