Shadowlands' problem was it was all style, zero substance. It had loads of cool stuff, interesting places to see, etc, but it shit on the lore in every single way possible because in the afterlife you get to see what happened to all of the villains and heroes that had fallen in the past 20 years of the franchise.

Imagine having a dozen iconic characters that people still quote today, characters that still exist in games like League and DotA because those games were made with your old game engine, with your old heroes and mechanics.
Now imagine having complete, finish story arcs for these heroes and villains. They've been dead and gone for years.
Now imagine the most mediocre writers your game has ever had decide they're up to the task of picking up those completed narrative arcs and adding on to them.

It was a trainwreck. And not even the living heroes were safe.
The Gary Stu that ruled over the human faction got possessed by Satan.
Most of the heroes got tortured for months in literal Hell by said Satan.
One of the best characters in the game, who had a widely hated turn to villain in the previous expansion, got half-assedly "redeemed" in a way that dismantled their character's core competencies and aptitudes, then sentenced to spend a few centuries retrieving people from Hell despite her actions being key to revealing that everyone was going to Hell when they died.

But the afterlife zones were pretty neat.
There was an Elysian Fields run by winged angels, a Fey Wild full of mystical creatures, a Transylvania ruled by vampires, and a blighted battlefield full of dead warriors that spend eternity fighting for the love of the game.

You know that it's more expensive to stop making GW2 expansions in the SotO/JW/VoE format than it is to keep making them, right?
They're developing these with a small fraction of the studio and making similar-or-better revenue than they made in the PoF-LW4 era when the game was funding the entire studio. They need to hyper focus on specific limited amount of gameplay styles. The time of "MMOs are 9 games in one" are gone. Clearly impossible to marry all the aspects and still have a good quality, sustainable product. Modern coop games are essentially what mmos evolved into. Like Vermintide, Fortnight, Warframe, Forza Horizon.
Going back to GW1 roots would be a viable strategy for them - instanced content, can be played single or coop, limited amount 'open world' zones. Maybe a very basic arcady pvp mode, so people won't throw a hissy fit. More variety than this and the game will be spread super thin again.

That's why I've emphasized "Heavy". I've spent way more time flying around cliffs, mirror farming and doing daily jumping puzzles, than using skimmer underwater. Half of my characters in Castora still have shit water equipment, because I never needed anything better. It's fucking sad and a biggest missed opportunity for the heaviest Water-themed expansion yet.

Need a hand GW2G - After a while of playing Scourge and babysitting Sand Shades with miserable 8 seconds of duration each i've come to the conclusion that this isn't worth it. I've heard whispers of times where they were 20 seconds and i can only imagine what profound retardation led to this change. I'd prefer to stay Necro but actually have some fun playing. Can be Condition based or Power based. Power is the favorite child of ANet so i'd imagine most suggestions will lean towards that end, but that's fine.

Condi harbinger is the most fun I had with necro. It seems complex at first glance, with all the health loss and self condi infliction, but in reality it's gorilla button mash and surprisingly agile for a necro. You throw bottles everywhere and dash around in shroud.

Not really, unless you thought the story was going to be completely resolved in Part 3 of 4 for some reason, or you're just primed to hate the game, hate the story, and hate ArenaNet, which it sounds like you probably are.

There's pretty much three plot threads in this patch's story, and they all see movement:
- Trying, and ultimately failing, to stop Vloxx from using the magic stick to Ascend, which includes some basic chase story stuff, your own character going through two of the three stages of the ascension test, and changes Vloxx's motivation/character.
- The rift between Vloxx and the rest of the Inquest grows, and by the end they're completely detached from him and under Kuda's leadership. There's also a bunch of seer magic/technology that they manage to reverse-engineer.
- It becomes apparent at the start of the patch that the curse on Isgarren isn't just a handwave to keep him from helping you but actually pretty important, and there's a whole arc of finding the records of the guy who did it, getting his side of the story, and then breaking the curse.

It's not masterful storytelling or anything, the minigames in the story instances aren't great, and it doesn't have nearly the production value of something like LW4, but by the metric of how much stuff happens in the story, it's comparable to most updates in the LW days.

so the only real motivator to do the story and chore lists is to collect all the new relics they come up with, and to avoid pvp/wvw to unlock the relics? i get it, the mastery side and to complete collections, but at what cost? skip the story and just pvp if you don't want to do the story itself. if a player is unwilling to do chores or finish story ((because pvp sucks!)), deal with the consequences. most players are out of steam trying to give others the option or advice to just do a different game mode or don't play this game at all. don't come here to bitch and moan, just do the thing you need to do: which is likely quit. just don't give anet another dime. it's tiresome to hear the same shit over and over about story "sucking." everyone knows it sucks, just do something (you) WANT to do with (your) time! shit!

You don't get defense in shroud anymore and go full offence. Gain stacks of blight, that reduce max HP, get HP regen and increase condi dmg massively. You gain shroud very fast, big mobility skills, apply a lot of buffs in aoe, transfer condi from yourself.
Reduce max HP is counteracted by self regen, but you become unusually squishy and start to get one-shotted. Especially if you used to face tanking everything like most necros do.
