I think part of it is a weird activation of in-group tribal defense instinct. They see some slop headline and think "Foreigners are stealing the fruits of Japanese labor!"

I also don't think the people affected by these outrage waves (They're probably the Japanese equivalent of normies) have ever wandered outside of mainstream media and that doesn't require any effort to obtain. It's basically spoon-fed to you. Most of the stuff the Japanese got for free on broadcast TV was not available outside Japan officially before Crunchyroll started doing it's thing, so "pirating" was the only way for a foreign fan to see it. (And I read on /a/ that crunchyroll actually got it's start by just stealing other peoples fan-translations, and then later "went legal" so the other fan-translator groups felt they sold out, benefited from their work, or at least left them out of a lucrative business)

Whereas, here on this site, I think a lot of users have at least dabbled in torrenting or emulators. And for a lot of old games, that's the only realistic way to play them reliably. You can buy old CDs but they aren't from reliable sources and are often illegally copied anyway. (I once bought a rainbow 6 CD, on amazon, and only noticed it was an unofficial copy because there were files on it that were titles of some kind of Christian religious worship songs. I think whoever copied it didn't know what)

Ross Scott's Game Dungeon has some good examples of obstacles to playing old games, and how IP laws are often outdated, wacky, and hard to understand, or vaguely written.
