Tends to happen when the game is so new player hostile. Most games you can learn the base rules, then start piling on stuff on top and maybe start learning the deeper meta intricacies when playing competitively.
In Yugioh? You need to learn the baseline of like 7 different summoning mechanics, the various rulesets associated with each Spell/Trap type, learn how to read PSCT etc. and even after all that you STILL can't really play the real game because you NEED knowledge of your opponent's deck in order to actually play at any baseline level without just immediately losing.
And there's no real avenue to try and get new players. Some might say Genesys, but that's just lowering the number of mechanics needed to learn by 2 and still enduring the same gameplay with a harder deckbuilding ruleset to interact with

I think you can infer some stuff from the official LOCH decklists. They didn't include any unreleased cards, which makes some of the decks noticeably awkward in how you're even supposed to play them, which could imply they'll release cards later to patch up the playstyle.

The DM deck smashes in a small Shining Sarc package even though there is no way to bridge to it, which means they DID intend for Shining Gandora to be the going second play for Yugi.dek. Weird that they didn't include a Silent. They've also got Cyberse Code Magician in here currently just to search Illusion of Dark Magic, but I'm sure you actually use her to search Ritual of LaD.

The truth is though that all of these cards were designed by Kazuki for Yugi's use, and so were implicitly archetypal even though there was no synergy between them.

The more interesting line of inquiry is to ask what Kazuki's choices are supposed to reveal about Yugi's character. All of the sorcerors are obvious. But then you have Summoned Skull, a fiend, that's as powerful as the boss. Curse of Dragon, which looks cursed. All the knights from Celtic Guardian to Gaia to Giant Soldier Of Stone to Black Luster Soldier to Valkyrion. And Exodia, the most powerful monster in the game. I think there's a lot of symbolism and thematics I've never seen explored. If something like picrel is anything to go by, then answers must also be rooted in Season 0 era Yugioh.

Demons and demonic critters are common in D&D and dragon quest, and Kaz liked Devilman and Hellboy which is partially why DARK or Fiends aren't always evil in yugioh.

When Master Duel came out, I played it with a couple childhood friends and we loved it, we tried to convert a friend, who didn't know anything about Yugioh, HE HATED it. He said "You need a PHD for this game". I think Hearthstone was more appealing to him.

Xyzs with Numbers at or below 100 will obviously have their matching serialized card be the chase, like Serial 039 for Utopia.
Repeating digits like 11 or 22 should be worth a bit more than random numbers, and stuff like 77 and 88 might be a little more too since they're lucky numbers, and 44 might be a little cheaper since its an unlucky number.

Watching a few players who were new to Yugioh try to play is like watching them smash into a brick wall. I don't really think there's an easy way into Yugioh. I'm just speaking as someone who watched the anime as a kid, barely touched the card game when it first came out.

Then I got back into it slowly through Link Evolution and Duel Links several years ago. Now I know how the game works, but I can't build decks for shit as there are so many cards, there might be some non-archetype card that could be helpful in my deck but I wouldn't know about it. But I can always look up cards with keywords that may be related to my deck in edo or yugipedia, but I'm also someone with plenty of free time.

Same here! Except that I played casually with friends back then. I loved the Yugioh and Yugioh GX. And I still can't build decks, sometimes I miss the old times, where friends and friends from school built their own decks.

I get being annoyed by the look of like 70+ percent of modern anime (too shiny, over complicating bad color palettes with post processing effects) and how fantasy-themed anime or fantasy tropes now get depicted in them. And inevitably videogame and anime/manga media pour their influence into japanese card games.

But a lot of the problem is that those influences are floating around during the time that western media soft power is a pale shadow and has little power to assert itself to add to the mixture, because of its own rot. Both higher status and cheap pulp fantasy novels of the west and all the energy that was in them used to be the starting influence of a lot of it a long time ago. And now western media can't even squeeze out a dookie more than once in a blue moon, because of a combination of factors but also partly its own bad rotting on the american west coast that started a long time ago.
