very surprising entry in today's Dieterle entry, a Weimar silent homosexual drama which he directed AND starred.

the sexual frustration drama of a young couple when he's sent to prison for involuntary manslaughter; she copes by getting fat and cheating and he becomes a pantiesmeller and a situational fag.

At times surprisingly poetic and crude, I didnt expect this kind of movie at all!

Genuinely cannot believe this movie is so shallow and overrated. Kurosawa has a unique visual eye for framing and that is the entirety of his appeal. His movies lack any humanity and cannot progress beyond the basic premise.

This movie sets up 1) the main character bet his life on a corporate gamble 2) someone kidnapped his chauffeur’s son for ransom cash within the first 10 minutes. It then repeats this exact basic information for another hour. Absolutely nothing happens. It is so unfathomably boring.

I gave up on this one. After also disliking Seven Samurai and only getting minimal value from Rashoman and Ikiru — feel pretty confident saying Kurosawa is the most overrated director in the artform.

My problems with Kurosawa tend to lie in his inclinations towards didactic relations of information; all is laid out Right There, and nothing is demanded any further intrigue, leaving very little room for any extratextual consideration. For this reason, the narrative operations in High and Low feel very ineffectual to me, as in service of nothing beyond literal-minded observation, which is something I don't find at all compelling. I don't understand the perpetual compulsion of so many narrative filmmakers to tie up all of their cinematic goings-on so neatly; it's so tired! None of the drama adds up to anything here; I don't know, I just don't get it.

It's well-blocked and well-filmed and well-acted and everything else you might expect from a Kurosawa project but it is also just about the most formally safe movie ever made. A real chore, and a much better fiction than a cinema, which is a pretty unfortunate thing for a movie to be.
