Coincidentally, The Whole Bloody Affair (4.5hrs) is another long one and I was fortunate enough to see it in theaters a couple months back, almost exactly 11 years after Nymphomaniac.

great edish, I fuck love Fassbinder. for the literate among you I strongly recommend Fassbinder: Life and Work of a Provocative Genius', 'Fassbinder: Film Maker' and 'Understanding Rainer Werner Fassbinder'. there's also the quite famous Penman one, 'Fassbinder: Thousands of Mirrors', but that turned out to be only tangentially related to Fassbinder, more of a freewheeling kind of thing that hops around various Critical Business, and while very readable Penman's grasp of Fassbinder's films is, to put it generously, lacking.

Anyway, QOTD: threeway tie between Ali, Berlin Alexanderplatz and 13 Moons. my favourite deep cut is Fear of Fear, which is tremendously underrated.

Bonus: at the moment I'm quite partial to Albert Serra

I imagine the inevitable point of comparison for anyone who would watch this is going to be Pialat's La gueule ouverte (and Le Garçu / Nous ne vieillirons pas ensemble to some extent): an intimately understood provincial petit bourgeois world depicted without indulgence nor cruelty as the backdrop for a son's encounter with the death of a parent and the weight of family history. stylistically sober and stripped even further of dramatic incident than Pialat such that it risks bordering on the monotone, but nonetheless very moving at times. easy recommend if you like big Maurice or that film where Jean Eustache interviews his grandmother for two hours.
in two thread-appropriate coincidences, the protagonist at one point reminiscences upon his childhood days as a rugby-playing fruitbowl, and a poster for Unforgiven appears in a gas station window

Still watching it, but I can't believe I purposefully avoided watching Window Water Baby Moving and The Act of Seeing With One's Own Eyes only for this piece of shit to include recycled footage in his dogstarmanshit "epic". The footage itself is beautiful. His technique with film is marvelous. The thing is that Brakhage is a wonderful visual artist, but a terrible storyteller. The whole film becomes puerile with his self-important clichés. What do you think of his Conan the Destroyer? I like how it's much more of a genre film than the Milius one, it embraces and leans into the sword & sorcery genre so hard that it laughs at itself; it takes the mythical figures of the epic Milius constructed and deals with them in a tongue in cheek way that i like a good deal. Even though Milius' film is much better, i find Fleischer's a much more fun pure adventure film. Also, teen Olivia D'Abo.

The Eiger Sanction has the best climbing footage i've ever seen in a film, other than that it's a pretty standard 70s film (which means it's better than 95% of films made in the last 20 years). Breezy provoked such an emotional response in me (i actually cried like a fag) that i don't even want to talk about it, so i'll just say it's uberkino, and it is very funny that that film is what he followed High Plains Drifter with.
