Nta and I enjoyed your post and agreed with a good portion of it. But I wanna point out that academic success isn't necessarily an intelligence thing. It's true women are beating the ass off of us in terms of average grades and participation and graduation numbers.

But that's not down to intelligence. What it's down to us conformity, and the school system is a place where you go to be told what to do, told how to behave, and told where to focus your efforts or your mind. And women are very good at being passive and feel at home with being told what to do, so they excel at school more than boys.

Boys are less likely to confirm, more likely to compete or rebel, they don't want to be told what to do, they want to be the one to do something, not learn about the systems or abstractions or discoveries or actions someone else made with their life. Men want to be the one who makes life, not follow it. And this is why the school system doesn't mesh well with males, because the school system is feminized. I don't meant that in a bad demeaning way but it is true. The school systems are majority female teachers and faculty. And historically, modern schools were always used as a daycare. A place to send kids to so parents can still have individual lives and breathing room. That's why we send kids to school around the 8-9am to 3-4pm mark, it's so parents can go work without worrying about their kids. It's an entirely female driven system, a matriarchal endeavor.

But I still think you can not be flat-out "braindead" and complete a complex university education based just on your work ethic and the attention you pay in class, you definitely need a baseline level for that.

You also bring up the harder question what intelligence is in the first place. I would personally agree that it is very narrow to define this first and foremost as cognitive abilities, information processing. But it is hard enough to say anything meaningful about that aspect without adding more elements to it, too.

For the record, I work in the literary field and it is the same there. For a long time female writers were looked down upon as only writing about trivial subjects or not writing real literature, just travel books for ladies. Now there is a huge amount of active female authors getting lots of literary cred, winning literary prizes (including the Nobel prize) but within the literary world this is also twisted into women "being able to give the audience what it wants" so still writing books less original, daring etc than men do.

I personally don't consider intelligence to be hard to define myself, to me it's about pattern recognition & intuitive problem solving, that's all. Being quick to recognize what's happening, and being quick to either stop/change/expand on what's happening. Whether that's for natural phenomenon, technologies, social currents, or whatever you like. That's when intelligence is shown, right on the frontier or cutting edge of human endeavour, at the front lines of it.
